Midweek Games - Matchday 24

OK, you watch the games, I'll do the stats. A dream team of critical analysis.

No, you do goals scored - which are fantastic but even Pep was unhappy with the Huddersfield game ... because they weren't good. How many games this year have we said, "If we had played a more clinical team, we'd have been punished?" Heck, Brighton (A) etc ... That's all I'm saying ... They're not playing that well ... That they're churning out wins & Great cup scorelines doesn't change that. It just highlights what a great team they are, which I said too!

I see both points of view.

They've eased to victories, but I've seen them struggle to motivate themselves out of 2nd gear in winning games.

I think having so many non-competitive games recently has been the reason for this. They go through the motions in games, and usually teams are beaten before kick off. City only have to play in 2nd gear to win most games. However, when a team does not totally shit their pants against them once they concede the first and the "defend at all costs" gameplan seemingly goes out of the window, City seem to struggle to find the motivation/urgency to put them out of their misery if their 2nd goal doesn't come soon after their 1st. Instead, doubt starts to creep in and they start passing the ball around without much purpose to attack/score. And they are waiting for the opposition to make another mistake, instead of forcing them into one. Who knows, maybe they are trying to conserve energy, being in 4 competitions, but such strategy comes at a risk.

With such a patient approach, you can be caught out in one moment of a loss of concentration. That's been the case against Newcastle, Palace and Leicester. And when they've fallen behind late, their reaction has been one of panic, and they've conceded another, which has been the most surprising thing.

Even against Huddersfield, I see where LTW is coming from. It was a comfortable 3-0 scoreline on paper. And all the stats will say so. And even watching it, City barely broke a sweat. But if you analyse it deeper, Pep was unhappy with the display, because their passing and combination play was VERY SLOW and laboured, and he knew that against a better side (with half an iota of counter attacking ambition), they would get caught out, if their performances didn't improve. Against Huddersfield, they won that game easily because Huddersfield made too many mistakes. Newcastle, however, made very few (City had 2 clear chances in each half). Without many massive mistakes, the onus was on City to show urgency and create chances. They struggled to motivate themselves out of 2nd gear to do so, having not been in 3rd or 4th gear since beating us.

Yeah, but their response to that has been pretty impressive, which was my point.

I'm loathe to see too many weaknesses in a team that's the only one to have beaten us, scored the most goals in the league, and also has the best goal difference.
Their weakness seems to be the occassional game where they lack focus/concentration/effort, call it what you will. It may be as someone else said earlier, they become over-confident and take the win as a given rather than working their balls off for it. They weren't particularly awesome last night despite their possession stats, that said Newcastle seemed to fumble and fuck up every opportunity to attack ... and then pulled a couple out of thin air.

When one of the top teams lose to a non-Top 6 team there's an element of luck too because the Top 6 almost always dominate those below.

United have won 8 on the bounce since we beat them, and then drew last night with 24 odd goals scored. Are they not vulnerable?
City stats there include 2 games v Burton Albion and another v Rotherham and 17 goals of that 30. If ever there was a stat that needed challenging it's that.

Of their last 7 games in the Prem league they have lost 3 of them, there are some issues even if they did manage to beat the best team in the world.

Did anyone watch MOD last night? I was just wondering if there was an in depth discussion on Lingard's dive on Tuesday night.
