Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo have a huge Pepe Reina story today and claim that he'll likely be going to Barcelona to replace Valdes on a two year deal, with an extended period afterwards where he wouldn't likely to be first choice. Mundo say that Victor Valdes doesn't want to continue until the end of his current contract, which runs until the summer of 2014, and would rather leave the club at the end of this season. They say Barcelona didn't want Valdes to announce publicly that he wasn't going to renew and his decision to ignore that shows how determined he is to leave quickly.
Barcelona are very keen on Liverpool's Pepe Reina because he came through their ranks but they also rate him. thinking that his ability with the ball at his feet would suit their style of play and help ensure a smooth transition after Valdes. It's worth noting that the Catalan press are huge believers of 'what Barcelona want, Barcelona get', so if they reckon Reina is wanted for two years they see little barrier to that happening.
Mundo claim that Reina would be offered a deal which would see him prepare the ground for a younger keeper to come in after him, it could be brought about by a sense of panic. The end of the season is weeks away and Barcelona will want a new keeper as soon as possible if Valdes is so determined to leave in the summer. Reina would be guaranteeed first team football for the first season and probably the second, hence the two year aspect.
Liverpool won't be eager sellers but if it's Reina's dream and Barcelona offer a good fee, Mundo mention just €10m, then they may be prepared to let him go given the service he's provided to the club down the years. The same article also links De Gea but they see him as a more long term solution if things don't work out at Manchester United, seeing as the youngster has just been voted into the PFA Team of the Year then that Barca hope may not come to fruition.
Reina has spoken spoken fondly of Barcelona on several occasions, as has his interview happy father, but he clearly has huge affection for Liverpool and wouldn't leave them in the lurch. A deal which suited all parties, and enabled Brendan Rodgers to bring in a top young goalkeeper, may be a good solution for all involved. Begovic is continually linked with a move and Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to bring in Vorm from his old club Swansea City.
