Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks likely to miss the World Cup after suffering a “really bad” injury during Liverpool’s 5-2 Champions League victory over Roma.
The 24-year-old, who has enjoyed a resurgence in form after moving into Liverpool’s central midfield this season, was expected to be named in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man England squad for the World Cup. However, after pulling up with a knee injury in the first half – following a robust tackle on Aleksandar Kolarov – the Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp fears the worst.
“It’s probably a really bad injury [for Oxlade-Chamberlain]. If we can say that already before the scan, that’s never good news so that means for us it’s a massive blow, of course,” admitted Klopp.
“We have still a few very important games to go and the squad doesn’t get bigger in the moment, so we obviously need to be creative in the next few games.”
