I was just thinking about this but with a completely different take.

To me we're seeing the same thing in the PL and CL. The two top teams we've played in the PL so far we've really struggled against. Chelsea looked odds on to get the win until they got a red card and City were on top for large parts at Anfield.

Across all three games, we've had a bright period but then lost our control, composure and belief most worryingly. The midfield needs surgery and VVD is a ways off his best.

Yeah that has validity for sure. We are clearly a very good side but I worry we are a player or two away from being a top top side right now.

Milner can't play 90, Robbo looks fucked, Trent was exposed a lot, and we have 3 midfielders injured already

Agree on VvD ... We never really dominated Man City - even when we smashed them, just took advantage of our chances.

In the 3 games you mentioned, 5 points ... so it's not great, but it's not that bad.
As you say, a team that is getting used to a pedestrian midfield (like the link today to that young French DM) and a returning to form VvD and if I'm honest, he's still a few months off where he has to be. Still a good level but he's not there yet.

The fact that we are where we are is amazing. The red cards, pens and moments of genius are what make a season.

We just have to keep beating the dross and hopefully start to pick up our performances against the top sides. Maybe getting Thiago back will help assuming he's still alive.

Ox brought some control to the midfield.
Any sort of high intensity pressing and we seem to just lose control even when leading.
If we are to compete and stay in touch for the titles, need a midfielder in Jan ahead of anything else.
