Obviously we've all seen that Alonso has come out of the woodwork and said some nice things about us.

A number of us have probably wondered if he's just saying these things or if it could possibly mean that he wouldn't mind if we came after him in the summer.

As far as I'm concerned, he shouldn't have left us if he really loves us, but maybe he figured out his real feelings through the process of it. And anyway he's an unbelievable midfielder and we're still missing him.

Would you take anyone else back?

Personally I'd have Alonso, Mascherano and Torres back in a shot if they all said things like "leaving Anfield was the worst decision I ever made".

Alonso (even if he is a cock), garcia (because I love him) and mascher (same as alonso)

How is Alonso a cock? He's a fantastic player and was treated badly by Rafa! Id have him back in a heartbeat!! Even when he gets into his thirties!!

Yeah don't get the Alonso is a cock part either.

Im think he refused to play a game around the birth of his baby, maybe that or something.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat. I loved Alonso.

He knew we didn't want him to go because we idolised him. The only reason he isn't getting the torres treatment us because he had a ready made excuse in benitez.

A masterful player who I regret dismissing when we sold him, but he left us. After we finished second.

Was ambition or loyalty the issue? I thought it was solely traceable back to a breakdown of his relationship with Rafa. I don't think it's unreasonable to cut a player slack for leaving if his relationship with the manager was untenable (for good reason).

I'd take him back in a heartbeat. Ditto Masher even if his actions are a lot far more difficult to excuse.

As far as Torres goes, I think if he came back, admitted how stupid he'd been and then went on to reproduce his first season form, much would be forgotten. That wouldn't be a good thing though. His move to Chelsea was one of the most traitorous I can think of in recent times and that doesn't deserve to be forgotten.

Would you stay in work if your boss had fucked you over and then had the opportunity to move back home for more money? Keeping in mind that most players couldn't give a fuck what we think!

And even if he did love the fans he'd still have to work with Rafa every day. I hold no grudges!!

Neither side came out of the Alonso saga well, but IMO Alonso was clearly more at fault. Rafa didn't have to be so rigid in his approach but, once he'd made his decision, Alonso - who at the time was not reaching his own highest standards anyway - acted unprofessionally in going against it, hence (for both reasons) had *no* business getting a cob on when Rafa tried to sell him. He knew Rafa, so he knew what the consequences would be. Besides, it was Rafa who ultimately, and very uncharacteristically, swallowed his pride and made it clear that the club wanted to keep Alonso after all. Rafa wasn't blameless, but the idea that he was the main culprit is piffle.

Well whatever....but I know if was treated like that originally I would (goggles off and trying to be unbiased) want out as well. Obviously in the end Rafa said he wanted to keep him because he didnt want to get screwed in the transfer fee.

Jesus......all over Gareth Fucking Barry......for that alone no one should be allowed to try and vindicate Rafa!

I'm not sure he ever refused to play, he refused to get on a flight to go to a game because of the birth - but asked for permission to follow on a later flight which Rafa refused.

I Heard it slightly different. He was told to get a second flight but didn't turn up. No idea where I heard that but I won't have any of it as it's anti Alonso crap so I'll go with your story. ha.

Alonso - defo
Arbeloa - not really that fussed either way
Masch & Torres - it would make me sick to see them in an LFC shirt again

I'd have Yossi back as well.

I know Xabi left us when he didn't have to but I can understand his actions entirely. His departure wasn't directed at the club or fans - it was solely a "screw you" to Rafa. Like JJ we all love the "commit to the club whatever the cost" attitude and I do agree that Rafa swallowed some pride. However, none of Rafa's actions were for Xabi's benefit - they were all well and truly for his own sake. Xabi leaving would bring heat on him as well as weakening his team. He got pissed off because Alonso - rightly - placed his wife and child ahead of a football game. Then he said not a word to his player while he hawked him across Europe.

As JJ says the episode did result in Xabi producing some of his best form but, while I'm sure Xabi enjoyed the success he was still deeply insulted and, I dare say, without a tenable relationship with his manager. The only way to repay Rafa's pathetic behaviour was to give him what he had sought - the transfer of one of his best players. I remain convinced that Rafa's public declarations of Xabi being welcome were, as rumoured, a complete sham.

He may have been a great tactician but Rafa's record with top players - Owen, Gerrard, Xabi, Sami, Riise, Baros, Crouch, Cisse etc was woeful. Owen, we say, just wanted out despite the claims of the player himself. Gerrard, of course, was just a miserable git who is hard to get along with. Xabi just didn't really love us despite claiming he did. Sami - well he just didn't get on with Rafa and was getting old anyway. Baros obviously wouldn't do what he was told, Crouch was poor, Cisse had a poor attitude, Riise was - I don't know but he was obviously wrong somewhere. ??? At some point you have to just say there might be something in the idea that there's a common theme running through all these episodes - Rafa. He's not there to be their father but if he wants them to perform then he has to have their trust and confidence. Clearly that level of trust was not exactly high.

I would welcome Alonso back but the other two cunts can fucking rot in their present club.

Bloody hell , I'm genuinely taken aback at some of the crap post here in regards to Alonso .

Firstly the "birth of his child" thing ...I mean is there some rule book or something in player's contracts that states that just because they earn fuck loads of money they have to sacrifice major personal and family events ? . It's not as if he's John Barnes and didn't give a shite about his 6th baby , he was a young guy having his first . How many of you would happily miss that event ? It's all well and good being sat home on your couch selfishly wanting the best for Liverpool no matter the cost but surely we have to allow players their personal lives . Even if the worst rumour is true and he refused to travel , well I still wouldn't blame him , Rafa should never have put him in that position. You'd have to be one weak ass character to just take that and say "ok i'll play , sorry young wife , you're on your own " .

And all this "if he really loved us he wouldn't have left " crap , fuck me . I mean regardless of his form he was still treated like shite by rafa , knowing that he was being offered all around Europe so that he could be replaced by Barry and even after the best form of his life he was still going to be replaced .

And have any of you ever lived abroad ? Some people are made for it , other's not and some have enjoyed their time but are just happy to move home. It doesn't matter how much money you earn , you still have to feel happy in your life . He'd been abroad for 5 years , had a young family who probably wanted to move home and he gets the chance to join Madrid who had just spent insane amounts of money building a super team . How can anyone really have a go at him for wanting to be part of that .
People need to cop on , a foreign player can play for us , understand us , love the club but still want to move for personal reason , especially if that move is home .

Oh and if we resigned Torres , he scored 45 goals and we won the league , the majority of fans would happily blank the chelsea thing from their minds.
