I think we have to start treating Origi like a big talent he is. This guy is a coach's dream – physical and technical ability in abundance, great work-rate and tactical awareness for a 20-year-old, attitude so far couldn't be better. He is still 2-3 years away from the time most attacking players make their breakthrough into full maturity, but he already contributes so much. In terms of the overall team-play, I think only Firmino at the moment is better at making our attack tick.

I don't care that Origi is not an "instinctive finisher" – his power and mobility will ensure he will always get scoring chances and he'll put away plenty of those with just a bit of calmness (which he seems to have) and a bit more "bite" to his shot (which he will develop with age). Together with Can and Coutinho, I think Origi is one of the biggest talents we have at the club. That transfer committee wasn't so useless after all!

I've been saying it for a year.

Some people have been having a pop at him for not scoring enough goals, but that's missing the point. Origi's just a different sort of player - he's someone who can genuinely lead the line as a spearhead - like Drogba, Diego Costa or Lewandowski. Typically, that sort of player is someone who has a very strong overall game - good physique, good pace, and good technical skills as both a face-the-goal player and a back-to-goal player. That sort of player is also typically a late bloomer as a goalscorer. Drogba had his first double digit scoring season when he was 24. So did Costa. Lewandowski also took a season or two to establish himself as a goalscorer at Dortmund. It's because that sort of player has to focus a lot on other parts of his game.

Very different from the Sturridge, Owen, Torres type of striker, who can just focus on their quick acceleration and finishing. Their ability to make an impact as a goalscorer is just more translatable from the youth teams to the pros.

Origi deserves some patience, because I seriously see Drogba/Costa/Lewandowski potential in him.

Divock Origi has vowed to build on his impressive performance for Liverpool in their Europa League quarter-final first leg with Borussia Dortmund.
The young striker vindicated Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start him ahead of Daniel Sturridge as he opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion.
Origi, who caused Dortmund problems throughout, said he felt inspired to deliver by the support he received – both from his manager and the 3,400-strong travelling Kop who chanted his name vociferously.
“I could feel the support from the fans and it gave me a big boost,” Origi told the ECHO.
“It does make a difference to experience that. It was playing against a big team and as the striker I had a big responsibility.
“I felt the support of everybody from the coach to my team-mates and the fans. Everyone tried to help me as much as possible and it showed in my performance.”
Origi, who only discovered he was starting earlier in the day, carried out Klopp’s orders perfectly as he put in a tireless shift.
The 20-year-old hadn’t started in Europe since the group game in Sion back in December.
“I only knew I was playing when I saw the team,” he said.
“I was happy to play in such an important game, which is what you strive for as a footballer.
“We worked a lot tactically. The manager knows my qualities and told me just to use them.
“Everyone said I should play to my qualities, which is getting in behind the defenders and taking them on one-on-one and of course, importantly, scoring. I’ve very happy that I could do this.”
Origi’s sixth goal of the campaign arrived before the break when he latched on to James Milner’s flick on and kept his cool to finish clinically.
“I saw Millie going for a header and I read his game a little bit and went deep,” he said.
“When the ball came to me I could feel the defender was close and usually they open their legs so I tried to shoot it to the other side and it went in.”
After a tough start to life at Anfield, Origi has blossomed under the guidance of Klopp. He has kicked on since returning to action in February following a hamstring injury.
During his time on the sidelines he was put on a weights programme by Klopp and bulking up has given him the strength to go with his pace.
Through time spent on the training ground, the German coach has also given him the tactical intelligence to go with his raw natural ability.
“I’ve been in the gym and I do a lot of extra work,” Origi said.
“I learn from a lot of the players like Kolo Toure for example. I just try to pick up little things from everywhere.
“It also helps that we are really intensive in training and games, which makes me stronger.
“I have learned a lot, I’ve adapted a lot. I’m still young, only 20 and people sometimes forget that.
“I’m grateful to be at this big club, where people believe in me and everything is here for me to become a big player which is my aim.
“I’m happy that I’m making these steps and hopefully that continues.”The away goal, which was cancelled out by Mats Hummels’ header, puts Liverpool in a strong position in the tie.
However, Origi insists they will need to replicate that kind of performance at Anfield next Thursday.
“For me, there’s no favourites,” he said.
“We are a good team and they are a good team.
“We have to show on the pitch we are capable of doing good things and we have to finish it off at Anfield.
“We have to be confident and if we are at 100%, we will go through.
“I saw that Dortmund appreciate Jurgen Klopp a lot, which tells you about the person he is and also what he achieved here. It was special to see.”

