Aston Villa have confirmed Christian Benteke has handed in a transfer request and the striker will be allowed to leave if a suitable offer is made 'within an appropriate timeframe'.
Benteke was a revelation for Villa last season after his £7million arrival from Genk and he scored 19 goals in the Premier League.
The Belgium international was a key figure in helping Villa to retain their top-flight status and he has subsequently been linked with a summer move.
The likes of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs who are reported to have shown an interest in the 22-year-old.
Villa have now confirmed that Benteke has asked to leave the club, but have rejected claims the powerful forward refused to travel on the pre-season trip to Germany.
A club statement read: "In response to reports that Christian Benteke has not travelled to Germany with the club and has made a transfer request, we can confirm that both are accurate.
"For clarity's sake, however, he had already been given extra time off until July 18 and was reminded that there are three years remaining on his contract.
"We consider him to be a Villa player and expect that he will be with us for the 2013-14 season.
"Having received his transfer request, we have also informed him that should we receive an offer within an appropriate timeframe during pre-season which meets our valuation we would act upon it. But he will remain a Villa player should this not happen."
Villa manager Paul Lambert has expressed his disappointment at Benteke's request, but remains hopeful that the player will stay at the club.
Lambert said: "While we're hugely disappointed that Christian has put in a transfer request, it's important that people appreciate we are trying to build something strong and vibrant here at the club, something this club demands and stands for, and we want Christian to be part of that."

We should sign him.. regardless of whether Suarez leaves or not..
I suspect though, we will make an attempt to get him when its too late...

He pulled a similar stunt to get the move to villa, so their fans shouldn't really be surprised.....

They'll make 3-4 times profit on him, he's kept them up, and he's asked for a transfer request and hasn't been mouthing off in the press trying to force a move in an under handed way, what more could they want?

I wonder what team has tapped him up then. There's plenty looking for strikers. Lambert mentions Norwich and Southampton but I'm not sure if that's in jest.

Normally you get to hear about supposed interest before a player hands in a transfer request. Interesting - I wonder who has been whispering in his agents ear.

Spurs heavily linked with him.

Would take him in a heartbeat. He's a beast, very quick too.

If Benteke wants to go, fine. Only on Villa's terms though, otherwise the substitutes bench for a season can clear the mind in WC year.

For the last time - footballers are employees, not supporters.

If your employment career was 10 years long (at best) and you had the opportunity somewhere else to earn 4 times what you're currently earning and to work alongside better people, tell me you wouldn't fucking take it.

Loyalty my arse.

I'd love for us to get him, but he would be in competition with Sturridge, Borini, and Suarez, which is a bit of a crowd. If Suarez leaves though...

I reckon Benteke is Spurs bound. Massive credit to Levy for backing AVB. Fighting to keep Bale, Paulinho, now Benteke in their sights.

There's still a chance that AVB goes to PSG though, I can certainly see PSG trying at the very least.

I agree with @Ryan. If one of us handed in our 4 weeks notice and the boss said "there's no loyalty these days" you would laugh in his face and point out that your new job is offering more holidays and is 15 minutes closer to where you live.

Liverpool could be set to make a move for Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke after the Belgian handed in a transfer request at the club.

Benteke has been a target for Liverpool throughout the summer and they could have the cash to go after him following a failed attempt to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan have also been heavily linked with the prolific Premier League striker.

These days? Remember when Ronaldo (original) had that terrible injury and was out for a year when playing for Inter? They were superb with him. He got fit and immediately joined Real Madrid. The list goes on and on. We supporters always think the club means as much to players as it does to us. It never, ever will. It's their job and they want the most money they can get and the best chance of winning things. That's all there is to it.

Unlike many before him I don't think Benteke is a one year wonder only. He looks to be rather shrewd at what he does and even with defenders giving him more attention this coming Season he could actually have got so much power and ability still to prove a handful for any defense.

If Suarez leaves, and I am quite certain he does this Summer, I would not be against having Benteke as his (quite cheap) replacement.

“I've been inundated with texts and tweets from fans wanting to know if I’ve still got the gun I intended to shoot Dwight Yorke with!”

John Gregory has sympathy with Paul Lambert over the Christian Benteke situation having endured something similar with Yorke 15 years ago.

But the former Villa boss believes Benteke’s transfer request is even worse than Yorke’s desire to leave in the summer of 1998.

While Yorke gave Villa service over almost a decade, Benteke has had his head turned and wants to quit after less than a season.

The only crumb of comfort Gregory can offer Lambert is that his Villa didn’t do too badly when they invested the proceeds from Yorke’s £12.6 million sale to Manchester United.

“It’s really quite sad and it is a kick in the teeth for Paul,” said Gregory.

“When Dwight told me he did not want to play for Villa any more, I was like: ‘Whaaaattt?!” Paul will feel the same, I’m sure.

“Someone like Christian Benteke, an ever-present virtually, saying he wants to leave smacks of somebody with no respect for the club that has turned him into one of the most exciting players in the Premier League. No respect at all.

“I think Paul will eventually take the same attitude I did when Yorkey left.

“He will say: ‘Sod him! You want to go somewhere else? Well, that’s your loss. We’re building something special here’. It will be that kind of defiance, I’m sure.

“And with the money we got for Yorkey, I went out and bought Paul Merson and Dion Dublin, who didn’t turn out too bad.

“I will say that Yorkey put in a few good years before he left; this is a guy wanting to go after one good year and that just does not sit right with me, I’m afraid.”

If Benteke wants to leave , let him go if so. Then he doesnt deserve to be part of Villa. Thats his loss , not our loss.

Leaving a team flirting with dropping into the Championship all season, for a shot at better pay, opportunity to play with better players and perhaps even some European action will certainly be a great loss for Benteke.

They gave him the platform to perform and he repaid them by saving their season. He should be beside himself wallowing with grief at the loss of the chance to nearly play Championship football again.

I'm sure Benteke isn't worth £25m, big fish in a small pond in my books. Still a good good player, just not £25m, more like £15m.
