Maxi comment..

From an interview on the Offal about us turning a corner, etc. Anyway, I thought this comment was interesting regards whatever it is we're trying to do:

"All managers have their own style, and the new manager who arrived in the summer has a different one to the manager who left," he said. "They are not particularly similar in the way they do things or what they want us to do.

"So we have all had to adapt to the style of today's Liverpool manager. The important thing is we have the players to do that, to let the team play higher up the pitch.

Is he suggesting that Rafas style was a more cautious counter attacking one one then Roys Barcelona-esque high tempo pressing game further up the pitch?

That's the way it reads to me - in which case Roy's clearly having difficulty getting the players to understand and/or follow his instructions, which kinda underlines the majority opinion about him on here.

The part that makes it insane is that under Rafa we usually pressed higher up with Gerrard Torres and Kuyt closing down defenders and forcing them to make mistake

Exactly, so if Roy really is trying to get us to press even higher up the pitch (a) he's obviously failing and (b) WTF is he trying to achieve?

Alternatively, what kind of sh!te is Maxi talking here? Could it be some kind of subtle signal that the players think Roy's a gibbering fool? Statements of support for him from the players have certainly been conspicuous by their absence.

It could mean anything especially as I don't know how good Maxi's English is or whether the quote has been translated back from Spanish to English etc etc.

'Playing' further up the pitch doesn't always mean pressing higher. If he means with the ball, it may mean that Roy doesn't want us playing around with the ball in defence or midfield but to get the ball forwards quickly and play up there.

Which is worrying.

I love the way most here think a new managers style and tactics are supposed to click into place as soon as the season starts.....

If I remember rightly Rafa's 1st season we only started looking slightly cohesive after Xmas.....

Lets give Roy a little more time huh, yes by the end if the season we might say he is not good enough, but to be fair he has a lot of dross to work with who basically had been playing anti football for the last year and a half at least.....

I've been encouraged actually by the way it seems Roy is trying to get the team to get it on the deck and pass it, maybe we dont have the players to do that, or maybe they have forgotten..... But only through training day in day out in training and during games will this improve.....

I for one actually have a seed of optimism from some of our play recently.

A few of Rafa's starts to the season were on a par with this one aswell.

There's really nothing new to say about Roy and his tactics, however we have 3 wins on the bouce and that is cause for optimism.

We know that he is not getting the sack just yet so let's support Liverpool even if we don't like Roy at the helm. This divisive rhetoric is tiresome.

"I love the way" some here think they know what "most here think".

You're not the only one who knows a new manager will take time to settle in. While he's doing it, though, there's no excuse for taking a squad which finished 7th last season, dross or no dross, down to just above the relegation zone. We played predominantly on the deck under the previous manager too so, if the players HAVE forgotten how to do it this season until recently, whose fault is that? It's true that some of our play in the last couple of games or so has been better, but there's a sod of a long way still to go before this squad - thin as it may be - reaches even last season's levels.

Aside from the Blackburn game though, we've basically lost three VERY losable games in Everton, United and City, all away too.

Mark, they're all loseable in the Prem, but this is not a relegation squad and yet Roy has had it playing like one, until now at least.

Posters over-scrutinising quotes to draw the conclusions they wish; that is Roy losing the plot.

Wow, what a surprise.

We're still not where we were last season, let along proving we can stay there. If and when we manage it, I'll happily acknowledge that.

"The players think Roy is a gibbering old fool" because Maxi said "we have the players to play higher up the pitch".

There's nothing I can say about that.

Mark defending Budgie. Wow, what a surprise.
[/quote]

I don't think I'm overly defensive of him, but he needs some time and a bit of perspective, it wasn't the easiest of starts to the season in terms of fixtures.

Squiggles, if you read posts instead of posturing about them you might come across as a lot less of an arsehole. It was speculation, expressed as such, because on the face of it Maxi's statement was totally removed from what we'd seen so far this season.

You've tried to pass off blind speculation as total fact in the past.

I'm just pleased you know where this is on the spectrum.

he he dont worry I know what you mean but you have to say that at times we have passed the ball well recently?

As they say though "the judge wont budge"

Well, I've said in numerous threads (as most of us have) that we're playing better in these last few games, and today was excellent, but our start was so dire - far more than it should have been, even with the players we already have - that some of us think Roy and the team both have some way to go yet. I honestly don't think that's unreasonable.

Anyway, peace.
