Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is weighing up a January loan move for Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Liverpool have been told that West Ham striker Carlton Cole will cost the Anfield club £20m.

Wouldn't be a bad loan signing, but very unlikely Harry would loan him to Liverpool. Plus Robbie would probably have a word or two to say to Roman about Rafa.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez wants Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko on loan

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is spending the international break considering his options for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

And while it is unlikely he will have funds available to make a permanent signing, the Anfield boss will look for a loan striker to act as cover.

The Spanish coach has sounded out advisors for Spurs forward Roman Pavlyuchenko, who indicated yesterday that he will press to leave the London club in January after failing to gain a regular first team place.

Benitez sees him as the ideal stand in for Torres, and given his international pedigree he could do a job for Liverpool to put him into the spotlight before the World Cup gets underway next summer.

The Liverpool manager will also think about approaching his former club Real Madrid to talk about taking Dutch forward Rafael van der Vaart who has confirmed he will be leaving the Bernabeu in the January transfer window.

Benitez will hope to get either player on loan, with the idea of a permanent deal in the summer when he will have more transfer funds.

He will look to finance the wages of any loan signing by offloading Italian defender Andrea Dossena, who is close to concluding a deal with Napoli to take him back home when the window opens.

Pavlyuchenko has admitted he is desperate to leave Tottenham because six months on the bench has cost him his place in the Russian team.

Asked if he was planning to leave in January, the striker said: "Yes, because it's impossible for me to stay in the present situation.

"I've been sitting on the bench for half a year now and because of that I've lost my place on the national team."

VDV would be interesting, me thinks it's very unlikely though.

What a sad state of affairs - seeking reinforcement from a Spurs reject... on loan.
...and who is behind 2 ex-strikers of ours in the pecking order.

I thought Pavlyuchenko looked really good for Russia in the Euros playing alongside Arshavin, but he's definitely one of those strikers who needs a quick, intelligent partner. At Liverpool, he'd be asked to play a lone striker role most of the time, and I just have a bad feeling he'd be a blunt weapon - a white Heskey.

VDV on loan would be more interesting.

And yes, it's sad Keni, but clearly if there's no money we've just got to deal with the situation as it is - and loan moves for unsettled players are the obvious solution.

I know, but it's still relatively early days in our broke period, so I'm still allowed to wallow a little.

If VDV is available and willing to come to England, his signing should be a given. We can't afford to not get him.

McCarthy,Cole, Pavlyuchenko FFS

The fact we are desperately scratching around for other teams players or even bench warmers shows why RAFA has managed our squad badly.

He has let strikers go without considering their replacements, the whole Stevie playing up front with Nando has clouded RAFA's judgement.

We should have kept Keane or at least Crouchy, everyone can see that FFS

We are not acting like a top 4 club, Rafa is embarrassing us at the moment with this chase a striker shite

Yeah, how embarrassing. Trying to buy a striker - and off *another* club as well! Which other top 4 club has ever done anything so embarrassing?

don't be wet, we are never going to get Cole, we will not spend more than a few million in Jan.

Do you really think another top club would be chasing strikers from other clubs who only get a game in the carling cup.

Its pathetic, Rafa should have considered Torres injury record before the season started.

Rafa has done some great things but this cover for Torres car boot sale in Jan is down to simple bad planning

there's no money for players that's why we didnt get a striker, not because we didnt want to

VDV on loan would be the best January signing we could make. The cunts should buy a striker though or they can forget top 4

You know what. I really like this link.

I was actually hoping for us to sign him in the first place before he went to Spurs, were he obviously haven't done so well, but I think it's just a case of him cathing a bad case of Mascheranoes.

Alongside Arshavin and Jerkoff he was easily the Russians most influential player during the Euros and he's also a big, strong-ish lad who ticks a lot of the boxes.

This would be my prefered striker-choice (hoepfully) within our budget.
Well, Masher didn't turn out to bad and he wasn't exactly setting the world at fire at the mighty Upton Park either.

Form is temporary. Class is permanent... and all that Jazz.

Having seen Pavlyuchenko at the Euros I think it's fair to say he's got talent in abundance. Wouldn't be a bad bet at all in my opinion.

What's the whingeing about? Potentially signing a striker on loan who could get goals, and would cost nothing but wages. What do people expect, us to go out and shell out £35m on Aguero?

Benayoun, Mascherano are examples of other smaller league teams misfits, the Saha Fergie had signed was a big flop earlier at Newcastle I seem to remember. Pavlyuchenko, Van der Vaart etc may not be long-term transfers, but they could help stitch up some holes that the likes of Voronin et all are incapable of.

As I said in another thread, throw a rock and you'll hit a premiership striker that would improve our squad.

Pavlyuchenko wouldn't be anyone's first choice, but for the money if we could actually get him on loan, it would be a significant improvement. Sure, it says more about the situation we have got ourselves in up front than about Pavlyuchenko, but it would help.

Benayoun was a regular for West Ham

Ferguson bought Saha off Fulham, where he was on fire

I will do a rage here.

If we get him and he turns out bad, it is rafa's fault.

If he turns out good, it is rafa's fault for not getting arshavin instead.

end of debate.

VDV? Would definitely not be my first choice...not even the 10th so I reckon I would prefer Pavlyuchenko. We don´t have much to loose with these options.

Why the need to bring rage name into it?

You CAN have your own opinion Y1. That's two threads now.

Benayoun was a regular for West Ham, but I'm sure he was increasingly used on the subs bench near the end.

The point is, Saha flopped at Newcastle, but not so long later was a prolific goalscorer for United (and Fulham).

Let's not ruin more threads by summoning Rage. Attack him point by point until he changes the topic, ignore him, or hope we win a couple so he posts less (the least likely on current evidence).

They sold Berbatov, Keane and Carrick to Top 4 clubs.

Hang on....

Rage is much better at it than you. Give it a rest.

I suggested Pavlyuchenko in the 'realistic strikers thread'.

On loan it'd be a handy deal and I don't believe we can afford to be snobby.

Besides, United practically dragged an aged Henrik Larson from the Sweedish League! Needs must.

Yeah, I don't understand why some are adverse to having him here on loan. It's not like we're overflowing with money.
