I'd have Yossi back as well.
I know Xabi left us when he didn't have to but I can understand his actions entirely. His departure wasn't directed at the club or fans - it was solely a "screw you" to Rafa. Like JJ we all love the "commit to the club whatever the cost" attitude and I do agree that Rafa swallowed some pride. However, none of Rafa's actions were for Xabi's benefit - they were all well and truly for his own sake. Xabi leaving would bring heat on him as well as weakening his team. He got pissed off because Alonso - rightly - placed his wife and child ahead of a football game. Then he said not a word to his player while he hawked him across Europe.
As JJ says the episode did result in Xabi producing some of his best form but, while I'm sure Xabi enjoyed the success he was still deeply insulted and, I dare say, without a tenable relationship with his manager. The only way to repay Rafa's pathetic behaviour was to give him what he had sought - the transfer of one of his best players. I remain convinced that Rafa's public declarations of Xabi being welcome were, as rumoured, a complete sham.
He may have been a great tactician but Rafa's record with top players - Owen, Gerrard, Xabi, Sami, Riise, Baros, Crouch, Cisse etc was woeful. Owen, we say, just wanted out despite the claims of the player himself. Gerrard, of course, was just a miserable git who is hard to get along with. Xabi just didn't really love us despite claiming he did. Sami - well he just didn't get on with Rafa and was getting old anyway. Baros obviously wouldn't do what he was told, Crouch was poor, Cisse had a poor attitude, Riise was - I don't know but he was obviously wrong somewhere. ??? At some point you have to just say there might be something in the idea that there's a common theme running through all these episodes - Rafa. He's not there to be their father but if he wants them to perform then he has to have their trust and confidence. Clearly that level of trust was not exactly high.

This is a fantastic post by the way.