Impressive interview. If it's a true reflection of him, that's quite a mature 20-year-old, especially for a footballer.

Origi has immense potential. I've been saying for ages that he could be our lukaku or drogba. Great power, pace, strength with a good work ethic. Yeah he'll never be as good as sturridge in front of goal but he can be a great player for us if we give him time to develop.

Yep, he's a great talent alright. Shame some of our fans gave up on him so early but he'll prove them wrong in the end.
Those 4 extra kgs of muscle he has put on has really helped him. Klopp seems to really rate him and I hope he continues to develop.
We'll have a great player on our hands if he does.

Great posts from Dmishra and Rurik.

So are we comfortable with Sturridge, Origi, Ings and (possibly) Firmino next season?

Naah, Sturridge is liable to break down any second, and Ings will be coming back from a career changing injury. Relying on a 21 year old Origi alone is just stupid.

We need a proper goalscorer to come in place of Benteke.

If we sign Goetze that'll be another player who can play as a false nine, I still think a relevant replacement for Benteke is a must though.

A bit of everything in that performance. He fully justified getting the nod over Sturridge.

Its getting to the point where I would be surprised if Sturridge was here next season. Hes playing like a guy who has decided not to risk his fitness ahead of the Euros this summer.

Good performance from Origi last night but if hes going to lead the line for us we really need more of a goal threat from the supporting players. We have a lot of midfielders who are not pulling their weight in front of goal and that heaps pressure on the striker, Im not sure Origi is ready for that.

He was excellent last night. The Dortmund defenders didn't know what to do with him. Dare I say he is playing like an in form Heskey without the shot.

Sell Sturridge and Benteke. Sign someone good with pace who is a proper number 9 leader of the line. And who can get 20 odd a season.

You then have the following

Number 9: New striker / Origi

Support / Deeper Lying Striker: Firmino / Ings

I hope the love-in isn't based on the back of a deflected goal. I like Origi, and I think he has got something, but, I don't see where he fits in presently. In the summer we 'should' be looking for a first choice striker for the starting XI that will play nearly all games when fit. And considering Kloppo likes mainly to have one up top, we've got Benteke, Sturridge, Balotelli, Ings, Firmino, Origi as backup for him?
I'd get Origi back out on loan next season, to a much better team if possible, and see if he progresses and has some consistency. We really need a quality always-fit striker coming in in the summer, and I don't believe that's Origi, and I don't want him rotting on our bench and getting the odd 10mins like Benteke either.

I think we need @manwithnoname to keep it up. He was laying into Firmino regularly just as the Brazilian turned a corner and became our most dangerous player. Now his dismissal of Origi seems to be having positive effects.

Let's not start sucking eachother's cocks just yet.

My issue with Firmino is still his use as the main attacking threat as a striker - as Klopp was doing - and he doesn't score enough goals to do that, or have enough of the attributes to do so. Let's not forget that he's still only scored 9 goals in all competitions. Playing him behind a striker? Fine.

As for Origi, he was very good last night, but he still doesn't look anything like a reliable finisher, and is nothing more than useful backup at the moment. There appears to be a fanciful idea that he's going to suddenly turn into Lukaku or something. Nah.

I won't labour the point, but we need more goals; we need AT LEAST another striker and another attacking midfielder/ winger. We've been outscored by Everton this season. The top four have all scored more goals. We will never get there if we start thinking Divock Origi and Firmino are all we need.

If both players continue to improve next season and have more quality support, then we can make a better judgement call. So far, Origi has shown he can work hard and run. That's about it. And Firmino has had one purple patch in January, in which he scored half of his goals. I think we need a bit more than that to get really excited.

They're both great if all we want or expect is to finish 6th. Which would be an improvement on 9th, and higher than we will finish this season.

I really like how content he seems to be when on the ball under pressure. A few time last night he was being cornered but didn't seem to panic.

Football is very much a confidence game and with Origi, like probably everyone else in the team, it has been way low for a long time but now it seems several of our players (bar Sturridge perhaps) seems to gain confidence most weeks, including Origi - and then it's obvious to see why we were in for him in the first place, lost of key attributes and lots of potential in him.

I am not too worried about his lack of goals at this point either, they'll come soon enough if he can keep up his current progress

Mors was delighted when we signed Benteke in the summer for 32.5 million.
He's a shouty moron.

I don't actually think Brendan is Mors or anything like him. Just letting Brendan know he's on team Mors on this one.
