Pepe -Is the end nigh?

Peps seems to have regained his mojo, very focused today.

Looks like he has shifted a few kilos too, whatever hes doing its working hes been growing back into his old self since January, whether hes putting himself in the shop window or getting his act together i couldnt really say but either way its good to have a keeper who inspires confidence in his defence rather than terror

It was good to see Reina launch one of his exocet long passes to create the first goal yesterday. With all the tippy-tappy bollocks going on at the back we haven't been seeing that as a weapon lately. Was a classic bit of Reina counterattacking vision, and nice to see it back on the menu.

I'd keep him and encourage him to give a fuck by not playing like a bunch of no hopers in front of him.... we all know he can do it we also know he is a great influence in the dressing room and we have been in a death spin for three years now.... i'd say keep him.

He's a great keeper - remember (most don't, it seems), we used to have WESTERVELD, then DUDEK! Reina has been a gem of a player who probably deserved to be in a better team. Even below par he's better than a team of this current status deserves. The amount of crap he takes on forums is crazy. He was great yesterday, show him some damn support. Oh yes, and get the defence in front of him sorted out!

In fairness, Dudek was a very good keeper until his sudden loss of form in the final two seasons or so.

He was never, ever, a keeper who inspired much trust as far as I'm concerned. Certainly as far as match-to-match consistency is concerned I'd take Reina every time.

Great post, Macca. I totally agree. At his peak he was one of the best keepers in the world.
He wasn't at his peak in the lat couple of seasons, but he still is a very good keeper.

BTW, we also had Kirkland and Carson who were marked as potential England keepers but never got anywhere near good enough.

Best performance of the season by a long way. It's been a good while I've seen him make a save I didn't expect him too. He looked sharp and his reactions were as quick as ever.

Hopefully he stays for at least another year. As I've said previously, the defense is going to need sorting out and so is our midfield set-up, and there's only so much you can do in one summer.

Great post, he also is so good distributing from the back ensuring we keep possession, compare and contrast with Joe Hart for example who good goalie though he is, is an utterly useless footballer who hoofs the ball unnecessarily

I like the new leaner and quicker Pepe. If he wants to stay, I think nobody can possibly push him out on this form.

I still think Ter Stegen is the future though. And if not just Barca but any other top makes a move for Pepe in the summer, I am pretty sure he will choose to leave.

For once I don't agree. I thought The Dude was doing well until that disastrous game against the Mancs when Forlan knocked a couple past him. Do you know if it's true that GH tore into him in front of the other players after the game?

I don't know about the last bit, but the rest is bang on. He was brilliant until that point and then his confidence seemed to be in tatters. He more than redeemed himself in the final though.

If I remember correctly, I think it was that 0-1 defeat away to Boro that started his decline. I thought it was further on in his LFC career; ended up it was just midway through his second season. Before that, he was simply outstanding, even getting a nomination for the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year award (alongside Kahn and Buffon).

Anyway, against Boro, he came out for a cross, clattered into Hyypia I think, and they scored a soft goal. It was the first league game we'd lost that season; we were on a roll scoring freely (but letting in a few due to a suddenly more expansive game) but then we went to the Riverside Stadium, reverted to a mysteriously defensive, subdued game, and lost.

The following month, the Man United game happened.

Dudek error hands Liverpool first defeat

Liverpool were made to pay for their lack of ambition here when a rare mistake by Jerzy Dudek with nine minutes remaining handed Middlesbrough their most celebrated victory under the management of Steve McClaren.

It meant that the last unbeaten record in the senior English game had gone, but the Merseysiders had only themselves to blame. The game appeared to be heading towards a decidedly dreary goalless draw when Szilard Nemeth hoisted the ball into the penalty area.

It looked a straightforward catch for Dudek, but under pressure from substitute Alen Boksic he dropped the ball as he fell to the ground, possibly colliding with a team-mate, and Gareth Southgate had a simple tap-in. Boksic, for once not troubled by illness or injury, will no doubt claim an assist; he has to have something to show for his £60,000-a-week salary.

