A good win, though I think we weren't as good as the scoreline indicates.

Reina - 8 - MOTM - He's just a fantastic keeper.

Carra - 7 - solid performance, it's going to be a difficult choice for Rafa when Magic comes back ... Will Carra stay at RB or shift to CB?

Skrtel - 6.5 - Wasn't at his best today

Agger - 6.5 - see Skrtel

Insua - 6.5 - Not a bad effort.

Lucas - 6.5 - He seemed to have a few nice touches on the ball - but I just wish he'd try and be a bit more 'imposing' against the weaker teams

Masch - 8 - best outfield player for us. Great goal and was yet again everywhere on the pitch. We cannot afford to lose him this summer.

Babel - 7 - his best start in a long time. Well done. I hope he continues in this form - some great touches and well taken goal.

Benayoun - 6.5 - Solid performance from Yossi. Nice (Lucky?) assist and had some nice runs. He's still rusty obviously

Gerrard - 7.5 - a lot of good shots today, and his 33rd goal in Europe. We need him to be on the top of his game if we're to win this tourney & get 4th place

Ngog - 3.5 - his worst game for Liverpool.

Subs:

Kelly - 7 - solid performance from Kelly. Did nothing wrong.

The Greek - n/a

Aurelio - n/a

Mascher and Pepe were ace, Wash was rubbish, everyone else was inbetween.

If Rafa doesn't bring Magic back into the side (and there are, as you say, reasons why he might not), that £40m he spent last summer would start looking pretty fucking disastrous.

As far as this season goes, it's already looking disastrous.

One just has to hope that next season, we'll see the rewards of the long-term view we're having to take now.

according to a mate of mine, we actually laid out a fairly insignificant sum for aquilani up front (maybe as low as £5m) with lots of add-ons dependent on appearances taking the fee to the £20m. apparently this was directly because of his injury record...

anyone know if there's any truth to this? because if so, we should just cut our losses (if any) in the summer and get someone more suited to the PL in. you could certainly understand the gamble we took if that is true.

That's how most transfers are paid, hardly anyone pays anywhere near the agreed fee up front

Whatever, Aquilani's a fucking disaster and rather lays waste to that age-old RCDNW mantra that when given the cash, he rarely makes mistakes with the 'larger' transfers

What he's done to the team this season has been shameful

As far as I can remember, it's been pretty well documented that we paid 5M up front.

i think the bulk of most fees are made up of instalments rather than contingent fees though aren't they?

this would be different as it's essentially only a, say, £5m fee until the guy proves himself, which he clearly hasn't.

a bad signing then, yep, but hopefully not a disastrous one - and although i don't particularly want to defend rafa's signings, you shouldn't include aquilani as a big money signing IF we don't actually end up paying big money.

I downloaded the official document detailing the transfer from Roma's website and used google translator to decipher it. (Sad I know)

Anyway the deal could end up costing us about £26m if we win a load of stuff. The absolute minimum we'll pay for him is about £18.5m though (in instalments). We pay about 300k every time we qualify for the CL, there's appearances clauses (i think it's 250k for 35 games, 70 games, 105 games) and trophy clauses too (1m for a league or CL win). And 5% of any future fee goes to Roma.

fucking hell, i had no idea how much of a nutter you are...

so that £18.5m isn't contingent on anything then?

terrible if true. you'd think he'd still have a reasonable market among the italian clubs though...prays.

Ross, you're a bit of an anorak but I'm very glad you're here to do the research I am both too unmotivated and not knowledgeable enough to do myself. You do your country and your profession proud.

Horrible pitch, rubbish team, good result. Not overly arsed.

Reina (8.) Some very good saves kept us in the game at times.

Carra (7). Another solid stint at RB from Mr Reliable.
Skittles (5). Not as good as he has been recently, allowed too many shots to go at Reina. Carried off.
Agger (5). Having a little dip in the last few games, needs to improve.
Insua (6). Better going forward than he is defending, but an extra point for the attacking part of his generally ordinary game.

Lucas (5). Seems to play better than normal against lower quality opposition.
Masher (8.) has a strike rate worse than 1 in 50, but tehy're alwasy fun to watch. Great display too
Casper (6). Very rusty, but some attacking intent, which is always nice to see. Will never be a player I like overly, but good to see him back.
Babel (7). Good display, great goal, deserves his place.
Gerrard (7). Top goalscorer in Europe. Well done Stevie.

Eggnog (0). Possibly the worst display by a Liverpool striker I've seen. Since his last worst display. Useless twat.

I don't get why you don't like Yossi, Brendan. He's the best dribbler in the team (bar maybe Torres), he's intelligent, quick, a good passer, takes risks, makes things happen, scores and creates goals. And he only cost £5m. I accept he's far from perfect - that tendency to hang on to the ball a few seconds too long; a lack of physical power - but given that you like(d) the far less consistent and effective Luis Garcia and Ryan Babel, I'm kind of mystified by your coolness towards Benayoun. Is it cos he's Jewish?

I'll field this one. It is because Brendan had categorised him as turd, and banged this drum long and loud. Since Bren is never wrong about a player, it would hardly do to say Yossi is good.

...hence Lucas got a "5" too.

Casper and Lucas aren't anywhere near good enough to start for a team that aspires to win the Premiership.

Casper is skilful, but maddeningly inconsistent, which is better than Lucas, who is a fucking mediocrity

Sorry, but that's the truth

You're either brilliant or a fucking useless cunt in his views. It's thrilling stuff to read though.

How do you make 26m quid?

Four cash installments:

* €5m upfront
* €3m by 4th January 2010
* €7m by June 30th 2010
* €5m by June 30th 2011.

Further Add ons include:

1.5m * €300k for every year Liverpool qualify for the CL from 2010/11 to 2014/15.

1.0m * €250k every time the player reaches 35 appearancs; 70 appearances; 105 appeances and then 140 appearances.

1.0m * €1m the first time Liverpool either wins the Premier League or Champions League by 30 June 2014.

1.0m * 5% of any future transfer fee paid to Roma.

Base transfer fee = €20m = 17-18m quid
Max transfer fee = €24.5m = 21-22m quid

if thats true then its a joke, a guaranteed £18 million fee for a player with a horrendous injury record, and even if we do sell him on (which is certain to be at a loss) Roma take 5% off the top. Jesus christ, bring back Rick Parry cos whoever negotiated that deal has paid nearly £20m that we dont have for an unproven fragile lemon
