We have to sign him come January, for the reported knock down price....

The lad despite having glass legs shits goals.. and at present we need that..

All this talkin the press about Heskey.. Yes he can hold up the ball well and bring other into playe.. But isn't that what we spent 20 million on Keane for ? We need some one who can score goals in the box..

To be fair we need back up for Torres an our current crop of stirkers just dont do it.. and well never will.. promising youngsters Nemeth and n'gog need time...

Owen will be great cover for Torres and a top option from the bench... With owen playing you will see a lot more of keane..

Keane-Owen/Torres...

Kuyt.. is goin to be ever used on the right wing.. more so with pennant going.. Babel.. well he should be playing on the right wing.. But Rafa.. loves Kuyt too much..

Fcuk the St Michael traitor nonsense... How was he going to know we where going to win the champions league the season he left.. I cant blame him for leaving.. the guy was one of the best strikers in Europe.. and craved success.. We where utter garbage at the time... Unfortunately it has not gone as well as expected for him.. BUY BUY BUY End Of!

Owen is a mercenary pure and simple. Not the sort of player I could really cheer for again. But if it meant us challenging for the title, i'd have him back, no question.

I wouldn't go as far as callin him a mercenary... I could easily cheer for him again if he scored the goals that meant we could win the title... The lad was brilliant in his day.. and even now i'd say he is top class. He gets goals.. He would score plenty more with the talent that would be surrounding him at Liverpool.. I'd say his worse days of injury are over.. Its worth the gamble...

No seriously, he is. I mean, i've got no love for Newcastle, but the way he's conducted himself there is a disgrace. Every 2 minutes there's talk about him leaving or clauses in his contract for him to leave, or new contract extensions for him. It's destabilising. When you consider the amount of money they forked out for him, the amount of wages he's collected and the amount of games he's actually played, an honest man would feel a bit of guilt or loyalty to stay and repay their faith, for at least for another 2-3years. But Owen doesn't care for loyalty (we at Liverpool already know this at great cost), for Owen, it's all about who can pay him the most money and put him in a position to play for England. It's that simple for him. He IS a mercenary, which is a shame, as I used to idolise him when I was younger.

if he comes and wins us the league its the best signing ever

if he comes and fudges his hamstring after 4 days and barely kicks a ball for us its a terrible signing

Its a tough call for Rafa and i dunno if owen is willing to be second or third or fourth choice striker and his wages may also take the piss..... but the wee shite is a brilliant poacher

I remember i couldnt watch his press conferences for madrid when he signed i was so annoyed with him >🙁

I disagree.. When he left for Real Madrid he took a pay cut... Granted when the offer was on the table from Liverpool for him to return the offer Liverpool gave him was not attractive enough... they wanted to take him on loan... or at a knock down price.... wages being less than what hes was currently getting at Madrid..

Madrid wanted to sell.. and only Newcastle UTD where stupid enough to pay the 17 million that was asked of him... and ridiculous wages... Liverpool basically said... sorry no match chaps... I mean your really not going to spend 17 million on a striker that you sold for 8 million the year before are you ? Owen was left to take Newcastle option... to continue with his England prospects.. The same reason why Crouch recently left Liverpool for Portsmouth..

The guy had a clause in his contract at Newcastle as you have rightly said.. which means he could of left at any time... He has stayed.. I think that shows some loyalty.... Point is now.. quite rightly the lad has ambition.. and Newcastle are never going to meet that expectation...

This mercenary nonsense that has been directed at Michael Owen is Bollox... If you believe everything the papers say then.. well I can see how you can come to that conclusion...

I guess you can dress it up whatever way you want. I don't hate Michael Owen, I just don't particularly like him. Newcastle have been somewhat of sinking ship, and Owen like the proverbial rat seems to be one of the first trying to jump off.

To-mate-o, To-mart-o. You call it ambition, I call it selfish greed. Doesn't take away from the fact that he's a good player mind.

I wouldnt call him a mercenary.

He left the club thinking we were going in the wrong direction and wanted trophies not money, scored bucket loads of madrid when playing, came back noone would fork out bar Newcastle and clearly your going to want a lot of wonga to play for those cunts week in,week out.

Nice post Jono - with you all the way on that one.

I think he is a coward. He could have given the new manager (Rafa) one season to see if he could take us forward, but he didn't, he took the easy option of going to Madrid where he was seemingly guaranteed trophies.

He could have rejected Newcastle in the hope it would force Real to accept the lower offer from Liverpool, but he didn't, he wasn't prepared to take the risk.

But I'd still take him over Heskey.

I think we've had our time to laugh and point at Michael Owen and call him a traitor etc. Whatever wrongs he's done, he's paid for and then some.

If we could bring him back, I would.

Some of the witch hunting re: Owen is really hysterical. What would any of you do, in your own job, if what you considered to be a better option came along ? Stay put ? Yeah right.

And what if you really wanted to go to one company but a rival, even if not as prestigious or emotionally alluring, offered you a package you really couldn't turn down ? Stay put again ? Yeah right.

It's the way he did it though, if you want to go then fine, but don't string the club along for months on end.

Actually I'm not sure how much of that was him and how much was Parry. We all know how Parry operates so that is a close call. In the end he knew GH was out and then waited to see who came in and if he could work for him. Again in our real lives, if our boss changes then we are all thinking about what is going to happen and whether it will be good / bad for us.

That statement sort of puts you in the same boat as the one you put Owen in!

I've agreed with everything SG67 has said here. I'd still have him back, for a knock down price and reasonable wages.

He fucked us over with the contract, which meant we only got 8 million for him when he was worth about 25 million to us.

He could have played hardball with Real and rejected Newcastle. I was utterly astonished when he joined them, I couldn't believe it. But he didn't want to risk it on the bench at Real at the expense of his precious England.

And possibly the flimsiest reason I've gone off him was the fact I thought he should have given Rafa a year to see how it would go.

I'd still have him back though, but the affection I used to have for him is long gone.

It's a shame to see so many ex-liverpool strikers that could easily still be playing in Red, performing so well in other Premiership teams.

Owen is one

I hate to say this, but I really despise the little cunt.

He's everything that is wrong with today's game.

He rarely showed love to Liverpool, always talking about his England place etc...

Seriously, thanks for the memories Michael, but you un-did all the love many had for you with your selfish, disgraceful actions. The way you screwed us as the clock struck 12, the way you played down your contract, promising the fans you were 'close' to signing....

Whilst only a thick cunt wouldn't take him back (given our current circumstances) I don't think I could ever bring myself to really 'cheer' for him ever again.

I'd love to have him back. He's not quite the player he was, but he's still an excellent player and a million times better than David N'Gog. Who is shit.

So in order to get our revenge we´ll not buy him, & in the process deprive ourselves of a great striker that gets goals in the second half of the most likely season for us to win the title.

If only there were a phrase about such an act. About cutting off your nose, or something.

I think it could be great signing if it will happen. I was having a conversation with a friend who is friends with a liverpool player. He told me about owen refusing to extend his contract with newcastle prior to kinnear saying he wasn't. Apparently Owen will never happen Rafa has never forgiven him for him not holding out with Madrid and deciding to go to newcastle. We all know how stubborn senor benitez can be.

If you read my first post you'd see that I would have him for that very reason. That doesn't mean I have to like him though.

If we could get him for a nominal fee and then put him on relatively low wages, (65k per week?) or better yet 100k in a pay as you play basis, then his record says he is worth getting.

I don't believe any of that is possible. Ashley will want - need - to cash in on him and he won't accept relatively low wages or pay-as-you-go in a month of Sundays.
