I would have thought he was fluent.

He spent two or three years playing for Chelsea when they were shit.
According to Wiki he just spent a year there before joining Valencia

Whatever or whoever happens to Liverpool FC, they can certasinly tell Roy that he is killing them softly. We are going down the drains with him... People around me stopped interesting months ago.. And I am following. With Roy Hodgson in charge I dont fucking care. its not my Liverpool. Its not the club I loved anymore.

Great news if true, realistically he is the best candidate out there. It would be worth waiting til the summer to get a top calibre manager like deschamps in, if he was really pissed off at marseille and we could bag him in jan then even better. But this would be a colossal step forward for the club.

He seemed to play open attacking football when at Monaco with reasonable level of success so hes not a defense first manager and hes not a ridiculous Keegan style chilled out entertainer either

I think this is right but you don't mention the penchant for doing the entirely unexpected.

Remember the first leg of the semi final against Chelsea. I think the score was 1-1 when Monaco had a player sent off. He waited about 10 minutes, let Chelsea change to a more attacking team with - I think - two subs. Then Deschamps replaced a defensive midfielder with a striker and they went on to win the first leg 3-1 which basically saw them win the tie.

Of course if it had backfired then he'd have looked a fool but I like that he has the capacity to do the unexpected and looks to win games rather than wait for the opposition to lose them.

We should offer Marseille 4m to take Deschamps now.

It'd be the best transfer of the window.

Yes it is. It's in a bind at the moment, but it's still LFC. Remember the words of YNWA and man up.

I couldn't give a fuck as long as they win Spidey
I want to see attacking football I've had about all I can stand of defensive, cowardly football. I also think playing attacking football will make it more likely we'll win stuff.
Newcastle under Keegan, Liverpool under Evans and a shitload of other teams were more attacking than Rafa's Liverpool and they won next to fuck all.

I actually think we're less defensive under Roy, we're just shite though. You seem to think that having attacking fullbacks and being this Football Manager-esque fantasy side is piss easy and the route to guaranteed success.

So the shortlist for Roy's successor :-

Didier Deschamps
Owen Coyle
Roberto di Matteo
Martin O'Neil
Frank Rikjaard

Who else?

And I'm talking serious options (no Fat Ssms or Mounihos)- so either decent managers not currently working or likely to jump at the chance of taking on the Liverpool job who's name isn't Rafael Benitez.

For me, Deschamps is the obvious standout, but Coyle & Di Matteo are young, hungry & seemingly progressive managers. I think Coyle is a dark horse for the job

What about Martinez, should he be in there?

O'Neil is in by default - he's won the odd trophy and while I'm not a fan of his football I quite like him. Can't see Rikjaard being a success in England

High line in defence.
Attacking fullbacks
Attacking football.

And you win the league. Sounds easy. I'm in the wrong business.

of course it isn't that easy, there are lots of factors for imposing yourself on the opposition and dominating as much of the game as possible to give you the best possible chance for taking all 3 points.

let's not make out I want attacking football over all else because unless it escaped anyone's attention I was and am a big fan of rafa benitez, I liked his tactics and admired how he analysed the opposition and set about cancelling them out but despite that rafa wasn't able to win the league and you can only wonder would he have won the league if he were a little less cautious? I was also a big fan of gh and the way he turned a shambolic defense into one of the meaniest defenses in the country.

That made me chuckle. I had visions of Robbie Rotten playing centre half.

so yes, it's easy to say 'I couldn't give a fuck what we play as long as we win'

but when you break that down further, exactly what type of football is going to GIVE us the best chance of winning?

I didn't realise they were still making it in 2010 Spidey.

I'm with you on this one Spidey.

No team has won the title in recent years playing defensive, reactive football. Ergo, it makes sense to want a manager who will look to employ an attacking, proactive philosophy.

The beloved mourinho was hardly attacking though was he?

That's a genuine question, I can't remember properly.
the impression I got was his team away from home were solid and were able to soak up pressure and were lethel on the counter attack with world class wingers. at home his teams put pressure on the oppostion with drogba winning the first ball high up the pitch and then the likes of lampard hurting teams with the second ball.

I don't know if it could be called 'attacking' but they scored loads of goals and conceeded precious few, but it's worth noting they had the quality of players to execute this type of crushing football.

They didn't necessarily play *exciting* football, but it was attacking (these 2 notions seem to be often lumped together). Their brand of football was direct and effective.

i'd be perfectly satisfied with deschamps as our new manager; surely i can't be the only one who's becoming increasinlgy exasperated with hodgson's lugubriousness?

I hope mr_moo sticks around longer than five months! (And that wasn't nice to say about him anyway.)

Anything else seems very optimistic to me.

there's no point in getting rid of him sooner to be honest.
