Reds chief sits out Blues clash

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has confirmed he will not be at Anfield on Sunday, because of his loyalties to Chelsea.

Broughton, a life-long Chelsea fan, was appointed Liverpool chairman last month by the club's owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

The British Airways boss has been brought in to oversee the sale of the club and he admits he cannot simply forget about his Chelsea passion.

"Any true fan who has supported a club for 55 years - like I have - can't be expected to suddenly move against them overnight," he said.

"When you have followed a team for as long as I have then it's in the blood. It's a very emotional thing and all fans who have supported Liverpool for a long time will know what I mean.

"I can't come to the match on Sunday and show any of that emotion because that would be very disrespectful to the Liverpool faithful. Liverpool have terrific fans and I wouldn't want to do that, so the only sensible thing is for me to stay at home and watch it on the television.

"I suppose the perfect scenario would be for Liverpool to win this weekend and go on to secure Champions League qualification and then for Chelsea to go on and win the title. That would be great if it were to happen."

Had that been the case I suspect he'd have found the conflict of interest too acute to take the job. 😉

But since you ask, the answer is yes.

Personally, I think it was a bit of divvy move to appoint a life-long Chav as the Chairman of Liverpool.

I know it's *supposed to be* strictly professional, but if I was appointed at the helm of the Scum - I'd always be looking to do them over somehow.

P.s

Liverpool are out of the running for 4th spot

and the Chavs DESPERATELY need to win this game to ensure the Title

No such thing as split loyalties in Football.

Fair enough from Broughton- he's absolutely right. He shouldn't be expected to cheer uproariously if the team he's supported his whole life effectively lose the championship against us.

It would be particularly ironic given that half the Liverpool supporters might not even be doing that.

Touche.

I really respect the openness of his stance.

I think part of our problem has always been trying to get in people who were 'Liverpool through and through' instead of people who were really competent at what they do.

Yeah, I think is true in some respects, however I'd like to think position of chairman would always be a fan, though I do understand that looking at LFC as a business, hard as it is to do, you must simpl bring in the best man available, regardless of club affiliation.

Given a choice between Broughton, a football fan for over 50 years, or a stooge for any owners who has no football history or idea of traditions it's a no brainer though, Broughton will understand the fans perspective a thousand times better.

Regards this stance, it's spot on, & he's increased in my estimation for it, were he to have sat & cheered us on I'd have zero respect for him.

When the club was competently led the right people were recruited, so these two categories overlapped more often than not. Our overall decline since the John Smith era has very deep roots.
