Away at Villa

The lad with the brightly coloured face is Joe Maguire. AKA Joe the Redman. Massive red and knows most of the players.

A few quotes about Gerrard from past/present players and people in the game.

Emre Can: “He is the greatest captain the club has ever had – it’s as simple as that.”

Jordan Henderson: ‘I’d have to say Steven Gerrard has been the biggest influence in my career so far. I watched him when I was younger and then to go and play and train with him every day is massive for me, and still is now.”

Riise: "I wouldn’t normally post anything when a player plays his last game, but Gerrard is not just a player. He is “THE” player."

Torres: “He is without doubt the greatest player I have ever played with, he has everything. At Liverpool, he is irreplaceable.”

Kaka: “I am a huge fan of Steven Gerrard, He has the heart of a lion. He is a player I would like to have in my team.”

Toti: “Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World XI dream team.”

Mourinho: "I think that tomorrow Gerrard's going to feel that the decision to play for LFC was worth it. He will be a big legend for life."

Pirlo: 'While at Milan, Ancelotti came to me and said "I want to sign Steven Gerrard to play next to you in midfield - what do you think?" "Without any hesitation I told him "do it - go and sign him". He was probably the most complete midfield player in Europe (in -07)."

Fucking bored of the Gerrard last game at Anfield circus now.

I am well done with hero worship at this stage of my life and I know the knobheads on Sky will drag it out till the death but I still think it is okay to acknowledge and celebrate the great player that was Steven Gerrard.
I suspect it might be a while before we see his like again.

Can all the cynical old farts fuck off out of this thread? If you can't allow other people to get a bit emotional over the departure of a player like Gerrard then you're done with football.

I'm as sad as anyone that he's leaving, I'm not having a pop at anyone in this thread, it's all the bollocks on the telly and in the media that's doing my head in.

So this 'old fart' will stay where he wants. Thanks.

Just do it the way I do it now. Don't read papers, don't watch sky sports, don't listen the football shit on the radio.

I'm going tomorrow and I'm not a big emotional person. I'm a horrible twat these days. But I know I'm gonna be fucking gutted all day.

I can't be arsed with the media jumping on it. But he deserves all the adoration he's getting this week.

You're just to good to be true,
Can't take the ball off of you,
You've got a heavenly touch,
You pass like Souness to Rush,

And when we're pissed in the bars,
We thank the lord that you're ours,
You're just to good to be true,
Can't take the ball off of you,

Oh Steven, Steven, Steven Gerrard,
Oh Steven, Steven, Steven Gerrard,
Oh Steven, Steven, Steven Gerrard,
Oh Steven, Steven, Steven Gerrard,

Oh Steven Gerrard
Because he hates Man U,
Oh Steven Gerrard,
He hates the blueshite too,
Oh Steven Gerrard,
You're a red through and through

Yeah, I realised at about half 6 today (having been woken up at 6am by my delightful kids) & it made me feel queasy.

It's odd, I do genuinely think he needs to go for a number of reasons, but he's a massive loss still & the memories that man has given me are astonishing in their timescale.

No one man can be bigger than the club, but not since Billy Liddell has any man come so close.

I wonder whether playing over there will be the easy ride it's claimed to be. If he's looking for somewhere to play at a slower pace, is it a good choice at all? They're super fit over there these days, and they play at a fairly high pace all through the game. And travelling around the country will be more draining than the odd Europa League away game. His spectacularly vacuous wife will no doubt love the shopping, and will probably piss off to Dubai for about a thousand 'vacations,' as she does already, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if he only does a year there.

Anyone know where I can find a picture of Steven Gerrard with his hands up in front of his banner in high resolution?

Cheers

Not even Shankly and Dalglish???
Shanks is probably more so, but I was thinking of as a player (although I didn't write it, obv).

Dalglish I'd argue slightly less so simply cos unlike Liddell & Gerrard, he wasn't surrounded by players so much inferior than he on such a regular basis so as a player the weight of the club wasn't on his shoulders (as a manager it was & he dealt with that admirably in every way).

Personally I don't buy that part of the argument. Messi doesn't deserve to be downgraded because he's surrounded by stars. For me, to be the main man in a great team, to outshine all the others, is hardly a weakness.
Its more difficult to be the best player in a brilliant team. I'm completely on board with you macca

Obv objective. I can understand the argument for both sides. Gerrard being held back by the squad, Kenny getting helped by the squad

It is going to be an emotional day at Anfield today, love him or hate him Liverpool fans will be bidding farewell to a real one off, the like of which we'll never see again in the red shirt.

Good luck Glen Johnson

I think he will probably do well - but I think it's telling that he has spoken of playing with less "pressure" over there. While of course it WILL be less pressure than captain in your hometown team, one of the largest and most famous in the world, I worry that he is coming into this phase of his career in vacation mode. And, as you note, the athleticism in MLS is quite good - it's the technical standard and tactical awareness that is mediocre/poor. He may get frustrated at the well-placed balls that teammates don't trap, the runs in front that don't occur, the opponents that run right past him -- kinda sounds like some of our seasons when I put it like that...

Well I suppose.... at least his Hollywood passes will get respect at his new club.

He probs cost us a CL place by being such an impetuous bellend but I'm not holding it against him or anything.
