I doubt their issue is entirely that he used to manage Liverpool. If they appointed Klopp or maybe even Rodgers then I suspect that they wouldn't be kicking off.
I guess that they just wanted someone more exciting. Benitez is a good manager but he's not exactly top tier these days. You don't have big clubs queuing up for Benitez.
The Everton fans know deep down that they have won nothing in 25 years and they barely ever even qualify for Europe. They must know that they aren't in the market for the most sought-after managers, but it's easier to shout 'oh, no, he's a Red' than it is to accept the reality of their situation.
