Mascherano to sign a new contract this week?

Javier was always much more likely to stay - hopefully he'll accept it ASAP and bring some much need stability (in more ways than one) to our club.

Whatever he's being paid now, he deserves to be in the same bracket of wages as our other "untouchables".

At least, yes. I'd rather keep Xabi though.

Me too DWM, me too.

Not sure rather keep someone who wants to stay, if Masher is on 30,000 a week then maybe he should be on similar levels to others.
Xabi had a great last season, but maybe I just don't really rate him high as most others do on this forum. Just think he will be easier to replace then Masher. Maybe will just miss the way Masher celebrates a goal 🙂

I'd rather keep Masher, he's consistently a world class DM. I'm sure we can get another CM/AM that offers more than Xabi.

I disagree Neets. Masher is a true specialist, the kind that is almost impossible to replace in his particular role. Whilst Xabi had an excellent season, no doubt, there are more players of his type out there, and some at sensible money. People seem to be raving about Aquilini (of whom I know nothing) as a possible replacement. Maybe you could grow to love him too?

Totally disagree. It's far easier to find a simple DM than to find a player Xabi's mould with his passing range.

Masher is more important to us.

I can't see how you get this SG. Care to eloborate this point?

Simple DM?
Many clubs have spent millions finding this 'simple DM', he is a true specialist at what he does and regardless whether he should play ever game, in the big games last season he was trully outstanding.
If we could have had him in the Chelsea 1st leg, I think still think it may have been a different result.
Xabi had a great last season but he's not at the best CM in the world, can be replaced and I'm sure Rafa can.

Fantastic news if true. To lose both of them would be a devastating blow as they're both amongst the best in their respective positions.

I'd rather keep Alonso. He controlls our midfield, dictates our tempo etc.

Why would people want to keep Masher ahead of Xabi? Xabi is nearly impossible to replace. He is his own breed of talent. Masher is an exceptional player for us but losing Alonso will be harder to stomach.

Agreed but I'll also rather keep Masher who wants to stay over Xabi who wants to go.

Mascherano is one of the best DM's in the world, I'm not disputing that. But there are far more DM's in the world than players like Alonso.

Surely anyone can see that.

Mascherano is top 3 in his position, if not the best.

The gap between Xabi and the best (Fabregas, Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard, Kaka etc) is rather large. I'd still rather have a happy Xabi with us, but he's not 'amongst the best'

I know what you're getting at Anita but I think replacing someone with Mascher's work rate, ability and tenacity would be much much harder than signing a replacement for Alonso.

I love them both though so wouldn't want the option of only having one of them. I hope we keep hold of both.

It's no secret that Masher isn't fully settled here, he might want to go to. Luckily, Yaya Toure singed a new contract which put the Barca links to bed really.

Absolute rubbish.

How can you even compare the likes of Iniesta and Kaka to Alonso?

Mascherano, you're my silver medal.

Bleh. Still, a top quality player, just not one that's going to help us crack shit teams, which is where we fell down.

Yup, spot on.

Amongst all your recent flapping and wailing, you've come ou with some decent points. The above statements being the highlight.

They simply re-quote the 'one-liner' from yesterday's Mail.

Liverpool are ready to offer Javier Mascherano, 25, a new contract this week in a bid to persuade him to stay.

He is unsettled as his wife does not want to return from Argentina and Barcelona have expressed strong interest. But Liverpool will look to nearly treble his pay to keep him.

Playmakers, who unlike Xabi, play up the pitch ...

You can argue all day about which player is more replaceable - and many do - but the bottom line is both are nigh on impossible to switch like for like; you won't find someone with Xabi's passing range, but equally you can find someone more mobile who's stronger in the tackle, etc. It's about getting the balance right.

Right now we have two highly specialised, world-class at their role CM's - but both have their limitations which can be addressed with their potential replacements.

(Xabi is more difficult to replace, though. It takes years of practice and an abundance of talent to pass a ball the way he does, and Anita's right: there are more DM's around, because that role is easier to master)

Right after you remove yours.

There are an abundance of playmakers - almost every team has one. Many of good quality. However nowhere near as many teams play with a DM and as Masher is amongst the very best - if not the best - then I would prefer to keep him and let Xabi go.

Playing Masher means we can release our FBs and the rest of our MF can go forward with relative impunity. The irony being a purely defensive player enables us to improve in both defense and attack.

To be fair, in terms of comparisons to Iniesta and Xavi, Gerrard is our playmaker, he plays the key role in the side that makes our attack tick.

Alonso has that ability to play the first time, clinically executed ball that keeps the momentum going in the middle third, but Gerrard is the main force of creativity in the attacking area of the pitch.

It's a shame Carrick plays for that shite, because he's the closest player I can think of to an Alonso.
