MILK TURNS SOUR AS BENITEZ TALKS

Rafael Benitez has launched a cryptic attack on Liverpool's ousted owners and current managing director Christian Purslow.

Benitez, whose six-year reign as manager ended in the summer, hit out at former co-owner Tom Hicks' claim that he was largely to blame for the Reds' worst ever start to the Barclays Premier League this season.

Hicks pointed the finger at Benitez for wasting much of the money he was given to spend during the latter half of his tenure.

But a clearly irked Benitez insisted the Americans were to blame, citing their of appointment Purslow in the summer of last year as the beginning of a downward spiral that ended in the Spaniard's exit.

In an outburst reminiscent of Eric Cantona's famous quote featuring seagulls and trawlers, Inter Milan boss Benitez compared events leading up to his departure to a bottle of milk.

"I prefer not to talk too much about Liverpool," said Benitez, who watched his former club's Merseyside derby defeat on Sunday which left them second bottom of the table.

"I prefer not to talk about this because I feel really sorry for the fans.

"I was watching the fans and I was really sad after the defeat the other day.

"We have a saying in Spanish, which is: 'White liquid in a bottle has to be milk'."

Benitez, who led Liverpool to second place in the Premier League in 2009 but could only manage seventh last term, added: "What does this mean? It means that after 86 points and finishing second in the league, what changed?

"The Americans, they chose a new managing director and everything changed.

"So, what changed?

"The managing director is involved in all the decisions: new lawyer, new chief of press, new manager, nine new players, new medical staff, new fitness coaches - they changed everything.

"At the beginning, they changed the managing director who was talking with some players, and they changed everything that we were doing in the past.

"So, if you want to ask again what was going on, it's simple: they changed something and, at the end, they changed everything.

"So, white liquid in a bottle: milk. You will know who is to blame."

Pressed further on the matter, Benitez would only say: "White liquid in a bottle. If I see John the milkman in the Wirral, where I was living, with this bottle, I'd say, 'It's milk, sure'."

Well it's easy to try to shift blame after the fact, and that's what Benitiez appears to be doing here.
BUT he obviously does have a grievance with Purslow, so maybe the Pursssssslow, jibes have something to them.

We're all happy with the boardroom battle being won and Purslow, Broughton etc have done well here.

However we can expect them to be good at cut throat boardroom battles - they come from the corporate world where this behaviour is an asset.

Perhaps not the sort of people you would trust or want as friends depending on your outlook on life....

I guess where I'm going is that I would trust Benitez over Purslow 100% on FOOTBALLING decisions.

Has he been making too many of those decisions?

Seems to be a lot lost in translation in this article, either that or Rafa's lost the plot!

I can't really agree with Benitez as when he got his new contract, he had complete control over all the issues he is mentioning!

'White liquid in a bottle has to be milk'."

Not necessarily...

Benitez should let this go. He's in a better position, we're not. Talk about Inter.

Before everybody goes nuclear on Rafa. He refused to comment three times. The journos constantly poked him and he broke down the fourth time he was poked. Interesting quote there though

"At the beginning, they changed the managing director who was talking with some players, and they changed everything that we were doing in the past."

I'm not having a go at him, he should just let this go. He's the manager of Inter now, there shouldn't be anymore comments about Liverpool. I'm glad he still cares about the club but he should be professional.

Agree with this.

I'd also like it if he didnt keep blaming everybody else for everything.

It wasnt all his fault, but some of it was.

Is he trying to say "It's obvious" or something to that effect?

I have read that Milk part again and again. It does not make any sense whatsoever.

The main question I would ask is, who was responsible for the signing of Aquilani?

Rafa has to take the blame there, and that was the catalyst for our downfall.

I'm guessing something has been lost in translation there because the whole milk thing makes him sound like a gibbering lunatic.

Yep he should let it go.

But although the RAWK conspiracy theories are mad, there obviously were problems between Purslow and Benitez.

Most people seem to tacitly support a "Liverpool Way" which harks back to the halcyon days of Robinson (to the point of feeling embarrassed about wanting Hodgson out this early - even given his results).

I think the type of undermining that Purslow seems to be accused of is not "The Liverpool Way" - but maybe it's just sour grapes from Benitez - who knows?

I guess that milk expression makes sense in Spanish, because in English it sounds like Seagulls and Trawlers.
I suppose it means appearances can be deceptive, or something like that...

So everything changed the day they got rid of Rick Parry, who Benitez also apparently hated. I see.

Benitez should shut the fcuk up and concentrate on his job with Inter, the mans fallen out with nearly every person he's worked with be it at Valencia or Liverpool and its only a mater of time before it happens at Inter who won't be as patient as the Liverpool board he has to take some responsibility for his failings.

Yeah but managers get asked questions at press conferences.
And to be fair results after he left have been worse at both Valencia and Liverpool.

Haha. Blaming Purslow it seems for sacking him. Never mind how poor we were last season and his shite transfers.

He's basically trying to say in a roundabout way "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably IS a member of SQUAWK duck "

He wasn't sacked, it was by mutual consent.
[/quote]

Ha, are you serious?

Hey, I personally don't believe it. But it's what Purslow is quoted as saying, no?

"The Board didn't sack Rafa. Rafa's exit was about as clear cut a case of mutual consent as I have ever been involved in my life. Both sides thought it was time for a change, both sides said so at the time, if you go back and check, and I wish him all the very best in his future career. He is a key part of our history and we wish him all the best."

Don't shoot the messenger 😉

Cut him some slack. He has been blamed for all the ills affecting British society in the last few months and he just hit back. It does appear as bitter.

Could just as easily be semen or white paint or Tipp-Ex...

Also, is Rafa trying to shrug off reponsibility for signing the likes of Dossena, Jovanovic and Aquilani? I'm pretty sure those weren't Purslow's decisions.

No that was all Parry*'s fault remember.

*The Ghost of Parry.

He says that it was everybody else's fault we're shit.

If it were his fault, then as soon as he left we'd be in better shape.

Since we're still shit (or wose shit) that means he was right and it wasnt his fault we're shit.

I call it The RAWK Theorem.
