Apparantly Roy Hodgson is trying to fast track Jack Grealish (the Joey Essex caravan dwelling looking motherfucker) into the England setup even though he has represented Eire at under 21.

Two things.
Are we ok with players playing for teams up to under 21 then playing for a different country? In some cases they even play friendlies then move countries.
This isnt cool with me at all. You shouldnt be allowed to play for a country because youve lived there for 3 years. If you play at any level in a fifa tournament that should be it as far as im concerned.

Also, anyone got any thoughts on the kid? I havnt seen him play at all. Just another in a long line of Januzaj's and Oxlades and another bang average footballer.

I agree, although the England cricket team would be in trouble if their similar rule was scrapped. There's the special case of countries splitting up and various other political issues, but players who just fancy playing for a supposedly 'stronger' nation - nope.

This kid has got a long, long way to go before he should be playing full internationals. He's one of those players who disappears for ages in games, and then shows just enough class to appease some of his critics, but he's got a lot to learn. And if he doesn't grow out of that stupid belief that shin pads are not worth wearing he'll probably spend much of his time injured.

I like Grealish - I think we should buy him - although his grandad played for Villa or was it his great grandma ?

As it currently stands he wouldnt get a game for England on merit, hes only being fast tracked to stop him playing for Ireland. Ireland on the other hand could use him badly. Hes a very good young player but nowhere near the finished article yet. As a principle I dislike what Hodgson is doing here, he doesnt need him he just doesnt want anybody else getting him, its the Chelsea approach to international football, on the other hand we have stolen the likes of McGeady and McCarthy from Scotland recently so we cant complain to much if he switches camps. That said I think its a bad decision for him to make now.

I think he's English born, he just used Irish relations to play with our underage teams.

I haven't seen an awful lot of him but I think the amount of column inches dedicated to him far outweigh his ability.

The push is coming from our side where we want him to declare for us, but he now is thinking he's good enough for England and Hodgson is in a no win position.

If I was Hodgson I'd call him up for the next game, stick him.on the bench - bring him on for the last couple of minutes. That ends the discussion, then pick him again if he is good enough. He's done fuck all to warrant a call up though

His uncle Tony was a stalwart of the pre Jack Charlton Ireland team that was unlucky not to make to it a big competition given some of the talent it in (Stapleton, Brady, O'Leary, Lawrenson, Kevin Moran, Chris Hughton)

Yeah thats the issue though, he might never be good enough for England, and might be ending his chances of playing international football.
As a footballer would you not rather have 100 caps for your country than 10 for an adopted one.

The kid is talented though. He could have a chance at playing for England one day.
But he certainly hasnt done enough to warrant a call up to the England team.
To call him up so he can get a cap for England is just ludicrous though.
Let him perform in the league until he's good enough, if he gets impatient and selects one country over the other just because they offer to fast track his international career, it just says a lot about his attitude.

Are there many players that switches from u-21 to a different nation?
I feel that could be more an issue in England/Wales/Ireland/NI/Scot.

It just shouldnt be a thing.
A player should play for the country he is born in, or plays youth international football for unless politics or war.

I think it is the other way round mate.
He is English but has played for Irish youth teams.
Due to the scarcity of decent Irish players he could well get one hundred caps for them though he has a considerable amount of improving to do before he could be considered as a regular England starter.

I think the problem arises because nobody's ever bothered to think up coherent rules for deciding a person's nationality. Because the rules are unconvincing you end up with discretion playing a far too big role.

I've never thought where you're born should have anything to do with it. It should go on who your parents are and where you spent your formative years (say between 0 and 18), with the latter being more important. If you don't have perhaps 12/18 years spent in one country then look at nationality of parents.

IMO someone like Jordon Ibe should never have had the option of playing for Nigeria. It was ridiculous. He's clearly English.

I wouldn't say born in necessarily I was born in Northern Ireland, but left when I was 3 months old and have never returned. I've got no affinity to the place whatsoever. I agree with your more general point, though. The standard of your international team shouldn't really come into it. It should be about pride at wearing your nations shirt and little else. .

Id much rather we got rid of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland teams and just had a British team.

If a player has a passport he should be eligible for that country's national team and for no other IMO. If he doesn't have a passport by the time of his first international call-up I'm cool with a player being able to choose which team he plays for, because neither his place of birth nor his parents' nationality will necessarily define which nationality he considers himself to belong to. However, I definitely don't think swapping to another team later on should be permitted. To me that just makes a mockery of the whole thing.
