Mbappe, Haaland, Lautaro Martinez would all cost absurd amounts of money, and I just can't see us getting any of them, Lebron and RedBird notwithstanding.

We'll probably get one of the likes of Patson Daka, Alexander Isak, Donyell Malen, Jonathan David, Pedro Neto, Raphinha.
Neto and Rahpinha are over £50m each, would you say? Inaki Williams is another option - I know he is 26 but still has serious pace

Martin Odegaard is going well at Arsenal.

May chance of hijacking that?
He'll be going back to Madrid

I heard an interview about him recently, and it was always the pan that Madrid would loan him out for a number of seasons, and they are really happy with how he is doing. They brought him back at the start of this season, as they had gaps, but then decided it was too soon, so sent him to Arse. They'll take him back at some point

It won't be easy finding a replacement for Firmino, his link up play, tactical intelligence, unselfishness, work rate and yes, his goals that have included some of the most important strikes in winning us multiple titles over the last couple of years.

So maybe we change the shape of the team instead.

It's either a more conventional mobile striker like Haaland or Kane but both are likely to be out of our financial reach or a no-striker system like City at the moment with another pacy skillful forward interplaying with our current threesome.

Hmmm

We were looking at Havertz, and I suspect that was for this role, replacing Firmino.

I think Klopp and co need to evolve the current side rather than sticking rigidly to the roles defined by existing player.

The 'Firmino' role is great when it's working along with every other cog in the system but I feel like the best approach right now is to go out and get the best player we can attract - that means goals and all round quality. No need to get too clever about it.

Surprised more teams aren't linked with Malen. If he has a good euros he'll go for 40 mil plus

Who will it be? I really think we will try to go all out for Mbappe (either this summer or next). LeBron James recently becoming a full-fledged partner with FSG might help - this is the kind of “statement signing” he would love to make and he does have pulling power because of his brand and relationship with Nike.

But needless to say, we’ll have competition - pretty much every other club on the planet. So if we cannot make this happen (and I think we don’t have much of a chance for Haaland regardless), what are some of the alternatives we should be considering?

Obviously, Patson Daka will be a name on everyone’s lips and the competition for him will be almost as fierce. Can RB Salzburg really produce 2 superstars strikers back-to-back? His numbers are great, but I’m not yet completely sold on other aspects from the limited times I’ve seen him play - but if we can’t get Mbappe he may well be the best available option. At least we’ll definitely win the AFCON this time.

Personally I’m a big fan of a Miroslav Klose/Lewandowski/Klinsmann type of striker. Those are often underappreciated because fans don’t get excited as much about a slower player - but the right kind of “big man” can be extremely valuable in the long run and often more durable than the speedsters. The young Adam Hlozek that @Pesam mentioned looks like he could be such a player - but is he too young to make an impact? The Suarez/Lautaro Martinez/Dybala type of a hard-working, creative striker without standout physical attributes can be interesting too - but it’s rare for an English club to get someone like that before the Spanish and Italian ones do.

LeBron keen to pay Mbappes £400k per week wages himself is he? That's the only way that deal is happening

The problem with the Mbappe deal wouldn't be with Mbappe's salary alone. It would also be with Salah, Mane, and Van Dijk demanding Mbappe wage parity. It's not happening - so we all need to move on from that.

Yeah, what I read about him seriously turned me off. His attitude has direct influence on why he failed in Madrid.

Makes sense ... but players with bad attitudes _can_ grow up ... if we can get him on a loan with an option to buy worth it? Or just a lost cause already?

Another name worth considering is Sevilla's young Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri who has 21 goals so far this season. Big number 9, but also very mobile and good with his feet. Potentially a Lewandowski / Harry Kane type.
