Midfield Options

So right now our midfield options include: Milner, Henderson, Lucas, Allen, Can and possibly Coutinho, Lallana, or Firmino in at CAM.

We've been linked with more midfielders but I just feel like you can't do that and keep Lucas and Allen - you have to sell one. I think Allen is great at coming on towards the end of the game, keeping possession and controlling the game. Overall though, I would probably sell Allen and buy a new dynamic DM to compete with Can for the role.

I think having Can, Lucas, or a new DM sitting in front of the defense with Henderson and Milner as the main midfield pair would be very effective. Also in easier games where teams are sitting back, you could even play Milner and Henderson in the midfield with Coutinho in the CAM role. Just curious what your thoughts were. I think overall, we will have a much stronger midfield compared to last year.

I would be surprised to see Can or Allen start ahead of Lucas now but I expect Can will have supplanted Lucas by the end of the season. This is assuming we do not buy another CM ..... which I think we will. Kovacic is a name that doesn't go away and Illaramendi is currently linked too. I'd prefer to see :

Illaramendi isn't a DM per se but a distributer, or fulcrum if you prefer, who likes to stay involved, so fits with BRs stated 'not playing with a designated DM' policy.

At the moment, as things stand, Lucas has to start in the starting 11. Unfortunately. Allen is shit there, Milner isn't going to play there, henderson can't do it, and at the moment it looks like Can isn't quite ready. We're well stocked for all the other roles in midfield.
Could really do with a dedicated DM, more than we currently need a striker imo. We've currently got sturridge, ings, firmino, origi, lambert, borini, balotelli that can all play up top, for dm we've got Lucas, and that is it. Granted in an ideal world we could do with a new dm and a new striker, but for me, we've got depth up front but fuck all for dm.

I was under the impression Lucas wanted out.

Also, despite being a fan of Allen, I'm sceptical about his ability to play as the deepest midfielder, but then I guess a lot depends on how well the midfield ahead of him press and win back the ball. We were useless at that last season which is why whoever was playing at DM/Holding Midfielder would have been on a hiding to nothing then.

I think if we were going to play with a specialist DM in the majority of games we would be buying one. We're not so we haven't. When we need one in the big aways Lucas will play.

Ha. I hate arsenal too. They sum up everything wrong with modern footy more than any other club, & with city & Chelsea to compete with, that's some achievement. Plus every arsenal fan I've ever met has been a cunt.

I suspect Milner will be our "DM" and I think he could perform the role well - smart enough, physical enough and athletic enough. Henderson, Can or Allen playing ahead of him and able to rotate and cover when necessary.

Lucas should be sold as this is the last opportunity to get value from him and a younger CM brought is for cover. I think is the idea for Sissoko.
