Pre Match - Bring On Yer Internazionale (a) - Weds 20:00

I’ve been watching Inter highlights for the past 2-3 months and I think they’ll be a tough nut to crack. A physical 3-man midfield who can all pass and score goals (Barella will be a miss, but they’ve got others who can step in), threat on the wings from Dumfries and Perisic and a quality strike partnership of Dzeko and Lautaro up front (with Alexis usually coming on for Lautaro for the last 20 mins). Handanovic can make spectacular saves or drop a clanger and the back 3 are all strong and experienced, but not very quick. They are flexible tactically and can easily switch between playing on the front foot or on the counter.

I think they are the strongest side in Italy by some distance and don’t have any obvious weaknesses. I think Klopp and the players will relish testing themselves again a side with very different tactical ideas and approach compared to what we usually see in England.

Not going to disagree that they're currently the best side in Italy, but if the league is any evidence, and surely its the best we have, they're not the best by a distance. They are behind Milan albeit with a game in hand that if they win would take them 2 points clear of Milan, and 4 points clear of Napoli. This is not a distance. This is nip and tuck.

Back in December they were ripping Serie A apart and blowing teams away by 3 or more goals a game. They seem to have slowed down so this may be a good time to play them. That said, we were quite shit against Burnley and Palace ourselves.

They are a team of wiley old heads, and we sometimes stumble against these.

Milan has picked up form in recent weeks and almost caught up with Inter, but I stand by what I said - Inter look much more solid overall, in fact I would say they are the only Italian side that are of Champions League play-off standard.

They're not gonna be able to cope with our pace and tempo.

Hopefully not. I do worry about Perisic a little bit - he’s a wily old fox and can deliver a perfect cross on Dzeko’s head - Trent will need to be on his toes. Dumfries making late runs in the box is also hard to defend against.

This will be a very tough match and Inter are a very good team. Sure they dont play teams like us very often, but on the other hand we dont either.
Tactical savvy, great defence and set up in a way that might suffocate our game plan.

I get what you're saying Rurik, but a team that is not blowing away the likes of Milan and Napoli this year, when their competition looks very average can't be all that frightening. Don't get me wrong, I know there were certainly easier draws out there, but I feel very calm about our prospects.

I feel reasonably confident too, but just saying it won’t be easy. If people are expecting us to blow Inter away like we did Milan in the group stage, they will probably be disappointed.

FFS I totally forgot about this before I booked my photographic trip to Huangshan Mountain (my 5th) earlier today ! I'll be wrapped up in thermals at around -20C waiting for the dawn and the Sea of Clouds when this kicks off. And be there until well after the match has finished 🙁

How’s the WiFi signal up there?

There's no mind in my doubt that Inter would prefer to play away first. Defensive tactical shut out's etc are in their DNA. Even at home they would take a 1-0 ..2 if poss. We could play 442 and go for a stalemate. But probably go with Salah, Jota, Mane. Playing Old Harv and Diz would be risky.

We need the a tight holding midfield, Virgil won't be playing 5-10 yards off the halfway line. Thiago sometimes dives in giving free free kicks away in dangerous areas, so he has to watch it if he plays. Hendo, Fab and Thiago have experience to see us through.

0-1.

haha well it's on the top of a mountain so although the drone should fly well (GPS) but I'm not so sure about WiFi (I can't remember from last time) - it will be whatever the hotel gives me of course. Not sure how good my telecom signal (if any) will be otherwise I could use that instead.

Away win 1-2 and then the same at Anfield when they'll have to come out and try to win the game. 4-2 agg. win and on to the quarters.
