Pogba, Mata, Mkhitarian have proven pedigree. Rashford and Martial a lot of promise.

In Valencia, Herrera, Bailly et al there is the makings of a good supporting cast.

Ibra will go at the end of the season, probably along with Rooney.

A new attacker along with a Vidal / Keane type in midfield and another CB will see them much improved.

Of course this is all assuming Mourinho gets his shit together, which doesn't seem to be a forgone conclusion any more.

So no "top" players then?

They've been trying to put together a team since Fergie retired. Its not going very well.
Their best player for 3 seasons running have been De Gea.

That last bit is key IMO. Could it simply be that, as all players do eventually, managers also can reach their sell-by date and Mourinho's done so?

How is Pogba not a top player?

De Gea is one of the best keepers in the world.

Mhkitaryan is class, as is Martial.

Mata and Herrera are both really decent attacking mids.

It's not a perfect squad but then neither is ours. But in terms of individual quality in their best XI, I'd say they're a match for us.

I said when they got Maureen, in response to folks who said things like "he shits league trophies" (*), that while the potential downside was he may drag them to a title, it was far outweighed by the potential upside of both Utd & Maureen crashing & burning together.

Glad to see the upside is winning out at the moment

(*) I believe I may be in the same city as the gentleman who says that, at the moment.

de gea , Rooney, pogba , myhkiwhatever,Mata, bailley that's half a side that's more than good enough to challenge .

then you've got herrera , schneiderlin, luke Shaw , Smalling, martial, rashford,Zlatan.
its a decent squad.
too good to bot be challenging for silverware ans championships

It's amazing that he avoids playing with pace in a league that pretty much demands it. He had issues with Hazard, he didn't like Mata etc and how he's trying to shoe Rooney and Ibra into an attack, that can be easily nullified by defending high. Fucking genius.

Mata is slow as fuck

Can you name their "top" players?

Behave yourself...they've got a squad more than capable of doing a lot better than they're currently doing. Mourinho himself said in the wake of signing them 4 players in the summer that he'd expect a Title challenge and it was only a few months ago the vast majority of people were talking of a 2 horse race for the Title with the 2 Manchester Clubs.

It's up to him to get the best of the most expensive squad ever assembled in football. To get the best out of £90m man Paul Pogba etc.

Seeing as it is the most expencive squad ever, there should definetly be some good players in there.
There are also loads of very average players there.

Weird that he doesnt rate Schneiderlin. Utd would be much more dangerous with a bit more pace upfront.
Lets hope Mourinho continue like he does now.

Jose Mourinho has now lost 21 of his last 42 games as a manager...

What has our squad got to do with this discussion? I'm only taking about United here.

Pogba has performed well in the past but I'm not sold on his performances at CM. Neither is his gaffer or would seem ad he's been played as a support striker in the last few games. Like Souness & Carrahger have both said, his athleticism gets him out of a jam. He's a top class athlete for sure but not a top class CM. He's young enough to develop though and I'm pretty sure he will adapt to the premier league.

Mata & Herrara are in and out of the team for Rooney & Fellaini on occasion. I know Mourhino is scratching around for a starting XI and/or formation but have been dropped.

The Mkhitayran thing is crazy. He was quality for Dortmund alright.

De Gea is their only world class player who would be coveted by Real or Barca.

[article]“Smalling doesn’t feel that he can play 100 per cent with his pain. Luke Shaw told me this morning that he was not in the condition to play so we had to build a defensive line.[/article]

That's Mourinho today in the post-game ... talk about calling your players out ...

Depends what you mean by writing them off. If it's in the context of finishing above Liverpool, they did last season and the season before that.

Well, I think it's dangerous to write any Mourinho team off.
Of course it is. However, the poor results to date, the lack of cohesion and the surprising public criticism of two 'key' defensive players is very pleasing to my ears.

I spent years trying to avoid a decision maker role in my own line of work only to find that ultimately if you want things to be done your way you need to take both the authority and the responsibility. Mourinho seems to be struggling with these two opposing dynamics currently.

Of course it is. They'll spend again in Jan and regardless how much he's disliked, Mourinho has shown time and again in different leagues that's he's a top manager.
