No loyalty these days...

Leaving a team flirting with dropping into the Championship all season, for a shot at better pay, opportunity to play with better players and perhaps even some European action will certainly be a great loss for Benteke.

They gave him the platform to perform and he repaid them by saving their season. He should be beside himself wallowing with grief at the loss of the chance to nearly play Championship football again.

That's really not the point.

He's 22 years old, he has years and years ahead of him to play European football and if he was to perform like he did last season or even better then of course he should be granted a move to a team involved in Europe.

Not fuck off after 1 season after Villa gave him his big chance.

It's not like he's some guy off the street that won a competition to play for a Premiership club now, is it?

Aston Villa paid a lot of money to get him - presumably because they thought he'd be good. He's repaid their investment by scoring lots of goals and basically kept them up. That's all he was ever there to do and beyond that he doesn't owe them anything.

Let's look at this way, if he proved to be absolutely shit and handed in a transfer request, would the club or anyone else really care? Probably not. They'd likely be happy to get him off their books.

Loyalty is rarely a two way street in football.

Former Aston Villa star Paul Merson has defended Christian Benteke’s transfer request suggesting that the situation could be a win-win situation for the club.

Benteke scored 23 goals in all competitions last season, but he rocked the club’s hierarchy when he handed in a transfer request earlier this week.

But Merson, who made over 100 appearances for Villa, believes that the club have to make a choice whether to cash in on the striker now, or to hold-out and hope he earns them more on the pitch with his performances.

“Sometimes it’s not the player, sometimes it’s the agent who will look at it and think wait there a minute, he’s got 20 odd goals, he’s been unbelievable,” Merson told Absolute Radio.

“Is he going to do that next season? I very much doubt it. Do you take the £23 million or 24, 25 - whatever it is or do you play safe and if he does stay, they will stay up and then it’s worth 100 million. That’s the big gamble Aston Villa have.”

Benteke has been linked with a move to another Premier League club, with Tottenham reported as a possible destination though Chelsea are believed to be in the hunt too.

Owner Randy Lerner has given the ok to chief executive Paul Faulkner to hold out for a fee around £25m, meaning clubs will have to part with a substantial sum of money to land the forward.

Merson also spoke on whether the Belgian would stay at Villa Park despite being unhappy.

“I don’t believe in all that unhappy player stuff. If he’s there at the start and he’s signed and the window closes, I don’t think he’s a lad who’s going to sit there and mug it off and sulk.

“I just don’t see that at all. I think if he does that other managers will then look at him for next season and think no he’s a bad egg. So I don’t see a problem. I don’t think Villa lose either way.”

Does no one else not find the comments coming out of Villa hilarious?

"We're building something special here..."

"If he doesn't want be part of it...so be it"

Special? Fucking special? I nearly split more sides, more so when it was said with a straight face. Fuck off Villa.

But they won a European cup.. Blah blah blah blah blah...

I have no recollection of Paul Merson ever playing for Villa.

He probably doesn't either.

Dean Saunders claimed Aston Villa are a bigger club than Liverpool. True story.
