They're both like old style centre forwards Neil.

Good in the air? TICK
Good hold up play? TICK
Workhards? TICK
Lacking genuine pace? TICK

It's not that hard to figure out, there's a difference between them two and Suarez or even N'Gog, they're too similar.

I am not sure Carroll does lack pace to be honest Mark. There was a discussion about this in the Valencia thread after he scored his goal. He looked like a fucking steam train then. He may lack it over five yards and he may look a bit lumbering due to the fact he is built like a brick shit house, but I think he does have pace.

I agree Vlad, but when he's isolated it becomes and issue, he's mobile and can be quick over the first few yards to get away from the defender, the issue is not so much Carroll himself but the teams lack of genuine pace in key positions. It's fine if there's some genuine pace elsewhere around him, but (especially away from home) when trying to hit teams on the break I can imagine us still looking a bit toothless.

On the subject of pace though, hopefully our left side is now addressed on that score with Enrique and Downing.

There was a thing in one of the papers towards the end of last season that had Carroll as our fastest player. He's hardly a whippet out of the blocks but he certainly doesn't deserve to be lumbered in with Kuyt in the speed stakes.

A 4th choice striker would most likely be a veteran entering the twilight of his career who has no international ambitions and would be happy sitting on a bench, or a young striker who is still raw and has potential but is happy to sit on the bench for experience. Not sure if Ngog falls under the 2nd category.
Agree wholeheartedly. And to clarify, N'Gog doesn't fall under the 2nd category. You only have to look at the teams above us for an idea of what's needed. Utd have the likes of Welbeck and Owen as their fourth and fifth choice strikers. Chelsea have the likes of Kalou and Sturridge. Arsenal are less well-equipped in that area but still have a very talented young striker in Vela to call upon. Tottenham still have Robbie Keane, and Citeh, well, that's just ridiculous.
I'm not particularly advocating keeping N'Gog, the point is still valid though, we need a 3rd/4th choice and letting N'Gog go and not having anything beyond Suarez/Carroll/Kuyt would be damaging should anything happen to Suarez.
I absolutely think morgan could do the job n'gog. i.e. come on in the last 5 minutes to kill time and make up the numbers in a no mark cup competition.

Kuyt/Wickham would have been a good 3rd/4th choice combination. However if we get Higuain, we would have Carroll/Suarez/Higuain/Kuyt/Morgan.

Tasty. 😉

Carroll 16/1 to be top scorer , with Torres at 8/1 and fucking Bent at 12's it looks like a decent bet. Just had a tenner anyway.

Javier Hernandez 6/1 Fernando Torres 8/1
Wayne Rooney 8/1 Sergio Aguero 8/1
Carlos Tevez 9/1 Robin Van Persie 10/1
Luis Suarez 12/1 Darren Bent 12/1
Didier Drogba 14/1 Andrew Carroll 16/1
Dimitar Berbatov 16/1 Gervinho 20/1

ha ha so much for hernandez being my 'dark horse'

I think that is wildly optimistic on Hernandez, Tevez who probably won't be here . or play, and Aguero who might struggle to settle in certainly for a few months. Torres has no chance. I am not sure Drogba is going to play enough, Bent is slightly above average in a slightly below average team. RVP always flatters to decieve, Suarez is a decent price too.
Considering we have tooled up to help Carroll it seems a very good bet.
I never mentioned Rooney did I?

5 minutes here and there isn't going to improve him very much. I think people greatly overestimate the amount youngsters improve by sitting on the bench.

Ha ha - I had my finger half way to the reply button before I noticed this right underneath your previous post !

We do have some real pace in the team now. Enrique, Downing, Suarez is above average, Gerrard, Miereles, Agger, Johnson. Plenty of pace there.

Liverpool are ready to sell striker David Ngog to Bolton – after Kenny Dalglish opened the door for his exit.

Ngog was left out of the squad at Arsenal, with the clubs closing in on a £4million-plus switch.

Boss Dalglish has decided to let Ngog leave after a chat with the Frenchman, who is fed up with his lack of chances at Anfield.

Wanderers chief Owen Coyle will try to seal the transfer quickly after his first bid was rejected. But the chance is now there to clinch the swoop for the 22-year-old.

1. We need to bring in another striker for the bench.

2. A willingness on their part to do a deal for Cahill needs to be part of this as well.

Gael Kakuta from Chelsea and Dedryck Boyata from Man City

"Any signing you make is a gamble, whether they be 18 or 34 because they come into a new club and have to get used to that environment," said the Wanderers boss.

"But I've always felt that any club I have been in charge of, it is an environment which is conducive to people coming in.

"I think all three are young, exciting players, and when you have that enthusiasm and ability when you get a chance it is up to you to go show what you can do.

"We brought them here in the belief they can make an impact - that is why they are here.

"Particularly with David, we spent money on a player who we think will grow and take the club on rather than paying a fee for someone who is 32 and whose value depreciates from the moment you sign them.

"At every club I have been at I have looked to sign young players and invest in that value and look to bring them on, and particularly so with strikers.

"If David scores goals that value will soar, and I would expect it to do because of his quality."

A nice parting gift would be him getting the winner against utd on Saturday.

Ngog raring to go against United

WANDERERS’ new £4million man David Ngog reckons he had to quit Liverpool for the good of his career.

The France Under-21 international is hoping to make his debut against Manchester United this weekend, after signing a three-year deal with the Whites on transfer deadline day.

Persistently relegated to the role of substitute in his three years at Anfield, the 22-year-old believes he can realise his potential with the promise of more first team football.

But while Ngog is eager to turn over a new page in his own career, the pacy striker insists he has no axe to grind with his former employers.

“I am at an age when I need to be on the pitch every week,” he told The Bolton News. “That’s why I came here to play games and enjoy my football.

“The last six months I haven’t played that much and this was the time to make a decision to have a new challenge to play more. I am still young, I need to improve.

“When you are at a big club like Liverpool you always expect competition. I always tried my best. But for me, the decision to leave was one I had to make.”

More than half of Ngog’s 95 Liverpool appearances came as a substitute, with Fernando Torres, and later Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll continually preferred ahead of him.

The former Paris St Germain starlet has now set his sights on proving he can be a regular starter at Premier League level.

“You have less time to show what you can do as a substitute,” he said. “But you try to change the game. It’s not always easy. But you are still part of the team.

“I did start games as well. It’s in the past now and I am just focused on Bolton.

“I always have confidence in my quality and what I am capable of doing. Now I have to produce this at Bolton and be consistent.

“I play for me, I don't play for them. I have to prove to Bolton I deserve to play here not to anyone else.”

Ngog already has a goal against United under his belt, having netted for Liverpool in a 2-0 victory at Anfield in October 2009.

“It was one of my best memories of Liverpool,” he said. “I will try to repeat that this Saturday.

“This is really exciting. You always want to play these types of games. They are a big team. They will be favourites but we will try to win.”

Doesn't mean they aren't looking at changing it round though. Anyway, hasn't Davies been playing?
