Defensive issues obvious now our midfield situation has improved. Johnson and Skrtel to blame for second. Skrtel for penalty. Mignolet very tentative. Definite problems in internal confidence and communication. Something is wrong internally. Confidence in the keeper among the players is clearly low..

Does midfield have any blame for the defensive weakness? Are we letting teams cruise through?

Edit: how great is it that we have to confidence and the ability to come back and win these games. Wasn't always the case, easy to take for granted.

I think its the other way around. We've made 4 mistakes in the last 2 league games and Ming doesnt know whats coming.

Gerrard was poor at tracking runners in the first half, Shelvey was having a field day. Agger played awful in my opinion.

I said it in the match thread and I will say it again we will not finish 4th if we defend like this. we got out of jail twice in the last 2 matches. the defence inc the keeper were a disgrace. sg is not a dm. coutinho was off his game today and suarez looked today like he looked just before arse made a bid for him i.e. he looked like he was sulking. I re-iterate: it LOOKED LIKE. I am not saying he was. we need to sort this out sharpish or 4th will be an if only after the last match of this season.

top scorers in the league with 70 goals but only newcastle in the top 11 have conceded more . what is it ? something like 4 cleansheets in 23 or 24 game ? that's poor . We're kidding ourselves if we think we can keep getting away with conceding so many and out-scoring the opposition , especially away from home.

I wonder if that game will have repercussions for the future of our defence. Maybe not now but in the summer . Rodgers can't be happy with that and he's spilt the agger/skrtel partnership up before when he put carragher back in last season , i wouldn't be surprised if one moves on in the summer . At this stage it looks like agger bit we said the same of skrtel last year so you never know.

I thought you were watching the Winter Olympics for most of the game?

Allen is pushing for a centre mid start, sometimes fitting Suarez/Sturridge/Sterling/Coutinho in the same side leaves us too top heavy.

I don't feel comfortable with Agger in the side anymore.

Been ravaged by injury though. Don't think we've played our first choice back four of Johnson, Skrtel, Sakho, Enrique once this season, have we?
Anyway, a true positive from that match, I've said it once and I'll say it again, sure, of course I love Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard, etc. but I think my favourite player is Henderson.
Fucking love his passion, the fact he yells at other players, you can tell it means so much to him.
Runs for days and leaves it all on the pitch. Great player and improving game by game especially as a leader.
Future captain for me.

Er, we got 3 points today.

Our biggest problem at the back is communication. The one player who sorted that out retired last summer.
We need a new CB to play next to Sakho imho.
Skrtel is good but I see him as a squad player in the future.
We need a dominant and vocal CB.

Agger will leave.

I was disappointed with his first goal celebration though

yes we did. granted but r u seriously saying you were happy with our defence and all of our players perfs?
No, I'm not happy with our defence nor the bi-polar midfield but the team as a whole is winning, grinding out wins when we don't deserve it. When we do play well, it's awesome but we can't realistically play like that in every game. So when we get 3 points and played poorly, it means the team fights for everything and that's a positive.

maybe you can add the missing facts. I am not sure there will be much to add since reading the match thread for the last 4 pages showed that the rest of the match followed the same pattern.
With Allen we had a better presser. Toure coming on stopped the calamity of Agger. Reading the match thread where posters post what they want doesn't really give you the information on the game.

yes some sort of positive yes. but if we aspire to a top 4 finish, we should be beating the likes of Fulham and Swansea more comfortably than we have done in the last 2 matches. if we can play like this against city or Chelsea and still get 3 points then I will say yes a lot of positives here but not when we beat Swansea after conceding 3 goals (no disrespect to Swansea or Fulham)

I agree with that too. that's y I said maybe u can add the missing bits and make me change my mind and forget the calamitous back 5 and non existent midfield at anfield against the mighty swansea

Swansea played really well in our half. To me it looked like our midfield set up wasn't quite right, Couthinho had an off day too. Bring back Sahko pronto

We've beat a lot of teams easily. Some you won't in this league. Even Chelsea struggled from time to time and performed badly. We expect robotic continuity sometimes and perfection, when sometimes all you need from a bad patch is willingness to learn/improve and also get 3 points. We are doing both.

No pl winning team wins week in week out. Didn't city draw to Norwich just last week. Bad performances happen. But we are getting the results, and the manager knows there's defensive problems. I trust he will improve it..

100% yes.

It was very similar to Villa, wide open gaping holes, this is why its hard to be totally convinced by Gerrard playing in the role he is.

Its strange, i mean you would think the better quality teams would punish us badly with that type space afforded to them but we have tonked the best teams to come to Anfield so far, still can't help be more than a bit worried what Chelsea and City might do to us though it wouldn't suprise if we smashed either of them.

Personally i would bring Allen in for those games but again its a shit situation to have to drop Coutinho or Sterling.

This is the exact problem the players had when the game started. A good first goal and we didn't press nor play to our game plan. Assuming it's an easy win, giving them little respect causes us problems. It's the altitude that we're the mighty Liverpool, roll over for us is the reason why we haven't won the league for so long.

This is the first year I've seen where we haven't been doing that, and when it does it gets understood during a game and we grind out a win.

Communication does not come as easily when you have had the amount of disruption at the back we have. Its hard to build an understanding when there is no settled defensive unit. Its good that we are starting to get them back. I think 4 things contribute:
1. As you say - we don't have a real defensive leader.
2. The amount of injuries at the back.
3. Rodgers seems to emphasise the attacking game. I'm OK with that.
4. Similar to #1. Gerrard does not offer us defensively what Lucas does. When we dropped Lucas against Villa they carved us to pieces for 30 minutes. Gerrard has improved a lot since, but today was not his best.

Or you can watch the game rather than the Olympics.

Yes, we seems to think it was game over at 2-0, when truth is, you have to keep pummeling.

yes localny it happens. but city is a near certainty to finish in the top 4 if not win the pl. they are not looking over their shoulders for 4th place. they have enough of a buffer and the best squad. lfc, on the other hand, is having to continuously look over their shoulders because either spurs or neverton just wont go away (looks like neverton have atm).
the manager has know of the defensive problems since the beginning and instead of getting better, it seems that its getting worse.
yes picking up points while playing poorly is great but this will catch up with us sooner rather than later. we wont keep getting out of jail everytime.

Problem is that to me our problems are fundamental, not sporadic as a result of indifferent form. Frequently we look to have absolutely gaping holes in midfield, no protection for the back 4, and then a shambolic defence once teams inevitably attack it. We're also totally reliant on 2 or 3 players in attack, when all our rivals have 8 or 9. The pressure and strain on them is bound to tell in the final couple of months.

We're a good team - excellent on our day - but we'll need a miracle to win the league IMO.
