Mascherano, who also revealed the switch to Barcelona was a year overdue, was labelled "selfish" by Hodgson when he supposedly refused to play for the Reds against Manchester City last week.

"Roy Hodgson knows the truth," he said in the Guardian. "This is a happy moment for me so now is not the time to say it, but a lot of lies have been told about me and I will respond to them.

"Last year Liverpool would not let me leave. There was no way they would sell me. They had Xabi Alonso and me, and they would only let Xabi leave."

He added in The Lying Rag: "Against Manchester City, I was not right to play. Liverpool will always be in my heart but my time there has finished."

The Argentina midfielder dismissed reports that former manager Rafa Benitez had tried to sign him for his new club Inter, confirming Barcelona was the only club who made a bid for his services.

"I was disappointed not to be able to sign last season. When the best club in the world calls you, then it is something that you want to happen. I have signed for the only club who really wanted me. In no moment did I ever think that Inter was a possibility. Rafa valued me and perhaps that is why people started saying that I could go there but this is the only club that pushed to sign me.

"When I landed I said that I was achieving a dream. At last I will be able to say that I play for Barcelona, the team who I wanted to play for."

What do you think are the 'lies'?

Well, I'm hoping he didn't actually give The Lying Rag an interview, or my opinion of him will well and truly turn.

Mascher was a bit like C.Ronaldo. The sort of player that you'd love dearly in your side, but think was an absolute whopping cunt if he wasn't.

.. He's no longer in our side.

What's the lie?

That he refused to play for Liverpool against Citeh?

Seems like he's just said it.

So as always, he can fcuk himself.

Sorry, was meant tio read 'wasnt', not 'was'.

This is a happy moment for me so now is not the time to say it, but a lot of lies have been told about me and I will respond to them.

I suggest he writes a book and release it together with Patrice Evras book about the real truth behind what happend in South Africa. Will be two bestsellers for the christmas.....

Who has lied? Both him and Hodgson have said he wanted to go last year, they have both said he wasn't 'right' to play last week and the club have been fair by letting him go now. we didn't HAVE to.

He is the one who is moaning. Still.

He never gave less than 100% in a red shirt. I will always like him as a player and an individual. Good luck Javier! 🙂

Yes great player and person.
I hope the best for him. Always gave his all for us.

I'm with Portly with regards to him always giving 100% for us. He's a fantastic player and a great warrior.
However, as Sunny says - that final refusal to play has tainted an otherwise great contribution for us.

And btw, I can't see him becoming a bench warmer for Barca. They have a lot of games to play this season, and with most of their squad made of internationals that's even more load on the players. So they certainly need a large squad.
I have to admit though that my sympathy for them has diminished with the way they've been acting recently re Mascherano and Fabregas. They're bound to pay for this behaviour.

We don't know exactly what happened. I'm not going to allow a bit of a scuffle over Mascherano's departure to cloud my happy memories of the great games he played for us.

He didn't "refuse to play". The "Echo" said it was Roy who took the decision not to include him, and that's what I suspect he's getting at. I happen to agree that he'd have been best advised to let this ride now, but so would we, and too many of the comments in this thread are deplorable. The guy wouldn't be bothering to raise this if he didn't care about his reputation among the fans, and he wouldn't care about THAT if he was just the kind of cnut he's been labelled by too many on here.

I find it hard to have any real firm opinion about this. It seems that we are to recoup what we paid for him and the Manager has brought in his choice of replacement. He's another footballer who has gone to the grass he believes is greener on the other side. Same as it ever was.

As for his newspaper quotes they are simply the musings of an individual who feels uncomfortable as he knows he has not conducted affairs reasonably.

Time to move on.

I think Mascherano could have been a lot more unreasonable than he was. He could have kicked up a fuss when he asked to leave 12 months ago, but he didn't and instead gave us a full season of the usual deeply-committed football.

It may be Roys choice not to play him, but there must have been something that happened during the day between roy and masch for roy to take that step. Roy was aware he wanted to go before the arsenal game too

Twelve months ago Portly, he had three years on his contract. Why should we have let him go? Im not into all this name calling, but I have no sympathy for him.

You're right that we should move on, even though for once I think you're wrong about this.

Obviously he cares about his reputation, as does every other player who felt that they'd been 'wronged' over things they had done. As for the Echo, I have no doubt that Roy took the decision not to include him..the Echo doesnt however say why, though I think we can probably guess.

I'm sure right now Zidane is telling someone about the nasty things Materazzi said about his sister.

His conduct has hurt us, and will continue to hurt us throughout the season..I don't know why you want to dress it up differently, no matter how much you like him Jules.

When did the details of his contract ever stop a footballer leaving a club? I thought it was quite unusual when Mascherano accepted it, when he was told he couldn't leave.

The funny thing is that he seemed eager to sign a new contract last winter....

He also agreed with the club that he'd leave when the right offer came in.

Seems 'right' is relative tough.
