It's nice to reflect on a pre-Xmas derby victory. Everton were very up for it, with a continuation of the high-energy aggression that so unsettled Arsenal. James McCarthy was central to this, and he did bully us in the first half, in which Everton were on top - just - without really creating too much. Luckily, he went off injured at halftime.
At this point I did think that, while we were staying calm in the teeth of some "provocative" challenges and a noisy crowd of angry gypsy orcs, we were a little too passive, and I was missing the aggression and physicality of a player like Can. It seemed that Lovren (and arguably Milner) was the only one who wanted to get stuck in.
After halftime, the tempo dropped a bit, and we started to dominate the game, keeping possession and starting to make their defence work a bit harder. There still wasn't a huge amount of chances generated, but they were all Liverpool. It needed a change though, as we were starting to drift towards a draw, and Klopp - rather belatedly - eventually did so, with the change everyone wanted - Sturridge.
And it paid off, with Sturridge scuffing a shot onto a post for the incoming steam train Mane to smash in the winner in the 94th minute. Not a derby classic in any way, but so, so very satisfying.
Mignolet (7) Hard to score when he didn't really have much to do, but he claimed a few high balls, and his distribution was (mostly) accurate and also a bit quicker than usual.
Clyne (7) Always involved and willing to join in with the attack, but he can't be expected to do everything himself; quite often when he was in an advanced position, he didn't have anyone in the box to even aim at
Lovren (8) Some of his long passing was, er, "optimistic" but his chest-out aggression was most welcome, and he also pole-axed Lukaku. Drove forward well and while his defending was characteristically ragged at times, he was impressive.
Klavan (8) I thought he had an uncertain start, and he seemed to be watching where Lukaku was rather than the actual ball at times, but after the 30 minute mark, he was generally imperious, making several big tackles and keeping the dangerous Belgian very quiet in the second half.
Milner (7) Tough, single-minded reliable and creative. He can be weirdly sloppy with his short passing at times, but perhaps it's because he is naturally trying to create something, rather than always playing a safe ball. So important to this team and a very fine footballer.
Wijnaldum (7) I was tempted to give a 6, but he was much improved in the second half and so gets bumped to 7. He's perhaps not quite my cup of tea, given he's one of those "tidy" players, but sometimes he does seem afraid to take a chance or have a shot, His goal return is appalling. But he saw lots of the ball, and generally used it well, and he covered plenty of ground.
Henderson (7) Lucky to still have an ankle after that awful Barkley challenge, he never got riled or lost control. Another typical decent 7/10 Hendo performance, but I'm sure he would like a bit more help in midfield sometimes. The way we set up occasionally means he seems a bit outnumbered when people switch positions and move wide. In fairness, Wijnaldum did spot this happening and started shuttling back more often.
Mane (7) I was delighted when we signed him, and get more delighted every day. This was one of his more wayward games, when he resembles a fly that's been stunned, and starts flying sideways. Some of his passing and movement was quite erratic. But despite a constant buffeting by the Uruk-Hai in blue, he never gave up. And when he directs that frightening pace forwards, he causes more panic than a Muslim bus driver in a European town centre.
Lallana (6) Simply could not get going in the first half, and so his contribution was more about the team effort, rather than any moments of match-winning brilliance
Origi (5) Couldn't keep up his proud Liverpool career record of scoring a goal in every game he plays, missing one chance with a wild shot. Seemed to be unsure about where he was playing, dropping deep and going wide to accommodate - or whatever - the movement of Firmino. Mediocre.
Firmino (6). I think I've come to a happy acceptance with Firmino. My issues with him were largely based on what I thought he could be, rather than what he is. With his skill on the ball, hard work and fluidity across the front lines, perhaps I wanted another Suarez. But he isn't that. When I started the brilliant thread about him back in October, I identified him correctly as what he is; a technically skilled, hard running - but slow - attacking player, who isn't a very good finisher, and therefore shouldn't be judged as a proper striker, because he won't ever score enough goals. Naturally, this caused the usual fucking cabbages to have a collective head wobble, and start mewling and spitting their outrage, because he was deffo going to score loads of goals, and as they "rained in" (he scored in two games in succession!) they slapped eachother's humps in happiness. Sadly, the "rain" stopped at a grand total of 5 goals, six games ago, so he's on course to match last season's total of 10. Which is actually about right for the sort of player I described him as. We should not expect more, it is unfair on the player, and anything more is a bonus for the type of player he is. Missed several good chances and had one excellent effort saved. But he only fits into the side on one place, because he's not very good playing wide and only contributes when more central.
