I loved Riera. I thought he was great.

In his one full season we almost won the league. Sadly people like Brendan savaged him because he wasnt blindingly quick.
He probably gave the ball away about thrice all season.

Correct

They did, but he also got the assist late on, so he still had it in him to get free of a marker and make an intelligent run that mattered.

Rurik/Dee - I'm not sure whether that's a joke, but anyone who saw the game would tell you he was more than a 'safe' merchant and looked to have alot more in his locker than Riera, he constantly looked to go at people, take them on AND get beyond the fullback with pace. He consistently put dangerous balls in too.

It was refreshing last night watching the deliveries from him and Sahin (from setpieces).

Not a joke. I liked Riera. He gave us balance that, for at least one season, made us look like real contenders. I'd take a mk2 of that Riera any day of the week.

His first touch was immaculate

I had no problems with Albert, even after the rumours of him sparking Pacheco, these things happen.
As for Assaidi he looked very good. As I Saud in the Young Boys game if you looked at him and Sowing and Saud one was a 20m player and the other was a 3m player, you would be forgiven for getting it wrong
The 5 Live commentator said words to the affect of remember his name you will be hearing a lot more if it.
Suddenly we have gone from a threadbare squad to one with options.

regards

Isn't that the truth Vlad.

That's been our problem in the transfer market - paying premium prices for substandard players as opposed to paying decent prices for "unfashionable" good players.

We've been spectacularly bad at getting bang for our buck for quite a while

last year was a doozy especially.... a-fucking-trociuos

Stewart downing.... Dear God....

We wouldn't have gone anywhere near Assaidi a few years ago, probably put off the small transfer fee. However, he's exactly the type of player we would have gone to buy from the likes of Swansea - and paid over the odds for - for having a barn-stormer against us.

i can't believe we may finally have a genuine tricky winger...!

It's been what 15 years since we had one? Riera was enjoyable, but we were starved for quality and relieved we had a left footed player that could beat a man, occasionally and cross the ball occasionally. He wasn't another Antonio Núñez, Smicer, Cheyrou disappointment.

I played as a winger for years at low grassroots level (don't laugh) , and nothing excites me more than a player who can beat his man, and go for goal or hit the byline and cross the ball in. It's a skill we *rarely* see anymore.

I liked Albert too. Remember when he destroyed Villa at Anfield? Poor Nigel Reo Joker was playing RB for them that day.

Reira can't be compared to Assaidi though. Totally different players. Assaidi has pace, hugs the touchline, can attack on either foot and beats players down the line for fun.
Reira on the other hand gave us balance, guile, ball retention and intelligence. He was strong too.

It appears Assaidi can provide that too but looks to have blistering pace and ability to beat player also in his locker.

Riera was good at getting the ball and keeping it. He wasn't so good at doing something with it.

Give me a player like Assman any day.

Did you go drinking in the middle of that sentence Vladders.

I think Assaidi is a different kind of player to Riera. These kids coming through now could set us up for the next ten years or so and by adding players like Assaidi to the ones coming through the academy it's not going to cost FSG big bucks which is what they're looking for. We have to unearth gems like this one coz the occasional marquee player they've promised is all bullshit in my opinion.

I read Vlad sentence and initially thought he had gone bonkers, then I thought it was a play on words. Then I clicked x and went back to work.

Assaidi will be judged in a few months. If you'll indulge me by letting me be a dick for a minute.

He played well in the something cup against WBA. That is all.

Agreed. The other plus to add to the 20M Vs 3M debate is that these options we've now got - Assaidi, Suso, Yesil, Sterling, etc - all have 10-15 years of football ahead of them as opposed to 3-5.

That's enormous.

I mentioned to a friend today that if Sinclair turns out to be top notch and has a long career we could be watching him on tv in 2032.

Fuck.
