Michael Owen

When I see videos of the old Owen, our Owen, all the fond memories and adulation come rushing back. The Kop might not have taken to him in the same way they did with the likes of Fowler, but I was immensely proud to have him in our team back then. He was a shining light for us during some dark times and as has been said, played a big part in winning us trophies to keep us going whilst the one we really wanted continued to be out of reach.

I was hurt and very disappointed by his exit, but most of all the manner in which it was conducted. Remember watching that CL qualifier with Owen sat on the bench? That fucking sucked... knowing that one of the worlds best is about to leave (and for a pittance).

I've had a lot of amusement out of how things have turned out, but watching him these days enough is enough. The guy has suffered enough and I was saying to some guys the other day that I'd like to see him doing well again. It's been a few years - let's put the bitterness aside and recognize him for what he was - one of Liverpool's finest.

Lastly, someone in this thread said that Owen was one of the primary factors in us playing hoofball. That was such a shit post, it actually made me angry.

good post.

It was possibly the same clattering uberspaz who reckoned that it was Owen's fault Heskey had such a miserable goalscoring record (his first, full season aside)

Disregarding the fact that his average, with or without Owen, is about 7 goals a season

What songs did Owen have? I can't remember any.

"Where were you in Istanbul?"

Hahahaha!

I didn't sing that one, but I was at Anfield when it was debuted

Crouch scored one of ours, not sure about the other

Haha

Haha, I've just read spiderdiv's reasoning about how we should have sold one of our best players in order to ensure we improved

Hahaha

The "We still finished 5th even with Owen" one? Yeah and we'd have finished about 10th some seasons if we didn't have him.

That "no player should have less than two years on his contract" nonsense does my head in. You can't force people to sign contracts and there are quite a few players who should never be offered a contract again.

e.g. this time next year Degen will have just two years left on his contract. There's not a hope in hell we'll offer him another one.

I agree, watching of the clips show with the young Owen (at about 21 in 2001) scoring for fun seem so long ago. I DO think at times 'serves you so' but I do feel sorry too - what a fucking waste. Admittely the perpetual injuries have fucked his number one weapon, but he was a class player.

Watching these clips I do want him back, in much the same vein as Robbie a few years ago...but would it just be sentimental? Would it just be for one last hurrah, or could the dynamic all action game of Stevie (who he left at 23 and I wonder what his progression would have done to Mikey's game?), the passing of Xabi and the movement of Torres have woken him from this four year slumber?

Unfortunately all a mute point, as I think his heart has all but packing in the game, along wth his pace. As Tinto says...

Henry was the better all round forward with more to his game but Owen was the better goal scorer especially in the penalty area... if there was a loose ball in the area Owen would pounce on those half chances in a way that Henry never really seem to have an instinct for.

...It's all past tense.

Can you imagine what GH's reaction would have been if he arrived in after a summer break to find Parry had sold Owen because he had less than two years on his contract left ?

Ross, the point about not letting contracts run down does not apply to Degen, because who cares when shit players who won't command a decent fee go out of contract?

It's your top-class players that you want to tie into long-term contracts

Not sure if you're playing Cretin's Advocate again

Spidey repeats the mantra evey time a contract is up, I'm just pointing out it's fucking silly

I seem to recall one about the cup final.

1 nil down
2-1 up
Michael Owen won the cup
With a nick nack paddy whack,
Give the dog a bone
Poor old Arsenal fucked off home/ won fuck all

Oh, right.

It is spiderneil, though, allowances should be made for the occasional outburst of illogical, ill-considered drivel

what annoyed me more about owen was the fact that he bottled it last minute when newcastle came calling and he knew we were interested - Carra's autobiography implies as much. He should have held out and called madrid's bluff who needed him off the books - the fact that he couldn't hold out that much for the us saddens me. Having said that I would take back in a heartbeat if he was a freebie with reasonable wages.

From what I've heard Benitez didn't want him then and has had the opportunity to take him back since but turned the offer down.

based on carra's autobiography only, it seems that benitez was interested in Owen - in carra;s words 'to get his no.10 shirt back michael was going to have to call madrid's bluff.....he was unable to take the risk' carra says he tried desparately to change Owen's mind too.

Instead he 'risked'' Newcastle....the rest is history

Oh yeah.

Would he come back as a squad player on half his current wages? Of course he wouldn't.

Will he sign mid table prem, maybe. Or even citeh, where they can carry on paying stupid wages and swapping him with craig bellamugly.

Funniest ending would be to move to ewe es ay.
