Ayre defends Reds transfer policy

New commercial deal announced as managing director says club won't pay over the odds

Harry James Kandou (Deputy Chief of Mission Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia), Brendan Rodgers, Emirsyah Satar(President and CEO Garuda International) and Ian Ayre
Liverpool FC managing director Ian Ayre defended the club’s transfer policy following the announcement of another lucrative commercial deal at Anfield.
Garuda Indonesia will be the Reds’ first official training kit sponsor after penning a two-season agreement which starts in June.
They were already Liverpool’s official airline partner and the increased profile will take the total value of the sponsorship to around £16million per year.
It has been a successful month for the Reds off the pitch with profitable deals also being struck with Dunkin’ Donuts and Vauxhall but fans are still waiting to see the first new signing of the January window.
Liverpool missed out on top target Mohamed Salah who opted for a move to Chelsea after the Reds failed to agree a fee with Basel. Ayre insists the club do have the cash to strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ squad but says they won’t pay over the odds.
“We haven’t been held back from completing a deal, the player (Salah) has decided he doesn’t want to come to Liverpool,” Ayre said. “We will always compete and know the value of a player and how far we are prepared to go.
“That is something myself, Brendan and others involved in that discuss regularly. We won’t over pay but when the right player is available and wants to be at Liverpool they will be here and our success previously shows that.
“There is no one not here because we didn’t do what we needed to do. There has been no lack of ambition or effort on our part. We will win some and lose some, that is the case in every transfer window.”
The Reds have an estimated 65 million fans in Indonesia and the deal with Garuda will further raise their profile across Asia.
“I am not talking about the value but it is competitive and a very large contribution to our commercial revenue,” Ayre added.
“It really isn’t just about the money. It’s about how many people that sponsorship reaches and how it develops the club in other areas of the world.
“Having a global airline partner which flies to 60 destinations across the world with our brand alongside theirs – that’s where the value is.
“In terms of commercial achievements we are right at the top of that league. The club is in a very good place.
“For those of us with good memories we know we had nearly £300million of debt three and a bit years ago and we’ve worked hard to chip away at that. The club is sustainable and in a good position to invest in the transfer market.”

How do you calculate how much another player is worth? If we say player x is worth 5mill, but the selling club has 10 other clubs interested at 10mill, then surely we've got our numbers wrong?
And based on the transfers of Allen, Borini, Carroll, Aspas and Alberto, I don't have a lot of faith of how they're coming up with their numbers.

I wonder how involved with the money side of things Brendan is? Surely he must be to an extent, otherwise he'd be telling Ayre to go and sign him the best players in the world.

Translation:
There is ambition.
There is effort.

There is no money.

So why does Ayre, Henry and Werner say the money is there, it even says in the article 'Ayre insists the club do have the cash to strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ squad', not that i believe a word he says, we were going to pay near on 28 mill for Willian wern't we? look at all these sponsorship deals and theres no money?

Rodgers contradicted a few of his points in his presser and I read last night that apparantly Henry isnt to impressed with how we fail to get our targets.
Salahs agent said we just spent to much time negotiating, 2 1/2 months... Which is insane.

It is, Salah must of wanted to come otherwise we wouldn't of spent that much time and effort on it, we blew it by fucking around over a couple of million again.

I'm not sure why everyone's getting all uppity at Ayre, Brodge or FSG.

We're quite clearly paying for the fucking money wasting debacle that was Dalglish's tenure. If you wax 55M on 2 useless cunts then it stands to reason you're gonna pay for it at some stage.

And this is it.

Always thought Kennys tenure had put the club back years but Rodgers has done a great job rectifying that mess to get us where we are right now.

FSG should be going all out to help Rodgers achieve what everyone involved with the club wants, maybe im missing something but why wouldn't they? even if it means spending some of the summer budget, to be honest we don't even need to spend that much, we wouldn't exactly have to break the bank for M'Vila and/or Reges, we didn't have to break the bank for Salah either.

There is, sadly, truth in this. It's not an unreasonable plan for a new owner to adopt - spend very big in the first season with the hope that that propels you to a top four place, with all the associated revenue, and then be able to comfortably spend £30 million odd each year that can keep you in the top four and maybe help you start pushing for the title.

Well, firstly Rodgers has wasted money himself so there may be some reluctance to throw more money at him. Secondly, the capability to "go all out" might just not be there.

However you try and explain it though, the situation sucks.

I'm not defending the policy but if the player doesn't actually want to come and wants to sit on Chelsea's bench then what can we actually do?
Rodger's seem to say in the interview, we tried everything and looks like he just preferred Chelsea. Maybe he negotiated and delayed negotiations because he was waiting for Chelsea?
I just dont know and to be honest a bit meh about the Willan and Salah anyway.
It's easy to be frustrated about the whole thing but just a month ago, we were all saying how quickly we sorted out the new Suarez without any delay so was that a different negotiation team to this one?
I'm frustrated too but rather get the right player, got enough rushed transfers and we do have a brilliant group of youth so personally don't mind.

He did, and we are, but, Rodgers has spent 100mill so far......

You'd think for that we'd have some more to show for the first team apart from Sturridge and a blow hot and cold Coutinho/Mignolet.

Just excuses though ain't it, there is no valid excuse for this situation, hopefully we do end up signing a couple of players that can help and most of this means nothing.

Not fuck around wasting our time scouting him for 3 months and negiotiating with Basle/Agent?

Spend time and effort on other players.

Funny how some people regard the past as utterly irrelevant and a sign of creeping senility except for when it suits them.

It's admirable that the club is trying to do things in the right way, but it clearly also needs to do so with less naivete. It's also been evident for ages now that Ayre is an excellent commercial executive but he isn't a football man - just look back at the absolute shambles he made of his time at Huddersfield Town. You'll look far and wide to find anyone associated with that club who has a good thing to say about his abilities in the football aspect of the management of a club. And the fans are damning:

He needs moving to an exclusively commercial role and someone genuinely competent needs bringing in, pronto.

I don't think there's a lack of effort, it's more the efforts are fruitless and lack efficiency at times.

Sort of agree with that but it still doesn't really wash, the way i look at it if we were putting in a proper effort and had any real ambition our shit would of been sorted by now for this window and none of this faffing around would be happening, wheres the back up option for Salah if Rodgers really wants an attacking player? Salah or bust by the looks of it, thats a lack of effort and just plain old complacency (again) not having a back up option.

I'm sure they had at least one back up option. They're clearly not doing at all well at getting him, though.

I can only presume he has a hold on FSG akin to that of Marcia Falkender over Harold Wilson.
FSG dont give a damn about Ayre and shit...Henry is apparentls very calm but equally ruthless and Wener is also a brilliant man, so I think if they get tired of Ayre, he will be off soon.
