It was just naive defending, and as I've said before - something quality centre backs don't do.
What does that mean? That Agger is not a quality centre back? Or he isn't *yet*?

I suppose that's the point I take issue with. It's sensationalising a mistake that you see all the time - Carra has been guilty of it on numerous occasions as have many top centre-backs. Towards the end of the game when we were desperate to get some momentum going, Carra was caught dawdling on the ball, which could've quite easily ended very badly.

What's worse? Getting caught in possession when the rest of the team is ahead of play or risking a challenge when there is plenty of cover behind you?

I wouldn't like to say, but I wouldn't like to tag either mistake with "something quality centre backs don't do".

I think you're reading a bit too much into that. I rate Agger, but as I stated above "he's got a lot of learning still do do".

It was naive defending, something he's often guilty of, probably cos he's still young and hasn't been playing much recently, but it cost us.

He'll become a very good centre back I've no doubt, but we can expect errors like that to happen for a while yet.

Thought Lucas played fairly well, Johnson was piss awful and Kuyt was MOTM.
WTF Mark? He scored the goal but was poor poor poor apart from that. contributed fuck all. again

Kuyt was alright in the second half and bagged a goal.

Which is better than his form in recent weeks. There was worse out there but he wasn't MOTM - that belongs to Javier.

But still, massively unfortunate for it to be bundled in off Johnson, so you could say the whole thing was a fuck-up really.

You're picking on the slightest of errors here. If there's any error at all to pick on.

Agger pushed up trying to close down and in most cases it was the right thing to do as Carra and Johnson still outnumbered their remaining one striker.

Carra or Johnson should've just cleared that rather tame cross really. Johnson's own goal is one thing, that can happen to anyone, the main issue for me was the way he seemed completely shocked that the ball suddenly found his feet. He looked well asleep to me and was 100 pct to blame for that goal sadly.

Agger was the most assured defender on the pitch last night as Keni has already said.

Although I agree that it's always extremely unfortunate to concede an owngoal Johnson's effort last night was one of the worst I've seen of late.

Every defender knows that when a cross comes in they need to be on their feet as it could actually end up in their path.

When you look at the goal again you can almost see the sheer confusement in Johnson's face; Where the feck did that ball come from?

It's a schoolboy error and he knew it instantly. The way he completely lost his grip afterwards, letting Arshavin go unchallenged for their second goal, underlined his complete demise defensively.

I reckon Johnson has been one of our best players all Season - with a margin even - but last night was one to forget sooner rather than later.

But why do you even care, haven't you lost interest in football?

I'd take an injured Agger over Skrtel any day of the week.

Team selection was poor
Substitutions were atrocious
He's clueless

Reina 6
Carra 6
Agger 6
Johnson 2
Aurelio 5
Lucas 4
Mascher 6
Kuyt 6
Benayoun 5
Gerrard 6
Torres 5

Aquilani for Mascher ?!? Our shite brazilian remains on the pitch!
Degen for Johnson WTF?!? we were 2-1 down, did he really expect my swiss fellow would get the equalizer?
Typical like for like substitutions that bring nothing.

You give Johnson a 2 and at the same time you criticize Rafa for subbing him?

Brilliant and constructive.

In the first place, you're not playing our most creative player of the season on the left. Thats his worst position, he's always been poor there. He was again yesterday. Lucas is just a hapless passenger. I cant blame him if hes playing week in week out.

You dont bring a Right back on when you're 2-1 down. Thats very simple.
You're not taking your best CM off. Thats very simple.
Its not simple for our stubborn manager.
Well Im not sure its stubborness anymore. Clueless is the right word.

As he had a bench full of defenders it was difficult for him to do anything else.
To play him on the left does waste Yossi, it is his worst position and never looks happy there.
The Mascher thing I have given him the benefit of the doubt on as he had taken a couple of knocks

regards

But Yossi is such shit and doesn't show up in any big games blah blah. Yossi doesn't score big goals anyways, and doesn't run much, so he belongs on the left as it's the quickest way to get him to the bench! 🙂

I agree about the bench.
Where was Pacheco for instance?

Yeah for a home game against Arsenal that we really needed to win, Aquilani and N'Gog were our only attacking options on the bench. That left 5 defenders. Already on the pitch we have 3 defensive midfielders. Im including Dirk in that. Anyone seeing a pattern here?

Dirk is a defensive midfielder now?

Wow. He's scored 5 Premiership goals this season. And scored 12 last season.

That's pretty good for a defensive midfielder

Pretty good for a defensive midfielder.
Not good enough for a striker/attacking midfielder that plays 90 minutes week in week out.

drop Johnson.. and play degen.. for wigan...

seriously... Johnson was piss awful against Arsenal...

re kuyt talk

Plus his goals don't come about from midfield, its when he moves forward and almost forgets about his position (whether is be set piece or chasing a game) Has he ever scored a goal for us from outside of the 18-yard box? It is a shameful watching him on the right. And when Johnson was actually forced to defend yesterday we lost all attacking prowess on the wings as Yossi is already shambolic on the left.

Yet again, you display all the evidence of someone who has not only no idea whatsoever about football, but has also never even watched a game being played

Really because he hasn't dont this in at least 5 games this year when we are trailing or tieing near the end. He leaves our rigth side completely exposed. A pacey footballer (preferably with skill) would be able to help and support the attack and also cover his necessary position.

And Dirk has a loss on his record this year when he acrobatically (foolish) kept the ball in play in our own half so that the other team (I believe it was Lyon but not sure) could go on and score.

and again as I probably have a significat more playing experience than you I suggest you shut your increasingly intolerable trap

Yeah I've seen this trend appear the last week or so on here.. If you're out of form you're a defensive player.

Despair, and then some..

He's another coming back from injury. That said, I do think he's a pretty poor defender and has indirectly and directly been culpable for alot of out defensive woes this season. He needs games though to get fit.
