Benitez has a point about all the changes made. Changing the personnel in almost every department as well as dealing with financial difficulties is a lot to cope with.

Pulling the head off it with your head in a bucket of solvents, a posh asphyxiwank. I like that idea.

Agree with this.

I'd also like it if he didnt keep blaming everybody else for everything.

It wasnt all his fault, but some of it was.
Perhaps if the press stopped asking him and goading him about it he would? In fairness as you say, its some of his fault but the press love a scapegoat and seem to be enjoying it.

Also, is Rafa trying to shrug off reponsibility for signing the likes of Dossena, Jovanovic and Aquilani? I'm pretty sure those weren't Purslow's decisions.

I guess it's an old saying, just like pots and kettles are not always black either

Did he not blame Valencia's top dogs for him leaving there too?

"So, what changed?

"The managing director is involved in all the decisions: new lawyer, new chief of press, new manager, nine new players, new medical staff, new fitness coaches - they changed everything.
That seems like Rafa's suggesting he had no say in the transfers, but I thought that his new contract was based upon him having ultimate say?

Curious . . .

sounds more like a suggestion that purslow had a say in many areas outside of his area of expertise, of which one was transfers. It might be a lie, but if it's true I've got to say I think it's a big problem. Purslow is an investment banker. He was brought in to sell the club because of his financial contacts. He shouldn't really have anything to do with the football side of things. As proved by the managerial appointment he has overseen, overruling Daglish to do so.

That was more believable, seeing as he just won the league and Uefa Cup with them and still wanted to leave.
In this instance though, he's deluded if he thinks he can put all the blame on everyone but himself.

Brendanj's old thread about the similarities between Houllier and Benitez was something I thought he was way off on, but now I truly see it.

All good managers can suffer from delusional arrogance from time to time.

It's often why they are so good, but there's no doubt it's a double-edge sword.

Purslow had to have some say over transfers, in the sense that in order to service the club's overwhelming debt, all transfer policy had to fit into a really constrained budget which was dictated to him. The fact that this was a significant part of Purslow being at the club makes it almost tautological to say that when he was here the situation changed. That's WHY he was here.

We'll never know how much of a point Rafa has, but I think we all agree it's safe to say he shoulders a lot of blame as well. I'm not so sure that Purslow said, "it's hard times, go out and spend 18M on a crocked playmaker, and a left back"

Gah, the whole thing doesn't bear thinking about. When Rafa came second I said it'd be a tragedy if he wasn't allowed to build on it, that failure to build on it would cause us to go backwards, and I just can't fathom how far backwards we've gone. The primary cause remains H&G but once we started slipping, Benitez and to a greater extent now Hodgson, have been fairly clueless about how to dig in.

Well, there's not a lot in that to disagree with. Hopefully, the reason for not giving Kenny the job in the first place was so that he could be in charge of the footballing decisions instead.

Although having said that, after himself being rejected for the position, didn't Kenny back Hodgson?

I dunno . . . we should have brought Kenny in in the first place, and we should bring him in now if you ask me, but if he's not installed as manager then he should be in charge of making the football decisions - even if he did cock up re Roy

Every comment I've seen from Kenny leads me to believe he'd make an excellent diplomat. He has far too much dignity, and respect for the club and a fellow manager to openly criticise a decision (which had probably already been made to be honest.) even when it meant he might end up with egg on his face in the 21st century world of Internet forums where every word put on the record can come back to haunt you 🙂

I am sure either Purslow or Broughton was quoted as saying that they preferred Kenny to have a longer term position than manager [not the exact words] which at that time made me think it was because Hodgson was seen as very much a short term appointment.

The main question I would ask is, who was responsible for the signing of Aquilani?

Rafa has to take the blame there, and that was the catalyst for our downfall.

u deserve hodgson

He says that it was everybody else's fault we're shit.

If it were his fault, then as soon as he left we'd be in better shape.

Since we're still shit (or wose shit) that means he was right and it wasnt his fault we're shit.

I call it The RAWK Theorem.

I wonder how many of Rafas bad signings Ged would like to take credit for?
