Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal to appoint Manuel Pellegrini as their next manager.

On Thursday, the 56-year-old's agent Marco Piccioli confirmed that his client was in talks over taking the managerial reins at Anfield, saying: "We are evaluating the operation and will soon have a new meeting to better define the final details of the contract."

Reports in Chile now claim that the former Real Madrid coach signed a deal with the Reds yesterday morning following negotiations.

Pellegrini was dismissed from his role in the Spanish capital after failing to prise the La Liga title away from Barcelona last season despite his side amassing 96 points and netting over 100 goals.

His imminent appointment is expected to be welcomed by Pepe Reina, who worked under him during his time at Villarreal.

The Spain stopper believes Liverpool can expect a "really tough" season ahead if Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres leave the club following Rafael Benitez's departure and the continuing reluctance of the Anfield board to relinquish significant transfer funds.

He said: "Of course there is concern about Fernando and Stevie. Not just them, but others, too.

"Any team would count on Stevie and Fernando as big names and, for us, it’s the same.

"Without them, it would be really tough to be up there at the top next season."

He won't know any premiership sides or players bar the top sides. Will be a season of learning for him. let's hope he has a burning ambition and loves Liverpool. And he's not just coming for the money.

But while he is the second most successful South American club coach in Europe over the past 25 years, the feeling is that he will face far tougher tests at Madrid than ever before.

Wonder who's the most successful one.

Might be a good thing. He'll send our team out to play our way rather than worry about how the opposition will be set up.

What? Nooooooooooooooooooo...

Get Capello!

(Btw, that agent is the same one who's quoted in the Mascherano-to-Inter articles. Someone should take him out. And I don't mean to a restaurant.)

Pelligrini clearly has an entirely different footballing philosophy to Rafa.

He hasn't been bullied into defeat by a Sam Allardyce team yet.

Agree I would take Capello in a heart beat followed closely by Van Gaal.

Rafa knew all about the opposition, too much in many instances. Let him come here, get us playing football again and hopefully get the best out of what we've got, let everyone else worry about us.

I thought the way up call for rafa, and what rocked rafa to the core was the first bolton game where liverpool were kicked into the air and bolton recieved little or no punishment.

I don't like the thought of yet another La Liga manager coming here and understanding nothing about the Premier League. I think we're wasting more time, money and nerves on this one.

We really need to have a British manager now.

Yawn.

What the club needs at the minute is someone to instill a bit of passion into the players, teach them what it means to wear the jersey, what it means to play for our great club, our great fans. At the present moment theres only one choice as far as i'm concerned. King Kenny.

Failing that i'm sure Pellegrini would give it a good shot.

*Awaits someone to mention how he still didn't win the title despite spending a quarter of a billion euros...in 2 months*
