I think some were/are swayed by the fact Klopp signed him (when his Godlike infallibility was still a thing), plus he fits that 'cultured, ball-playing' central defender stereotype that has a certain type of fan jizzing in their bills - you know the sort, talking about transitions and high pressing and death by football, and don't like players who are actually boss defenders like Jamie Carragher

So like Daniel Agger was a bit like a Lidl version of Alan Hansen, Matip is a shit version of Daniel Agger

He's slow as fuck, can't head a ball straight, and is a total pussy in the challenge

Fucking useless
He also has the build of a C3PO which is far more suited as any fule kno to the holding midfield role

Not sure if you are praising or critisizing Agger there. I would love any version of Alan Hansen in the squad.

The part where he starts arguing with himself is simply glorious.

He never should have diversified from talking nonstop about attacking fullbacks and veered into the cutthroat arena of describing a successful holding midfielder. That was the end of Spider Neil, which was a shame. But what a way to go!

I'm bumping this thread so that the people who think he's great can have a word with themselves.
He looks good when we're dominating games and he's playing past the halfway line. As soon as he has to do any defending, he's fucking bollocks.

If he's got any clear flesh left, the hebetudinous midget should get some more tattoos done, with handy advice such as 'Don't try to push opponents over when you're standing behind them,' 'Don't trip people up in the penalty area' and, most important of all, 'Go away and don't come back'.

His football intelligence level is not very high. Poor decision making.
It's a pity because he has the potential.

While I agree with that, I wonder - as I have for almost all the time he's been with us - whether he ought to be playing fullback at all. Seems to me he'd be better used as a wide MF/attacking option who occasionally drops back when his team's under pressure.

The same argument used to be made about Glen Johnson as a way of absolving him of his defensive responsibilities. Poor decision-making applies across the pitch. It may not hurt us in the same way if it happens further up the pitch but it would still contribute to crap stuff happening. Moreno has demonstrated that he crumbles under pressure and despite any improvements in discipline his mentality is as questionable as it has ever been. I can understand the argument for mitigating that in terms of moving his position but that lack of a high enough standard in terms of mentality should mean he's not able to get in the squad. Same for all the other members of our team who can't seem to be composed under pressure or take responsibility when the pressure is on.

I dunno. Hes been consistently good this season.

Last night he had a mad 10 minutes, funnily enough against his old side, who he also had a shocke playing against 18 months in the EL final.

Back on the horse..

I cant remember any games this season where he's been a standout defender and been very good at defending when we've been under pressure. He looks good when we're attacking.

Yea, I am not sure if he has been consistently good or just not found out this season.
Probably a mixture of both.
I do know that I have been yelling at the telly during several matches for him to get back in position because he had been dragged in field watching the ball.

He still hasn't learnt English. He still can't talk in very basic English. I know it can be difficult when you move to another country, but this fool has had pretty much a season of inaction during which he could at least have made himself a bit more familiar with the culture in which he lives. I wonder if he just struggles to learn anything. Like defending.

I never shared the view that Magic should be moved forward, but that was because I'd seen him tried there at other clubs and it never worked. As long as Moreno is still on the books I'd still prefer to see us use him - if at all - further up the pitch.

A lot of good points in your post though. Last night Moreno cast a shadow over the progress he seemed to have been making this season. I've tended to stand up for him so far, but he's definitely in the Last Chance Saloon - at best - now.

Will be interesting to see Robertson (or Milner) on Saturday vs Chelsea. Absolutely no way that Alberto will start that game.

Agree. Important choice too, as whoever plays there will presumably be up against Willian and that'd be a tester for most LBs.

“We threw away three points,” Moreno told Onda Cero.
“We were already through to the next round, but it was not to be.”
“We knew that even with a 3-0 advantage it was going to be complicated, and that was the case. We had spoken at half-time about how with a 3-0 lead we still had to be careful.”
“More than that [Sevilla playing well], it was a case of how awful we were and how many mistakes we made at the back.”
“They didn’t stop attacking in the second half – but we came out half asleep.”

Nice use of the 'we', dimwit.

I'm hoping he gets a mysterious injury and can't play, much like Lovren when had one of his howlers

What a dickhead

I'm not 100, but yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Nor would I.

Klopp clearly favours attacking strength over defensive ability, & as much as I hate Moreno at times, you'd have to be blind not to see that his pace helps our counter, & it practically rules out their own wing back or full back for large periods of the match.

I don't think he'd play him regardless of the opposition, but against Chelsea I can see why he'd want his pace, I just don't agree that the danger of that pace outweighs his almost inevitable brain farts.

Its klopp fault for putting a fucking midget front post , what on earth is Moreno doing be the first man to attack the ball? Hes what 5'5 and is hardly known for his ability tl head the ball or judge a ball in the air.

All Moreno had to do in this case was to move towards the ball as it came in and he would have won it.
It was his lack of movement rather that his height which allowed Ben Yedder to run in head of him and score.
I would have thought that all decent defenders would by default try and attack the ball where possible, and in this case it was eminently possible.
The lack of height in our team does in my opinion impact our ability to defend set pieces and is probably worth a discussion elsewhere

Nah im sorry, theres fundamentals at set pieces that transcend every level of football. Any old cunts can defend a set piece well if properly drilled.
