NFL Thread 2012

Yes, there is. There's always a National Championship Game, played between the teams ranked highest after all the 'normal' games, including individual conference finals, have been completed. So, there's always a champion crowned at the end of a season.

Now, the ranking of these teams is often contriversial, especially if more than two teams end up with identical record - Indeed, this season, up until a week or two ago, it looked quite liekly that three, or even four teams might have finished the season undefeated, which would have led to choas in deciding the championship game. Many who don't like the current, non-playoff based set up actually openly desire such an end of season picture, though it's not happened yet.

Yeah, there is. From 2014 there's a 4 team play off. The four big bowls will rotate as semi finals before a new title game. That's all been agreed. What hasn't been agreed is how the four teams will be selected.

It should be pointed out, for anyone unfamiliar with the system, that the "rankings" are in large part a straw poll. There are two polls which form two thirds of the weighting, and the other third is an amalgamation of six computer ranking systems.

It's more a work of art than science, but I'm a fan because FSU get continually hosed by it and that amuses me.

No matter how big a playoff college football has, the same problem will exist, there will always be a bubble team or teams that get left out.

Right now its the number 3 team, when the payoff starts it will be the number 5 team. The only solution I see is to have either 8 conferences with a certain amount of teams, and the winner of each conference goes to the playoffs.

Or have 4 conferences and the winners and runners up go to the playoffs.

Everybody else can play in the bowls.

I don't even want playoffs. The only time recently when teams got "left out" was when TCU and Boise went unbeaten as non-AQs and were paired in a BCS match. Then you had a legit unbeaten team left out at the end. But nine times out of ten it shakes down to two teams just fine. Florida were number three this year, but Georgia beat them, so they had no claim on a title game spot.

An expanded playoff would fuck with the bowls. I would rather have a tightened up bowl selection process that brings about better bowls. Also, eight teams in a playoff means three extra games. It isn't pro football. For me, determining an absolute best team isn't as important as securing the future of the programs. Bowls give them extra practice and decent revenue.

I think the rankings could do with a tweak. The coaches poll shouldn't count. Some of them this year were just blatant, coaches ranking up teams on their own schedule (Oklahoma benefited big time - they lost at home twice and were still getting top ten rankings? Behave).

There are loads of other problems to solve first anyway. The violations book needs rewriting. FBS schools skedding against shit FCS teams needs to stop - Oregon State played Nicholl State, who were 1-9 and the one was against a Div 2 side. I'd like to see more marquee inter-conference games encouraged. And we need to be able to continue laughing at Florida State.

The mental geno Smith hype train has derailed and been replaced by the even mentaler Optimus Klein hype train. Fuck these throwy fucks. Manti Te'o and Jadeveon Clowney should be the Heisman leaders. Johnny Manziel's inclusion in the discussion is madness. Damontre Moore deserves a look before Johnny Football.

Remember when I said this?

Ignore me.

He's good, The SEC has the best defences in the FBS by miles, and he tore up all the records. Scouts will wonder about his arm, but he for a quarterback known for his running, he has a decent arm too. And he's a freshman. Loads of time.

I hate Jason Garrett. He's a coward, and I cannot believe what a pathetic play caller he's been for the better part of 3 years now.

Every fan who hates the Cowboys should really hope Jerry sticks with him. We'll struggle to having a winning record with the Ginger, let alone win a playoff game.

The only reason it worked his week is because the Bengals beat themselves worse than we usually do.

Dez Byant's injury could be huge , but I don't think it will e a deal breaker either way. He is still inconsistent, and I don't trust him in big moments.

he's been phenomenal the last 5 games ... and he's maturing in front of our eyes ... when he's playing as he currently is, and not letting lack of throws destroy his focus or his concentration, he is a dominant WR. If we lose him, we have no chance to win out ... If we don't, there's still a chance.

I suppose there is a better chance with, than without, I guess I don't have much confidence either way.

He may as well sit out, and not risk permanent injury.

Tbh, I concur. I've seen enough of him to think he's on the right path to be a star. I still hope Jerry fires Garrett unless he pulls a Coughlin this year. Get Payton and give Romo a proper, confident OC to work with

10-0 to the Cowboys at the start of the 2nd quarter. I really like that James Hanna lad.

Hanna is an athlete - can flat out fly. Surprised he hasn't done more this year.

DeMarco Murray is such a stud though - if he can stay healthy, we have a pro-bowl RB for the next 10 years.

fucking 49ers giving me a heart attack . allowing brady 443 yards is ridiculous but i guess so is him throwing that much and not winning.

Nobody's going to take Sanchez. He's on over eight million guaranteed next year, and they'll have to pay $13m to cut him. I imagine Tebow's contract is easier, and someone will want some Tebow time. It's not like the Jags could get any worse.

There's not a whole lot in the draft for the Jets as far as a starter goes. Barkley? Smith? Wilson? None of them are top ten picks normally. Jets might snag one down the draft a bit unless some teams get desperately stupid.

Eh ? I meant if the Jets would try to trade for Smith or Kapaernick. Smith was an overall No 1 pick though, and it's not like he's not playing well. Interesting to see how it pans out.

Aaah sorry, I didn't pick up on the previous conversation. Thought you were asking if Kapaernick was gonna get hooked for Smith when he's back fit.

Would they go for Kapaernick or Smith?

If the 49ers dump Smith, maybe. Depends what sort of contract he'd want. There's been talk of Vick, but that sounds unlikely to me. I imagine they'll be keeping an eye on next year's draft (by which I mean the 2014 draft) with a mind to trade up. It's hard calling QBs over a year in advance, but next year's draft won't be drowning in them. Teddy Bridgewater looks like the boy right now. Logan Thomas is coming too, but VA Tech were horrible this year. Maybe they will take a risk o Barkley or Smith given next year's paucity. It's the Jets. Realistically, any type nonsense could occur.

Lions are shit again, but Megatron has still put up the best numbers ever for a WR. He'll probably hit 2000 yards ....

Dez Bryant has had a phenomenal start to the Cowboys-Saints game ... Targeted 5 times, 5 catches, 145 yards, 2 TDs ... and his playing with a hand fracture. The kid is on the cusp of stardom.
