What does next season hold for Mr Dependable?

He came here to escape the squad filler role and play in midfield only to find himself at LB (though he can take some comfort that he remains one of the first names on the teamsheet).

I'm guessing we'll sign a new LB in the summer and I'm not sure Klopp sees him as a permanent fixture in midfield.

Where does that leave him? Potentially a rotated squad filler again?

It's hard to say. I think even if we do buy a left back, unless it's someone established of out and out quality, rather than a rising player, then they will have to bide their time to oust him anyway. He's good cover for both flanks, as well as the wide areas of midfield and central midfield, but as you say, he's a likely to be a utility player (again), rather than having a designated role.

He's a great player though either way and massively important to us.

He's also the type of player that will relish any fight for the LB spot that might be on the cards for next season.
Moreno hasnt featured at all and it doesnt look like Klopp trusts him anymore to start as a left back.

Getting in a new player that can compete with Milner will only be a good thing for the team. Milner is extremely important though and will probably play loads of games next season aswell.

I'd actually prefer to have him as right back instead of Clyne, who frustrates me like hell. That is if we get a great left back.

It's an interesting discussion, and I can't really give any definitive answer. If the idea is to buy Sessegnon, then I would assume that leaves Milner still our first-choice LB, with the younger talent as support and occasional rotation option, with a view to taking the LB position for his own maybe the season after.

Of course, he is still capable in CM, but either way, he's been one of our best signings of recent years, and his value to the team is obvious with his consistent level of performance and overall quality.

A model professional and capable of filling in just about anywhere on the pitch.

I hope a top quality LB is top priority as much as Milner has been excellent there this season.

I guessed he gets a run of games in any position centrally and shows the consistent quality he has at LB, then he'll be hard to dislodge.

I guess the obvious follow on question is - is there a danger he'll want to leave?

Oh, I forgot to address that bit.

You're dead right that being a regular starter in his "preferred position" was a key motivational factor in wanting to leave City, but it was also partly about the regular tendency of various managers there leaving him out of big games - in any position.

That has certainly not been the case at Anfield, so I suppose it depends on his tolerance for playing LB. He hasn't ever complained, but then Milner isn't a complainer.

If he was a couple of years older then an up and coming Leeds might have appealed to him, but here and now, he's surely still too good to want to move to a middling Premier League team, and I doubt any of the other teams around us would take him, given his age and wages. So I'd be surprised if he wants to leave, but he'll be entitled to a bit of reassurance as to his role(s) next season.

What about Trent AA?
On a side note, I saw a pick of the squad celebrating the West brom win in the dressing room afterwards.

TAA looked huge for an 18 year old. His physique is incredible, years beyond most 18 year olds.

He'll be looking to push into regular first team action next season for sure.

This has got "disciplinary procedure" written all over it.

This is a shoo-in for 'Homoerotic post of the year' in the 6CM's Seasonal Awards.

For me, it's basically the same situation as Mignolet. Obviously Milner is more consistent a less error prone but in an ideal world we should be looking for a better, more natural fullback.
But like the situation with Mignolet, we have other priorities.
The DM position needs to be sorted imo.
We need an attacking winger.
I'd love for us to buy an attacking midfielder as well.

He will keep his place next season. Lojal, experienced, leader and contribute both ways. Klopp wants fullbacks that can attack and he fits the bill for whats needed. Er can't defend anyway so no worries there...

I'd like to see a proper left back come in, and for me, I'd put him above Can/Henderson/Lucas in the midfield, but I suspect Klopp would be looking to buy for there too.

He'll still be our first choice left back, and that kid from Fulham will be back up.
I wouldon't be too unhappy with that to be honest. We have other priorities.

Getting a top quality goalkeeper should be one of our highest priorities. Milner has been consistently good. We can't say that about mignolet. A goalkeeper, DM, winger and striker should be our priorities.

Gomez looked a competent left back for the few game he played there before his injury. Maybe he can step in for Milner.

Moreno will leave and I reckon a young LB will be signed to compete for the position. It's important to get Milner into the side wherever. He's pretty much Captain with the amount of games Henderson misses and this squad needa leadership.

I hope we buy a better left-back, cos he's not great there. Solid, dependable, and the complete professional - but we need a left-back.

If we get a great one, Milner won't be getting in the side cos he's not good enough for midfield. If we dont't, then he'll play quite a bit I imagine.
