Lot to be underwhelmed by there.

Id so much rather stay and play at home about 5 games against Uk teams.
There isnt one game there id be inspired by.

Yep even a couple of ears ago it was sexy when we played Atl Madrid,Valencia and the likes.
Now fucking Olympiacos I'd struggle to watch it if it was Champions League never mind a fucking friendly.

Yup. Thats Gerrards testimonial aswell. We are some low expectation havin motherfuckers these days.

Id like us to play (given Mr Rodgers philosophy)
Swansea
Barcelona
Ajax
Dortmund
Lyon
and/or
Porto.

Fucking Shanghai and fucking Preston....

Yep even a couple of ears ago .

I remember that, pardon.

Last few years we've always had a 'glamour' friendly at home as the last one before the big kick off.

Don't be a cunt - the Melbourne game is huge.

It may seem like a trivial thing, but it isn't.

Man Utd are playing in Sydney - Liverpool in Melbourne - lines will be drawn.

I'm surprised that we aren't having a game against Utd in Australia given both sides will be there around the same time and the clubs would make a fortune off it

It's against one of the teams which he'll be remembered for.

I don't get the grief

I could care less regarding specifically who we play during the offseason, as long as it's successful publicity

If we are rousing up interest in Asia and Australia instead of Europe, then so be it. We have a better shot at leaving our footprint farther abroad anyways.

Does anyone else not think Olympiakos are pretty poor opposition for Stevie's testimonial???

Yep. I suppose an all star world XI would have been too much hassle to organise, but he deserved that kind of tribute. Most of the Other side's players will not even know much about the 2005 games and will just be going through the motions in another pre-season friendly. These things are usually so lame you need some big names and a bit of flair to make them memorable.

I always think it's a shame we never participate in any of those pre-season mini tournaments.

You get some good games in those.

The Preston game is some kind of Shankly celebration. The Echo's resident wurzel, James Pearce, helpfully points out that both clubs have decided to mark his centenary 'in the same year'.
http://www.pnefc.net/index.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/news/article/lawro-likes-shankly-tribute-906494.aspx

Former PNE and Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson claims Saturday’s friendly between the sides is a fitting tribute to the great Bill Shankly.

The ex-defender started his illustrious career at Deepdale, playing over 70 games for the Lilywhites, before he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion and, shortly after, Anfield.

Having felt the effect of ‘Shanks’ during his time with the Reds, and following the Scots’ footsteps as a defensive minded Lilywhite, ‘Lawro’ believes the Shankly Shield is the perfect way to honour the former player and manager in the year of his 100th birthday.

“I think it’s great, I think anybody who’d ever come into contact with him will know what a great football man he was,” Mark told PNE.Com.

“He did an awful lot for Preston obviously but probably even more so for Liverpool and if you think about the Liverpool successes from the 60s when he was there through to present day, a lot was built on the foundation he set at the Club.

“He had a particular vision for the Club where he wanted it to be, he was very much at the right club at the right time and he was, most definitely, the right man so it’s a very fitting tribute.”

Brendan Rodgers will bring a star-studded squad up the M6 on Saturday and while the ‘Lawro’ admits the fixture might hold more meaning to North End, due to Liverpool’s Premier League status, he is certain both sides will use the game as a fitness test.

It is a big one for Preston because they’re playing against a team that plays two grades of football higher up but from Liverpool’s point of view, and even Preston’s, is that the most important thing is that everyone’s fit and ready,” he said.

However, the BBC pundit did concede the game will have a different feel about it and may well have a more competitive edge, thanks to the relationship between the Clubs.

I do think it will be much more than a normal friendly because of the connections, which there have always been – not just regards Shankly,” he continued.

A crowd in excess of 17,000 is expected at Deepdale for the visit of the Reds – a massive attendance for a pre-season friendly – and Mark believes the high demand reflects well on both sets of fans.

“I have to say that if they can do 16,000 people for a friendly, three weeks before the season starts, I think that’s great,” he said.

“I think it tells you a lot of things about football, the relationship between the two clubs and Liverpool are still a massive draw.”

And the 56-year-old is confident that relationship will continue beyond Saturday’s fixture, a game he predicts will finish all square: “I think Liverpool will virtually play two teams so let’s go two-two.”

On a personal level, Lawrenson was modest about his recent selection to the Club’s All-time team, voted for by Lilywhites supporters, but admits it’s a fantastic feeling to be recognised by the fans.

“It’s always nice, I only played 70-odd games or something,” he said bashfully.

“I am sure there were better centre backs than me at Preston who played a very long time.

“It’s great because I’m absolutely Preston nuts and I’m honoured but I’m slightly embarrassed as well.”

I'm going to the Preston game. Mainly because I went to Uni in Preston, and it's a good reason to go on the lash with old friends.

But hopefully I'll get to see some of the new boys in action.

Important travel notice for Preston
10th Jul 2013 - Latest News

Liverpool fans travelling to Deepdale on Saturday, July 13 for the friendly match against Preston should be aware that major engineering work between Liverpool-Wigan-Preston will affect their journey.
Rail replacement buses will be in operation and journey times may be significantly increased due to large passenger numbers.
Northern Rail would like to advise customers who would normally use the train to consider alternative transport for this particular match.
It is important that Network Rail carry out this work to improve the reliability of the track along the West Coast Main Line.

Yay, when you thought you couldnt play against the cunt anymore. Kevin fucking Davies signs for Preston..
Someone will get hit by his big arse on saturday.

2000 - 2003 here. We must have crossed paths at Roper Hall or similar. Shit hole. Never been back since graduation lol.
