Sorry H, but that is even a bigger load of bollocks than I was talking.

How is it?

We wouldn't have signed Suarez without selling Torres. Everyone was winding.why we low balled them then a week or two later increased the bid. We wanted Suarez but couldn't afford him at that price until Chelsea signed Torres, hence the "paperwork " delay.

It's unlikely IMO that we had more than ten million to spend. And that we needed to spend that whole being mindful of the wage bill.

I agree with the karma stuff, it's pointless

As it doesn't exist

Karma's gonna bite you in the arse for that.

So i take it you're not expecting a big net spend this summer then Rosco?

Ross is the bringer of doom and gloom. Booooooo. Ross. Booooooooooooooooooooo

Remember we attempted to sign a further 2 players on deadline day (reputedly 9m offered for Adam and 12m for Young)- that seems to say we were always going to spend around 20m net in the Jan transfer window.

Thats if you think we were willing to go through with both. If we had 20m net to spend them why didn't we go through with one of the deals?

Value for money is a difficult argument to make in light of the Carroll deal at the same time.

I have no idea but it isn't difficult to make an educated guess once the 2010 accounts are available

I agree with Rosco as I earlier pointed out in this thread.

The fact that we could have QUITE easily have snaffled Adam but were determined to haggle away and chip off a million or two suggests that if we did get him it was based on actual net spend and irrelevant in regards to the Torres transfer.

How do you figure that mate? I mean the accounts aren't going to show us what FSG are willing to invest this summer.

I always work on the basis that they won't invest a penny, given our highest level of profit in a year for the past decade was 7m. They know any money invested for transfers is never going to be seen again. It would only make sense to invest in such a manner if we had a new huge stadium and doubts about whether we could fill it. Or if we were in control of our own TV rights and were seeking to broaden our reach

I don't think Torres was afraid of being second best.

If he wasn't up for a challenge, he wouldn't have moved to a side with Drogba and Anelka competing for his spot.

I think it's not the fact he's afraid of being second best, I think he's less likely to put a shift in (providing he's happy) when there are match winners everywhere.

It's pretty much a given that Drogba's gone in the summer anyway and I reckon Torres will have been assured of his position as top striker at the club for next year.

I think he's actually a bit of an idiot. And clearly very vain.

Sure, he might have been frustrated with us, but I think he chose the wrong option - obviously only time will tell, I know - but it sounds like he knows it in his heart already.

Vain is a good word for him. He is over labouring his points on LFC as well.

I can't and won't accept for one minute that Suarez arrival was in any way reliant on Torres going.

It's ok.

That's one thing which makes me reckon robinhood's probably right. Torres sounds as though he's trying to convince himself most of all.

I'm far from convinced we would have met Ajax's asking price of £20M+ for Suarez had it not been for the Torres departure.

We were dicking about offering around £12-13M and that changed very quickly.

I suppose, as per usual, we're left to draw our own assumptions on this.

Wasn't.

i think we were in for suarez regardless and we were playing hardball. Torres decision to leave meant we had to speed up negotiations so we could get him and a replacement. I prefer us playing hardball. same happened with adam and young i imagine. no point getting fleeced

besides big andy obv

I think we were definitely in for Suarez, but bottled it big time with the fee for Carroll.
I'm skeptical as to whether we actually bid for Young and Adam late in the day.

As far as I'm concerned the 10-15m offers were our way of saying your 40m summer valuation was nonsense, we're not going there. There is no way in earth Comolli is so naive as to think we'd get anywhere with that sort of bid. Comolli's recent interview demonstrates he was very much aware of the summer price tag for Suarez. This was posturing, and typical haggling practice. It is clear we wanted Suarez to play with Torres, and we would have to have been stupid to think anything like 10m would cut it. Suarez was always going to be 20+, and we went in knowing that. If we didn't, we may sack Comolli now because he's fucking gormless retard.

The negotiations sped up because arguably we now had the cash to meet their asking price - at least, that's how I see it.

I'd like to think we would have met it anyway, but we'll never really know.

We'll have to wait until the summer before we get any real sense of the wealth behind us. Our squad isn't worth much and we need substantial investment in three to four areas.

Both are matters of fact, not speculation.