If either side deserved to win this game Middlesbrough certainly did but the way Liverpool are set up these days, particularly away from home, a side with anything about them are obliged to attack. Liverpool were aiming for a personal Premiership best of eight consecutive victories but if it was to come, it would be more by accident than anything else - just as Middlesbrough's win was.

McClaren's side must have thought their quota of chances had gone when Massimo Maccarone was adjudged to be in an offside position when he lashed in a cross from Geremi. And when Dudek brilliantly pushed away a fierce left-footer by Nemeth a few minutes later, one thing seemed certain: a Middlesbrough goal would not come cheaply. Wrong.

Yet for all the oohs and aahs from a capacity home crowd, there was barely a suggestion early on that Middlesbrough might succeed where all others in England had failed so far this season.

Liverpool may not be the prettiest team in the country but they are devilishly difficult to break down. Against defences as compact as theirs chances are few, and when they come have to be taken.

Middlesbrough's only scoring opportunity in the first half arrived five minutes before the break and was scandalously refused. Jonathan Greening's neat footwork had been one of the few highlights and when he found the space for a measured cross, the unmarked Geremi was afforded the formality of a simple nod-in at the far post, having done hard part by out-jumping John Arne Riise. Inexplicably, he headed wide.

Profligacy had cost Middlesbrough in the North-East derby earlier in the week at St James' Park and they could ill afford to be as wanton again, particularly against a side like Liverpool. McClaren had observed in his programme notes that his side lacked Premiership guile and only four of his players were truly experienced in the English league.

Know-how is what Liverpool have steadily developed under Gerard Houllier, although Sir Alex Ferguson may have had a point - at least in respect of Liverpool - when he said Arsenal and Liverpool put strength and pace ahead of skill and technique.

With Michael Owen operating on his own up front, even if speedily supported from midfield by Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy, Liverpool make for some mundane viewing.

Not surprisingly, their best chance was made and created by Owen when he came off Gareth Southgate to hook the ball wide after 22 minutes.

Ter Stegen is Barca bound this summer is he not?

Not confirmed by anyone, bar one newspaper.

His agent has denied it, for whatever thats worth

But I think every top club in Europe will be after him so chances are pretty slim on that one, hes gonna be a monster though. Whoever signs him has their goalkeeping position sorted for about 12 years

I didn't notice The Dude's performances going downhill after the Boro game personally (though I do agree that that was a watershed game overall, because the outfield players visibly hated being told to get back to the defensive stuff, and I reckon that game was the beginning of the end for GH). For me it was definitely the fiasco against the Mancs at our place which was the start of The Dude's decline.

Yeah it was, its funny how one game can totally destroy a player mentally, funnily enough I always maintained that it was Dudeks save against Shevchenko in the Cl final that ruined the Ukranian. He was never the same player again, look at his face after Dudeks double save its like the world has ceased to make sense to him anymore

Great game and it was all down to him that it wasn't a 4-3 or similar

But, if his form is because he has lost 3 kilos and trained harder that is not a good attitude is it. Top pro should never have to diet mid season.

Time for young blood with hunger

I think you'll find Pepe has plenty of hunger. Hence the need for a diet.

If that was the case why did he look so overweight at the beginning of the season? True hunger is like carra who keeps himself in shape even when on holiday break.

I was taking the piss, I meant a literal hunger for pies and various other foodstuffs.

Oops lol ok that was a big WHOOSH over my head. My excuse is its Monday morning so i haven't woken up yet. Lame excuse i know but i'm sticking to i.

Ha. Major whoosh.

Dudek was a fantastic keeper up until the end. Reina still is a fantastic keeper. We should really try to hold on to him.

We need to make a big investment to keep both he and Suarez interested. We need to make another Suarez level signing, it'll most likely be Eriksen.
