Moores speaks out

"There was still the very real business of obtaining approval of the shareholders, however. I was the 51% majority stakeholder, but I was obliged to -and I wanted to - obtain a mandate from Liverpool’s shareholders great and small. Gillett and Hicks produced a very substantial offer document containing all the key assurances re debt, the stadium, investment in the squad and respect for Liverpool F.C’s unique culture, traditions and legacy. It was impressive stuff - and it did the trick. For the motion to be carried we needed around 90% in favour. Over 1700 shareholders voted and the result was 100% in favour of accepting Gillett & Hicks’s offer."

I read this that Moores could not make the decision on his own, despiet being the major shareholder , and clearly it says that the decision was 100% unanimous . That being the case why is Steve Morgan today spouting on about Moores making the wrong decision , when he was one of the bigger shareholders and presumably voted in favour.
How many shares did Morgan have and/or control?

I think nearly everyone is acting with the benefit of hindsight on this one

I agree with StevieM.

Moores is a nice man from what I can gather and he was in an awful position in 2006/2007.

But the fact remains that he delivered the club into the hands of a pair of carpetbaggers.

Not altogether. Morgan has always considered Moores incompetent and reckoned he should have gone years ago. I suspect he thinks the letter glosses over some serious misjudgements by Moores throughout his tenure, not just at the end of it. I'm no fan of Morgan but IMO the sad fact is that he has a point in both respects. Even Moores admits in the letter to having made mistakes, but he avoids specifying what they were, and the idea that he has no need to apologise because those mistakes were well-intentioned is a load of hooey.

Morgan was on the radio today on the BBC news alluding to Moores error in allowing the sale to the Americans....
He has not denied this though

"Significant shareholders like Granada and Steve Morgan were insistent the board of LFC should accept the G&H offer, and left me in no doubt about my legal duty to accept the offer."

As far as Morgan goes his opinion is zero as he hardly comes from a neutral position on this insofar as he had been trying to gain control for years, I was at the last few shareholders meetings and Morgan was cringeworthy in some of the stuff he spouted

I don't doubt that, Vlad. The man is a glorified barrow-boy, I repeat that I'm no fan of his and it's characteristic of him to want to kick a man when he's down. All that said and acknowledged, I'm afraid I maintain that he was right about Moores overall.

I'm pretty sure I posted about this a few times in the past couple of years in some long boring posts that nobody read.

Minority shareholders have a nuclear option available to them if the board is acting in a manner that's not beneficial to their interests. The club can actually be wound up in certain circumstanced.

Nice words from Moores there and brendan is spot on there is no need for abuse toward him.

Sadly the chances of the current owners standing aside and being honorable are slim to none. A few weeks back i suggested that RBS sort out the sale and the price themselves.... lets hope this talk of impatience from them means they do just that.
[/quote]

At the end of the day, as nice a man as Moores is, he ultimately made the decision to sell to G&H.

So, while I truly believe his intentions were nothing but, in his own mind, good for the club he made a f**kin terrible decision - hindsight and all.

Saying he doesn't deserve "criticism" is a bit like saying Benitez deserves no criticism for selling Alonso and thinking Lucas could simply replace him, just because Benitez thought it woud be fine and he's a nice chap and took us to "No. 5".

Don't let Brendan's superiority complex get in the way.

Spot on.

Is it? I could have told you at the start of last season that Lucas wasn't up to replacing Alonso, it was bleedin obvious. There's still a difference between a mistake and a fuck up.

I don't think Moores owes any LFC fan an apology. He was a fantastic Chairman in, as he admits, a footballing environment that doesn't exist any more. Let's not forget, once Chelsea had Abramovich and similar others were looking for clubs, most of our fans couldn't wait for Moores to sell out to the first billionaire through the gates. And the longer we went without a new benefactor, the louder the fervour became. Interesting to read that 1700 shareholders inc the since critically outspoken Morgan backed the deal. The fact that we have ended up with G&H and that they have not delivered on pre-purchase promises is not Moores' fault.

I was agreeing with the "Brendan's superiority complex" bit mostly, to be honest.

Getting lectured on how to be a respectful Liverpool fan from him is a touch rich.

Ah. Fair enough.

Of course it is. There was never any call for the insults which some aimed at Moores, but equally he was never up to the job and that has cost the club dear.
