Martin O’Neill has left his job as Republic of Ireland manager by mutual agreement. His coaching staff, including Roy Keane, have also departed.

O’Neill has gone after the team finished bottom of their Nations League group, his final match being a goalless draw in Denmark this week in which Ireland did not have a shot on target.

The former Leicester and Celtic manager took the post in November 2013 and led Ireland to the last 16 of Euro 2016. O’Neill departs amid growing disillusionment among fans, the side having gone 397 minutes without a goal and having won only one of their nine games in 2018.

The Football Association of Ireland’s chief executive, John Delaney, said: “I would like to thank Martin, Roy, and the management team for the impact that they had with the Ireland team. There have been many highlights during Martin’s reign – none more so than Euro 2016 in France, which will live long in the memory of all Irish supporters.”

Ireland reached the play-offs for the 2018 World Cup but lost 5-1 to Denmark.

It's a shame, I remember when Ireland used to be good, when all those famous Irishmen such as John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Mick McCarthy, Paul McGrath, Tony Cascarino, Andy Townswend, Chirs Hughton and Chris Morris had that great world cup. Back when The FAI stood for Find An Irishman.

Why does that not happen as much? Or does it? I may be wrong, but have they tightened up the rules or something? Or is there just less, good-not-great, players out there who could play for Ireland, but choose not to?

It's relatively simple to walk into an England team these days, so there's no need to look further afield for caps.

We seem to have abandoned trying to develop players and instead are trying to find players playing in England at any level that might somehow qualify for Ireland.

We need to sort out the FAI and work on a grassroots level before we'll ever be decent again.

Picture the scene. Spain. The Costa del Sol. A small but well-positioned apartment, looking out on the beach. Inside, a woman has just popped open the Blue Nun and is removing a family pack of spag bol from the freezer, when she looks around and sees her rather large husband squeezing into some green golfing trousers, a green sweater and a green party hat.

'Sam?'
'Yes, luv?'
'What are you doing?'
'Just going out for a bit, luv'.
'Dressed like that?'
'I've always liked green, luv'.
'Oh my god, you want the Ireland job, don't you?'

Fat Seamus is born!

Mick McCarthy is favourite, appaz. Stephen Kenny is next (I have no idea who he is)

Then we have the usual runners and riders: Fat Seamus, Sven Begorrah Erikssen, Lee "Lee" Carsley, and some other cunts.

Not even a mention of Alan Pardew!

Stephen Kenny is manager of my local league of Ireland side, Dundalk. Double winners this season. Great manager at that level.

Can't even hire a plastic Paddy now as that's bad for the environment.

Martin O'Neill is a good manager imo, it's just too bad that Ireland hasn't produced any good players for the last maybe 10 years. Except Seamus Coleman maybe.

Shane Long has 82 caps for Ireland. And 17 goals.

I'm actually amazed he's scored that many.

Where's the next Paul McGrath, Mark Lawrenson or John Aldridge coming through?!

Good question. Are Irish people still moving to England?

I think the 1840s was the peak of Irish immigration to the UK. Can't remember why. The weather or something.

But that whole "Irish Granny" thing surely isn't markedly different compared to the 80s and 90s, and given there's more than 1 in 10 people in the UK with Irish grandparents, how come Shane Long is still getting a game?

As I said earlier, has there been a crackdown on it, or an attempt by the FAI to have more "proper" Irishmen in the team like that poppy-burning fenian McClean

He was a good manager. He's a fucking dinosaur now. Although the problems in football in Ireland run far deeper than just the current first team. The FAI is a fucking joke, run by a complete spoofer.

Had no idea about your FA

Back in the 80s/90s some players were scouted before it was recognised how good they were. Aldridge would definitely have been good enough to play a few games for England, but he'd had his Irish cap before even signing for Liverpool. I think playing for Ireland was far more attractive back then too but the Irish born players were of a far better standard than they are now.

I've read somewhere that his wages are comparable to the prize fund for the league. Which highlights part of the problem.

Yeah, but most developing countries don't have lucrative domestic leagues, and their best players just go to France, Portugal, Germany or Spain but that doesn't stop plenty of them playing for their country of origin, look at Mane (Senegal), Drogba (Ivory Coast), Salah (Egypt).

And of course the likes of Whelan, who we signed from Home Farm when he was a teenager.

And it's not just about size.

Croatia's tiny, but has loads of good players. Brazil is huge, but none of their players spent much time playing in the Copacabana league or whatever the fuck it's called.

John Delaney was looking out of his office window when he noticed an elderly lady struggling with a large number of shopping bags. He opened the window and shouted out to her.
"Can you manage love"
"Fuck off" she replied. "I don't want the job"

"Soccer" is not the main sport here either.

OK so we can all agree that the Irish national team isn't that great atm, but what in your opinion was the best team you've ever had?
94 team? Keane era?
