Is Finnan underrated?

I've always kinda felt like he is/was, even though everyone pretty much agrees he was a good player.

Dunno why that is, s'pose it just seems to me that people saw him as a steady Eddie type, and I thought he was better than that

Agree. Both players were underrated on here IMO but Finnan would be my choice - both could play on either wing but he was steadier and more reliable, and I wouldn't really go with the point about Arby's versatility as he was crap at CB, in the Prem anyway.

Finnan for me by miles!
Finnan-Hyppia-Carragher-Riise is one of the finest defenses of all time.

No, but he was a solid LB when we needed one.

And we could with one now.

I don't recall Finnan ever switching to the left.

He didn't much for us (I don't think he was ever selected there, though I believe he switched over during the occasional game) but he certainly played there for the Republic while he was at LFC. I have a vague memory of him filling in at RM for both sides a time or two as well.

He was indeed. Houllier's record with cheap or free players was pretty good around then wasn't it?

It was, but we're forgetting some horrid names unfortunately.

Jean '007' Ferri comes to mind.

Still, 3.5 million to Fulham for Finnan was money very well spent.

That signing nearly didn't come off though. Babbel was signed as a CB, displacing Henchoz to RB originally, and both were dire. Fortunately they were switched, and duly came into their own. Babbel's actually my pick at RB in the All-Time XI.

Well i was trying to forget Ferri yes!

Still, Babbel and Gary Mac for nothing and Hyypia, Henchoz, Finnan and Riise for reasonable amounts were all good buys.

Shame that he bought a lot of shite too, sometimes for large amounts

Strange, thinking about it, that most of his shite buys were black (Diao, Diouf, Cissé, Traore). I suppose Le Tallec and Cheyrou balance that out a little bit. Then again, they ALL spoke French as a first language! Well, except for Biscan...

I forgot Traore. He was cheap too but certainly not a bargain. however poor insua is he is a thousand times better than Traore

Whoa whoa WHOA! djimi scored one of the best goals I've ever seen

Granted it was an own goal but still...

Djimi bore an uncanny resemblance to a newborn giraffe foal, even at his best, BUT he has a Champions League Winner's medal. And he earned it that night.

Sums up his Anfield career quite nicely. The only aspect you left out was how the Kop all held their breath whenever he received the ball - not in a good way, and how Gerrard used to run 20 yards just to take it right off him. He didn't move like a human-being. I think he shared some genes with Crouch; gangly, ungainly, but also strangely fascinating. It was like watching something from a different world.

I hated Traore as a footballer. I felt like I was having a heart-attack in my teenage years every time the ball went anywhere near him.

Just thinking about it makes me squirm.

In a parallel universe somewhere, sometime, Traore scored that Burnley OG in Istanbul in the last minute of extra time and the goal line clearance happened against Burnley.

And I'm facing execution for a 'hate crime'.
