Pepe -Is the end nigh?

We need to make a big investment to keep both he and Suarez interested. We need to make another Suarez level signing, it'll most likely be Eriksen.

Will it though? Rodgers seems keen to have Suarez in the deeper striker position, with Coutinho also dropping in and coming inside, playing a similar role. If anything we'll be looking for someone on the right handside, assuming that we're not putting our faith in Borini or for the longterm, Downing.

If he's a longterm replacement for Gerrard then maybe, but the priorities unfortunately (on paper at least), seem to be defensive ones, and I'm not sure whether that would have much of a bearing on Suarez's thoughts.

That said, if we sign a centre back, a robust midfielder, a fullback AND someone to play Gerrard's role in the longterm, we'll be well on our way - if we get it right obv.

Get four players spot on and we'll be on our way? God that's depressing. You're right I suppose, but it's depressing.

I really don't think we should be too concerned about keeping Reina happy.

After the amount of clangers he has dropped in late 12/18 months, he should be more interested in keeping the club happy.

It's always the case though isn't it? I'd only say two of them are crucial at this stage though, a commanding centre back and a good midfielder, the rest are more with a longterm view, with players still here who are more than capable of providing cover, for now at least.

I agree, I've always thought that Suarez best position would conflict with Eriksen's best position. However I've been wondering after seeing some comments from Rodgers about his midfielders, if he'd play Eriksen in the centre of midfield. He's a great passer and an intelligent player, and could grow into the position that Gerrard now plays, as you mention. He may be slight, but he's not more so than Allen, so it could work.

You're right though, we need to address the right, however maybe Rodgers plan is to keep Downing and let Sterling grow into that role. I don't think we'll spend big on defence though, maybe a couple of ~£8million signings, not that it's not a priority, I just think it's easier to find value in defence.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, we're always a few players away. Four is actually a lot, so I can't see us sorting four out soon without us losing another player or two in the mean time. We're probably years away.

The story of our life over the last 20 odd years!

Had to find a thread to put this in.

What is going on here !

Thought Pepe could have done better for Villa's goal yesterday tbh.
I posted this elsewhere .... I doubt many keepers in the world could have saved it, Benteke hit it that hard, from relatively close in, giving Pepe no time whatsoever to adjust his position.

Very harsh, Gary. I couldn't fault Reina at all on Sunday. Thought he pretty much solid throughout.

'Outstanding' José Reina is staying at Liverpool, says Brendan Rogers

• Arsenal and Barcelona linked to summer moves for keeper
• Rodgers: 'He's 30 and someone who looks after his body'

Brendan Rodgers expects José Reina to remain with Liverpool next season having insisted the goalkeeper has not been distracted by doubts over his Anfield future.
Arsenal are among several clubs interested in the Spaniard, who has recovered from a rare dip in form last year to settle into Rodgers's style of play. At 30, and as one of the highest earners at Liverpool, Reina does not meet the player profile that the club have pursued since a change of manager last summer but Rodgers is adamant the keeper has a key, long-term role at Anfield.
The Liverpool manager said: "He's never been unsettled and our relationship is very strong. I have given him and a few of the senior boys real responsibility and I think they have enjoyed that. I see him as someone who is going to be here [next season]. He is 30 years of age and is someone who looks after his body. The sports science team this year have worked really well with him. I think he's been outstanding and had great focus and hopefully that will continue for us."
Barcelona, one of Reina's former clubs, have also been linked with the player but Rodgers believes there is no substance to a transfer that Reina's father, Miguel, has claimed could materialise one day.
Rodgers said: "Pepe and I speak a lot. He's a good man and I've got real respect for him as a player and as a human being. He understands everything we are trying to do here and is a great voice in the little debriefing meetings we have with the group and with the defenders and other goalkeepers. He's brilliant. And on a personal level we'll sit and have a cup of tea in the office and we'll chat about where he's at with his game and how he can improve.
"I think a lot of the stuff this year has been based on speculation with [Victor] Valdés going, or possibly going, there have been links they [Barcelona] will be in for another keeper. His dad has said some things and whatever."

If he had Iron mans hands maybe.

Nobody was stoppinog that imo

Take a look at it again if you can.

There actually isnt a great deal of power behind the shot, yes Benteke hits it sweetly but Pepe positioning is all wrong...even at that, he could have got a stronger hand to it and at least kept it out.

It didn't seem obvious at the time but having watched it a few times, particularly from the angle behind the goal, i reckon he should have done better.

Apart from that, he's been playing alot better lately.

In what way? I'm not arguing, just asking. I was having a look for replays but I could only see crap angles, he looked like he maybe moved too far to the right of the goal and tried to move to the centre just before Benteke shot so he wasn't set right and didn't get across far enough.

As i say, i dont think there was alot of power in the shot, well not enough to easily beat a good keeper.

And yeah, Pepe was too far to the right and too far off his line. It happened so quickly and i'm probably nitpicking a bit but i honestly think he could have kept it out.

It's tough to call, the more I look the more I'm inclined to agree but initially I didn't think too much was wrong

It would have been a blinding reaction save that dipping snap shot from nine yards out... out of traffic of the defender... tricky... not unstoppable but it would have been a world class save.

If he keeps playing like he is now then I wouldnt bother with the GK position this summer.
We need to spend our money on defenders and a midfielder.

Agreed if we got to the point where Reina was the worst player in our first XI we would have a much better team then we do now. If there is some young world class goalkeeper available for peanuts then yeah we should be interested but otherwise we have much bigger problems to address
