Napoli boss Rafael Benitez will ramp up his efforts to sign former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, according to reports.
Benitez brought the Argentinian to Anfield in 2007 during his spell in charge of Liverpool and he is now seeking a reunion in Naples.
Mascherano, 29, has enjoyed three hugely successful years at the Nou Camp but hinted back in August that he would consider his future after being sounded out over a move away from Catalonia.
Reports now suggest his time in Spain could be coming to an end and Benitez wants to take him to Italy.
Napoli have enjoyed a fine start to the season under Benitez and are looking to strengthen in January ahead of an assault on the Serie A title.
And Sky Sport Italia believe Napoli will make an official approach ahead of the transfer window opening.
Manchester City have also been linked with the former River Plate man in recent months and could rival Napoli for his signature.

Great signing for Napoli and probably a good move for Barca as it'll force them to go buy a proper CB.

Talksport know nothing. My favourite was when Everton threatened them with legal action over the Moyes to Spurs "story".

[article=http://www.football-italia.net/41104/de-la-gonalons-mascherano]Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted that Maxime Gonalons is a potential transfer target.

The Lyon midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Partenopei over the summer, but a move failed to materialised.

However, the club’s chief has revealed that the French youngster could arrive in January, whilst also ruling out a move for Javier Mascherano.

“Gonalons? His is a profile that may be of interest to us,” journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported him as saying.

“Mascherano? I can rule that. We’re not interested in him.”[/article]

Don't like the guy, but he did well for us, and he remembered us in his post Final interviews 2012 🙂

I didn't like the way Mascher left, but he was under intense family pressure to leave, so not liking the guy overall is a step I'm not willing to take. While he was with us he was THE best ball-winner I've seen in a Liverpool shirt in half a century, he gave 200% every time he played (up to and including his very last game for us before leaving, against the Arse when he was MOTM) and, as you rightly say, he dedicated that win to us last year. I'd take him back tomorrow.

I like the way each answer is prefaced with a question.

Whatever happened to his exit revelations he was all set to reveal when the time was right?

[article=http://as.com/diarioas/2013/11/01/english/1383339523_169008.html]Javier Mascherano feels that Leo Messi must not overexert himself during the current campaign so that he reaches next year’s World Cup finals injury-free. The Argentinean gave an interview to ‘El Gráfico’ this month in which he spoke about his compatriot, the rumoured interest from Napoli and life under coach Tata Martino.

Barça’s possession game: “We beat Rayo 4-0 but they saw more of the ball than we did, 51 per cent to our 49 per cent, I think. It’s an absurd debate really isn’t it? The team continues as it has but if you can reach the rival area in three passes, you’re not going to pass it about and make 20 passes just to please your opponent are you?

Tata Martino: “He’s a very serious-minded coach; he works hard and doesn’t ask you to do difficult things. At first, I was quite surprised when Barça brought him in – not because I thought he wasn’t up for the job but because it’s not very often you see a South American coach at one of the top European sides. When he joined us, the first thing he said was ‘I haven’t come here to change anything – only to recover a few things I have seen this side do which recently, they’ve stopped doing’”.

Messi: “He’s fully aware of what happened earlier this season in terms of fitness and injuries and he is trying to prevent any future problems so that he will be in top shape for the World Cup finals. His injury scares have helped him to look after himself better”.

Rafa Benítez: “Before I joined Barça, I was close to signing for Inter Milan. I regularly speak with Rafa but to ask me if I am considering joining Napoli? I’m perfectly happy here and Rafa knows that”.

2014 Brazil: “Spain and Brazil are the favourites”.

Guardiola: “He just put me directly in central defence (without discussion)”.

Mourinho: “The first two years with Mourinho were a drag”.[/article]
