whelan has told reporters he expects to sell N'Zog to a big club as he is too good for Wigan

Hes a player that im surprised we werent linked with more frequently, for the right price i think he could be a great bargain but for over $12m I think we would be over paying for him. So who is the 'big club' then, Ive heard arsenal were interested in him previously but wouldnt be surprised if it was us, I dont think the board will sanction the fee for downing the villa are looking for

I thought that was our business plan: get talented mentalists on the cheap, then help them out.

Hes definitely talented but hes also got a screw loose, with certain players that works in their favour as opponents aren't quite sure what to make of them, it can be frustrating to watch as a fan because you don't know which version of the player will turn up for any given game but some managers have a knack for channelling troubled players and getting them to release their frustration through their football. Im not sure this has ever been Kennys strong point though and lets face it Carroll is already a big liability in this department, and Suarez while on his best behaviour since he arrived 6 months ago has been involved in some unsavoury episodes too, one or two unpredictable players can be good for a squad but too many volatile personalities can tip the balance and you can end up with a Newcastle style lunatics taking over the asylum scenario, fights breaking out in training etc

Hes a gamble alright but I think he could add a great element of flair to our wide play as he offers a different dimension from the 'carry the ball forward and pump the ball into the box' type winger, hes got pace trickery and I certainly dont tihnk we have seen the best of him, where as with Downing I get the feeling that he wont get any better than he is now

N'zogbia woud be a cheaper, younger and better option than Downing. I'm not worried about his personality because the good players usually are combustible. Volatile or not, he won't get away with poor behaviour at our club. Anyhow talent alone isn't enough, character plays a big part for Kenny's signings. If Kenny believes that he's got what it takes, then we'll sign him.

Damien Comolli has said that the scouts psychologically profile players before making a move (see my article here). Disruptive influences are not considered, and nor are talented ones who are a bit mentally suspect. Which is not to suggest that only saints are sought. Perhaps Andy Carroll has a few social issues that need dealing with, but he seems a hugely likable ‘team player’ rather than a troublemaker within the football club.

That would suggest N'Zogbia, Barton or anyone a bit huffy or mental won't be joining us.

I find it bizarre that our fans would like this pain in the arse average nutcase of a winger instead of downing cos he's cheaper.

Buying players like this is what got us in shit in the first place.

People just think if we're buying an average winger it's better to pay less than more.

Well he has the advantage of being the star player at a small club, which generally plays attacking football and has little in the way of expectations.

redstar-good post but Carroll could hardly be classified as a liability at this point. He's 22 and laughs a lot is all we know right now.

Not quite all we know to be fair.

1. He's got a cracking right hook
2. Loves a beer
3. Dress sense needs to be drastically improved

But, but, but, but you can get *insert name of exotic sounding player who will definitely be the worlds bestest winger ever doesn't care about CL & fucking loves perma-tanned women here* for 20m!

Haha.

Wasn't the story that N'zogbia would be the better signing because he was going really cheap?

He's also a more talented player. IMHO of course.

I don't think he'd fit in with our hypothetical pass and move football

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told Aston Villa and any other chasing clubs to stop delaying over a £10 million bid for Charles N'Zogbia, insisting he is a bargain when compared to Stewart Downing.

"The team have gone to Austria today but 'Zoggy' hasn't gone," Whelan told Sky Sports News. "He is a great lad to have around the club. If we do lose him, and we may well do because he has expressed a desire to move on, we will miss him enormously. But he is a great asset for any football club who wants him.

"I have always said for £10 million he is an absolute snip, if Stewart Downing can change hands for £20 million I don't know what Charles is worth. He is the fastest, most direct wide player in the Premier League and I have always asked for £10 million and hopefully we will get it and he will move on and be happy."

If Whelan thinks he's such a bargain then why doesn't he charge more? Even if its a clause in his contract he doesn't need to advertise the fact does he?

I saw the interview yesterday and i must admit i did find it strange, like you say though maybe it's common knowledge that he has a clause in his contract?

He also said 3 prem sides are in for him, so 1. Villa, 2. ?, 3. ?

Makes the fee we paid for Downing look even worse.

Yea but you valued Lucas at £3.75m, so what do you know? 🙂 If Nzogbia is so good, why can't Wigan give him away at £10m? Answers on a postcard.
