Martin O'Neill is a good manager imo, it's just too bad that Ireland hasn't produced any good players for the last maybe 10 years. Except Seamus Coleman maybe.

That's the crux of it really.
We aren't producing players anymore and there's a wide range of factors for that. GAA has always been more popular at youth level, but i suspect rugby is there now too. So a lot of players are being taken away from soccer at an early age.

The FAI don't fund the youth game to any degree in the country either - you only have to compare the facilities that any local soccer club has to those of the local GAA or rugby team. Even the top level Irish soccer clubs don't have the facilities or infrastructure that compares with those available to a 3rd division rugby team. It's just night and day and the problem starts at the top of the FAI.

Our main hope in soccer now probably rests with the Nigerian influx we had in the late 90's early 00's. Those kids, like Obafemi at Southampton, seem likely to make an impact on Irish sport soon. Unfortunately since they were all born in Ireland their birth certs are legit so we haven't won any youth tournaments

Soccer?!

Calling football soccer is an unfortunate reality when you live in Ireland. I hate it, but have to go along with it

I actually really like him and for me he has played as well as you could have expected last season. I was so happy for him when he scored his first goal in that last game of the season. His got bags of potential and to be honest I think his participation in the team last season was hampered by confidence issues and also I don't buy into the idea that he had a decent run in the side. I don't consider being played as a sub here or there for 40 or 30 minutes as adequate to develop properly and fit into a team. Remember what we had to do with Crouch ? - he also offers something different with this height. I remember when he played for England's first team last season - I thought for the few minutes he played he actually linked up the play really well.

If we sell Origi - it will be good for him (Dom), and I was a big fan of Origi in Klopp's first season and it is such a big shame that injury in the derby game that season seemed to knock his confidence for six.

Honestly, I rarely bother reading moron posts.
Naturally I though meh moron post on MON thread bovvd about that then I read 'I actually really like him' so I read on completely confused.

As I imagine moron was when he posted, to be fair Dom and MON are kinda the same ish

LOL - sorry everyone - this was supposed to be in the other thread on Dom. I lost the plot with laughter after seeing the picture of that C4 twitter post of father Ted.

Fat Sam's presentation: "Der's More To De Ireland Job Dan Dis" is going to be fucking awesome.

If using generic presentation tools like PowerPoint impressed the English FA, can you imagine how it will go down with the Irish FA?
If he converts it to Keynote and adds in a few animated slides it will be like witchcraft!

The biggest problem for Irish football in the last 2 decades is that the talent has dried up. No manager is going to change that. In previous eras most decent Irish players went to English clubs as teenagers and developed in their youth systems so Ireland was never reliant upon developing its own players as the English clubs did it for us. Now with so many 'foreign' players in the premier league there are fewer and fewer places for going Irish talent to get first team football, the same has happened to a certain extent with Scotland.

The only real option seems to be investment at grassroots level domestically, building some interest in the domestic league and trying to develop our own players. The best young kids will always go to England, thats fine, but there has to be a wider network than that.

I dont see rugby ever becoming the dominant sport in Ireland, despite tge recent success. Culturally its still seen as an elitist sport tied to a small number of private schools, and the increasing awareness of the consussion injuries suffered by underage players is going to put more and more people off.
