Partially because Alonso was phenomenal (dunno if it was the Barry saga, or just him hitting his peak form ... credit to him for being professional) - and we shouldn't have let him go ... It was a terrible mistake.
But everything clicked that year - Reina was excellent, the defense was fantastic, the midfield trio of Xabi, Mascher and Gerrard were great, Riera was solid, Kuyt was phenomenal bar one two month stretch, Torres was en fuego and our role players produced. We had everything we needed to win the league. I'm still not quite sure how we didn't do it ...
We lost it because someone decided he was going to prove that he new best and only he was in charge.
As anyone who was watching us well knows, our form went up and down year on year. Have a look at the season after we won the CL and he had more input into the team. Didn't make it out of the group stages, relying on Peter Crouch as a striker and our form in the league was some of the most turgid rubbish we've ever seen. That team was not progress.
As for the comments that he made us better year on year?? Utter bollocks but impossible to argue with cause those who hold to it live in a fantasy world where the rules of logic and rational thinking don't apply. We didn't build gradually, steadily to 2009 at all. That season both the Chavs and mancs seemed intent on giving us the title. They were both all over the place in the first 6 months and we should have had it wrapped up.
Three factors occured that season which were down to good management, pure luck and a huge amount of stubborn pride.
Factor 1 Benitez tried to get rid of Alonso but failed to do so and was stuck with him. Alonso then turns in the best season of his career before walking with a nice "fuck you" to Rafa. I know there are divided opinions on whether it was good management by Rafa to give Alonso the kick up the butt he needed or if he got lucky by failing to sell him as intended. Either way, that's factor 1 cause Xabi was superb.
Factor 2 is Gerrard. Again, the question would be whether Gerrard was always going to perform or whether Rafa got the best out of him. The FA writers said he was the best player in the country, winning the award in May and Zidane said he was the best player in the world - better than either Ronaldo or Messi even though he doesn't get the same headlines. He scored 24 goals (16 in the league - same as Torres) and 23 assists. He was seemingly unplayable. Again, he'd had run ins with Rafa previously but you surely can't perform at that level if you're not happyw with what the manager is doing so Rafa needs to be remembered for one of the all time great seasons by a Liverpool player.
Factor 3 is Rafa himself. He took a team that was heading for the title at christmas and sitting squarely on top. Then he decided this was the time to attack Ferguson. I have no problem with him doing so - it was long overdue and was never an hysterical rant. The issue was the timing - why do it when you're top and have everything to lose? It attracts all the wrong attention and press but rather than say he wants it forgotten he carries it on. Our next performance against Stoke is rubbish and we draw without scoring. Then he distracts from the Ferguson issue by putting Keane up for sale. His last league game he scored a brace, Torres has been injured off and on all season but Rafa puts his only other striker up for sale. Keane gets subbed after an hour and we're held 1-1 by the bitters. Now Rafa comes out and says he never signed Keane - it's Parry who signed him and the old cliche of "wanted a lamp stand was given a chair". We draw 1-1 with Wigan as Rafa gives Keane 6 minutes in his final game. We drop 11 points in 7 games, Ngog is now our back up striker and we've gone from 1st to 3rd.
There were dozens of us called it at the time on here; the mancs were spluttering and struggling, trailing us convincingly. Ferguson was desperate to find a way to unsettle us but was coming up empty until Rafa suddenly decided to give everyone - including Ferguson - something to distract us with. Rather than try and put it behind him he continued it (as we're dropping points) and then sells our only other top line striker cause he claims "it wasn't his choice".
We're still recovering from that season; it knocked the confidence out of the players, we were dismal the next season, the one after and last season. I think we're only recovering now with a number of new players who don't have that legacy. Benitez himself is, IMO, still recovering from it.
A stupid decision compounded by stubborn pride - that's the reason we're still waiting for 19.
