It's an odd reaction but probably not a surprising one.

I doubt their issue is entirely that he used to manage Liverpool. If they appointed Klopp or maybe even Rodgers then I suspect that they wouldn't be kicking off.

I guess that they just wanted someone more exciting. Benitez is a good manager but he's not exactly top tier these days. You don't have big clubs queuing up for Benitez.

The Everton fans know deep down that they have won nothing in 25 years and they barely ever even qualify for Europe. They must know that they aren't in the market for the most sought-after managers, but it's easier to shout 'oh, no, he's a Red' than it is to accept the reality of their situation.

Benitez just wants a job. He'll work hard, he will do a good job, but it's just a job.

It's a job few want, so most appointments are going to have a risk and a downside. I suspect evertonians would rather someone with more upside, i.e. someone younger and more fashionable. Benitez will be the safest, easiest choice. Either that or someone truly stupid and fanfic, like Duncan.

The others who seem to be on the list aren't that remarkable either, and their issues obviously aren't down to the manager, a merrygoround, structureless. Benitez could solve some of that, if it's in his remit. They need to change the way they are doing everything.

But not because he would use the club as a stepping stone. He clearly doesn't care where he manages but really wants to be local, and I find it quite admirable that he's not just constantly prioritizing his career over all the other aspects of his life, because that allows me to rationalize my own personal failings.

I don’t particularly recall any big Dunc hatred towards the Reds. Sure he’s a blue nose but he also played for Newcastle and is Scottish. He probably would just want to stay put and learn something. I genuinely hope Rafa goes there. It will be funny seeing the Everton fans lose their shit but then look like complete divs when he (in my opinion) does very well there. I’ve nothing against Everton really. Well apart from PIckford who I’d happily whip out my portable electrodes and pliers kit to get even on his assault on VVD. Other than that they are a non entity.

But we don’t want to see him doing very well there. He’s pretty obsessed with sorting out / evolving stuff in the background too, whether it’s training facilities, youth development or internal structuring, so I’d rather Everton not evolve with him.

He did. He was at Dalian Pro on £12m per year. However the pandemic and cut backs to the Chinese league forced by the government will likely mean the days of lucrative contracts have gone.
