Meanwhile Man Utd....

What has happened to us will happen to Man U. Slowly, their ability to buy top class players will subside and obviously the likes of Scholes and Giggs are close to retirement. Their team will become weaker and results will as well. They're fairly well protected from it currently due to the good squad they have but when it starts happening, and the signs are there, the problems we're having will pail into comparison. Simply being a huge club will not protect them - the debt is unsustainable without continued success and, without player investment, that's unsustainable itself.

I suspect it will be much harder to sell manu at 700m (and that's just the debt) than liverpool at 300m and that's if the glazers even want to sell. to be fair to the glazers, they've allowed manu to sign marquee players every season for years, manu also have one of the (if not THE) highest wage bill in the league.

Okay, what marquee players did they sign last year? Last 'marquee' player (I fucking hate that word) was probably Berbatov. Two years ago

how much did valencia cost? okay, not a 'marquee' player, but he wasn't cheap.

Valencia, Nani and Andersson are all in the 17 mill pound bracket. This Serbian wizard cost them 12 million (Zosic?). They even spent 6 mill pound on Diouf, 7 mill on bebe and similar on Hernandez lately. Not marquee, but players arent moving as fast today as earlier.

None of those can be considered a marquee player. Man U have not signed one in the last two years.

Disclaimer I am not writing ManU off.

The signs however are there, the selling of Ronaldo for 70 odd million and not really buying big to replace him was a big sign. The debts at the club are huge, and the worst thing (for them) is it has been reported a number of times that the Glazers are taking money from the club to sort out their other businesses that are not doing so well. They have players coming to the end of their professional careers and have very few who look to take their places as among the best in the world.

Having said all that, when the Glazers decide to sell I think they will be sold quickly and with little problems. There may be a debt but unlike LFC they have a world class stadium already and are making shed loads of money from sponsors etc. They still have enough money that they can buy an unheard of guy from the Portugese second division for 7 million.

Which is about how often they buy one, I don't think they buy one every season.

If 17 mill pounds is not a marquee, then we have none ourselves...

Personally i'd classify £7m on someone who was playing at the Homeless world cup 4 months ago as a marquee signing 😉

Scum have spent a pittance in the last few years. They banked 80m from Ronald and spent hardly any of it.

So they buy a marquee player every 3 years you say Asim ? Because that's the earliest they'll buy another one. They've never replaced Ronaldo with a marquee level and thats not a good sign

If Carlos Queiroz has said so, so he is!!

I don't see how they can afford to spend £30 odd million on a player the way their current finances are shaping up and they also have reported interest payments of 40 odd million a year, with massive debt loaded onto the club.

They didn't buy Tevez cos they couldn't afford him and not becasue he wasn't good enough or whatever reason they gave in the end. Tevez was desperate to stay and play for them, and would have flourished in the team (as he is now at City) without Ronaldo.

They will need to replace players like Rio, Scholes, Giggs, Van Der Sar etc, with uncertainty surrounding Vidic its not a good sign. Buying players like Smallings, Valencia to replace world class players is not going to cut it.

On new transfers? or servicing a debt or lining the pockets of the owners

Yes, perhaps.

Exactly

I think what says it all is that they sold Ronaldo for 80M, and still made a loss. Even with increased sales, commercial value overseas and other positive factors. They are heading for a volatile situation unless they sort this out quickly (he says as he slowly walks out of current glass house)

United haven't signed a 'marque' player if that is the correct term since Berbatov.

Yes they signed a few players for 17 million, (Anderson, Nani, Valencia) but i'll take that any day over them having the ability to splash the Ronaldo cash. We could have been looking at player's of Villa's ilk, or even a Kun Aquero.

Hopefully, Scholes, Giggs and VDS will pop their clogs soon and see their squad deplete a bit.
