DIDIER DESCHAMPS is top of Liverpool's list to replace Roy Hodgson.

The beleaguered Kop boss looks certain to cling on until the summer, when owner John W Henry will begin the search for a new manager.

And World Cup winner Deschamps will be the first in the queue when the selection process begins.

Deschamps was interviewed after the sacking of Rafa Benitez in the summer and club officials were impressed with the Frenchman.

There was little to choose between him and Hodgson but the club opted for a man with knowledge of the Premier League rather than one who had never managed in England.

Deschamps had a list of conditions, including alterations to the backroom staff, which were unaffordable at the time.

It was also felt exposing him to the dysfunctional regime of George Gillett and Tom Hicks was too much of a risk.

But from the moment New England Sports Ventures took over, the criteria to be Liverpool boss changed. The club no longer needs someone to "steady the ship! but to steer it back to the heights to which it is accustomed.

The expectation now is for Liverpool to be competing for the title and Champions League at some point in the next five years and NESV will be looking for a younger boss with recent experience of some achievements.

Deschamps, 42, led Marseille to their first league title in 18 years last season after impressing at Juventus.

Deschamps could be an exciting appointment, but from what he said last summer he's very happy at Marseilles and, even if he were interested in considering the move, Marseilles would want top dollar for him. It would very much depend on how much NESV were prepared to pay to get him.

Dunno about Deschamps after he apparently turned us down if the media reports are to be believed.

He turned us down last summer saying the time wasn't right to join us and who could blame him given Hicks and Gillett were still here. Out of all the realistic targets out there he'd be my number one choice. Winner of the French league with two separate teams and brought Juventus back up from Serie A to Serie B. Apart from Mourinho or Ancelloti, who else out there has the credentials. A young manager who has a track record of success. Yes please.

I don't think he won it with Monaco.
He got them to the UCL final.

Yep. I've completely lost interest in the whole "we need an attacking manager" argument. We can't defend for toffee at the minute anyway.

Completely agree Sheik. Excellent manager.

I want to see attacking football I've had about all I can stand of defensive, cowardly football. I also think playing attacking football will make it more likely we'll win stuff.

You sound like a Tottenham fan under Ardiles. Hey, we lost but we scored 3 goals. I want to see silverware, I've had all I can stand of winning fuck all. We exist to win trophies first, entertain second.

When we have occasionally played good attacking football this season all you've done is moan anyway Spidey

Deschamps would be my first choice too, so I'm delighted to see any link connecting him.

Out of curiosity, dug out an article that was 3 month's old. Looks like a good offer will entice him to leave his current one which is far from ideal.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/8024967/Didier-Deschamps-weighed-down-by-explosive-politics-of-being-Marseille-manager.html

One French football executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "Didier knew that he was walking into a club with these kind of issues. What he did not know was quite how complicated it would be. I think it has exhausted him to be honest."

Despite winning the league, and the league cup, he has been fighting with sporting director, Jose Anigo, over transfer policy. Deschamps wanted an established big name – hence the club's ambitious effort to re-sign Didier Drogba and Luis Fabiano – while Anigo wanted to invest in French youth.

Club president Jean-Claude Dassier, a former TV executive, has admitted there had been tension between them and Anigo euphemised August as "complicated month". A clear-the-air meeting seems to have brought a truce, and the club did bring in strikers Loic Remy, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta for a combined 38 million euros.

Deschamps is intense. But his disputes are born of principle rather than fiery temperament. And as a coach he is obsessive.

He is often compared to Laurent Blanc, now the France manager, and it is true that the pair share an instinct towards leadership yoked to a humility and generosity unusual in players of such distinction.

Yet while Blanc goes and plays golf in the afternoon, Deschamps is up till 3am watching DVDs of players.

An early Champions League exit would bite particularly hard for La Desch because it is accepted in French football circles that this is his last season at the club.

The death of owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus
(bizarrely, the cousin of the actress who plays Elaine in Seinfeld) last summer has left the club's future uncertain and the various expectations and pressures are taking their toll.

Liverpool tried to get him this summer just gone while he was also supposedly on the shortlist for the Chelsea job when Luiz Felipe Scolari replaced Avram Grant two years ago. Any vacancy high profile vacancy next summer, in England, Spain or Italy, could provide welcome asylum from the Marseille madhouse.

:🙂

that's not true, I always acknowledge good football like the spurs away game for instance.

gh and rafa had their place and I didn't really have a problem with how they set up their teams (especially as it won trophies) but I want see someone with an attacking mentality because I think that is what it will take to win the league. I'm not asking for attacking football purely from an entertainment stand point.

Piss off and support Barca then.

I would but travelling to games would be a bit of a pain...

Would mean similar problems with Commoli then?

Liverpool don't need stars or big name players though.

We've got 3 world class players as it is.

It's the rest of the squad that's the problem.

Obviously what you need is balance between youth and star signings.

His English is pretty good, right?

Does this mean no Frank?

I would have thought he was fluent.

He spent two or three years playing for Chelsea when they were shit.

I can't remember whether it was here or elsewhere that I read that he'd already agreed to come in the summer.

I have resigned myself to Roy being here until the summer. It's about getting the right man in then.
